I am 100% reader 0% writer. In many authors notes I have read comments like “the characters didn’t speak to me so I couldn’t get the next chapter out” Since I have never experienced this, when I read a book I can’t decide who is speaking the author or the character.
With paranormal fiction books the author sets the rules ..twilight vamps sparkle because they are made of stone… whether you like it or hate it , they sparkle period.
With all human books I often find myself getting defensive at character traits and feeling like the author is trying to push their beliefs on me.
Is Ben a Broncos fan or is the author a Broncos fan? If he is a fan, is it because he’s a rancher so he goes for the broncos wouldn’t the cowboys be a better fit? Did the author flip a coin and choose the team? did she poll wild west cowboys and take the winner? Did she have a rugged voice in her head saying “go Broncos”
When I read an all human book I find myself saying “thats the author trying to influence me” very often…maybe too often. How many words in a book are the authors and how many are the characters? Is there a difference?
Can an author write about a character that hates football even though they are huge fans? Would there even be a reason too? If you like football, will everyone of your characters like it??
I love chocolate. Why would I ever get a plot bunny for a character that hates chocolate since I love it.
Why am I ok with reading about vampire Merit’s love of deep dish pizza.. I think “well I bet Chicago does have great pizza” Then I go and have pizza for dinner but when a human character suggests sushi for a lunch date I think the author is trying to get everyone to love sushi like they do.
Merit speaks of her love of Mallo cakes and I google to see where I can buy some. Human Abbey says she loves twinkies and I picture the author eating a twinkie while typing at her laptop.
What I am looking for is some insight on how and why characters develop. In a romance book do we need to know what football team they like? It does give the characters life I get that; but can it be distracting? Why interrupt a high school lunch scene to have a world event discussion. If I am reading the book today and the event being discussed took place 10 years ago will that take away from the book.
Is it best to put all aside and just dive in and believe 100% the character speaks for themselves?
Am I the only one who accepts Paranormal as it is written (since I have no grounds for comparison) and question everything about human books?
