Anatomy of a Mary Sue

Friday December 9, 2011 at 3:16 PM

Okay, so I just read this tumblr post/essay and I really really really want to talk to someone about it, so... to fandom! Tell me what you guys think about this.

The author thinks that the very idea of the "mary sue" is dumb and rather sexist. It's a term I've thrown around so much without thinking about it, but now, you see, I'm thinking about it. Bella Swan is mentioned toward the end, if you need some incentive to read the whole thing.

Come tell me what you think!!

Some choice quotes:

" Wish fulfillment characters have been around since the beginning of time. The good guys tend to win, get the girl and have everything fall into place for them. It’s only when women started doing it that it became a problem."

"How many nerdy, schlubby guys suddenly become badasses and have hot girls chasing after them in fiction? See: Spiderman- blatant everyman who happens to stumble across amazing powers and catch the eye of a supermodel."

Well Hello again!

Friday December 9, 2011 at 1:18 PM

Holy cow I haven't been on here in ages! ADF got a facelift...very nice...anyways as it is FFAF I've decided to come out of hiding...

I have missed so much in the fandom it's not even funny...I recently reactivated my twitter account as well because I missed having y'all there to talk to.

Anyways to make this post interactive what are the last 5 books you read? And if you don't read books anymore because FF is running your life then put the last 5 stories you read instead...I need to get back in the swing of things

Some pretty for y'all

Oh and one more quick question for the rangers? Are you doing another free-cycle anytime soon...I've got some things I can pitch in finally!

Burning Questions!

Friday December 9, 2011 at 12:47 PM

I really miss Vampire Diaries. Even though I can't stand the sound of Elena's fake scream, I miss the show.

But I have to admit, it has left me with a number of burning questions, such as:

If Klaus had to kill the doppelganger (or serve up her blood, whichever) to break the curse, why would Katherine turning into a vampire stop him? These vampires still have blood, don't they?

Stefan and Damon live in the boarding house that has been owned for generations by their nephews and great-nephews. If there were only two Salvatore brothers and Stefan killed his father, how were there any Salvatore nephews?

I thought Stefan and Damon signed over their house to Elena so that no vampires could come in uninvited. So how did Rebecca just invite herself right in? Which reminds me...

The rules that apply to most vampires don't seem to apply to the Originals. Sometimes. Vervain used to work on them...does it not work on them anymore? Staking an Original only works when that oak tree is involved. But somehow second generation vampires can just be staked? And vervained? WHY MAKE RULES IF YOU AREN'T GOING TO ABIDE BY THEM?

Bonnie is a Bennett witch. Good. Her grandmother, too. Fine. And that chick who was her second cousin twice removed is a Bennett. Okay. But how are all these women Bennetts? Does no one ever take their father's or husband's last name in that family? (Actually, I like that idea.)

Why is it that every black person with spoken lines in this show is either a witch or a victim or both? Is it some kind of in-show racial profiling? Can't there be some black folks who are like Matt--not victimized, not witchified, just normal people who get to speak up when something's not right?

If you have answers, or questions of your own, or even some VD-related rants, come right in!

NOOK COLOR Vs. KINDLE FIRE

Friday December 9, 2011 at 12:39 PM

HI everyone!! My first campfire....wow.

I saw the CF not too long ago about this same topic. I went ahead and bought my 13yr old daughter a Kindle Fire for Christmas. We don't have any experience with e-readers AT ALL. My specific question now is a little different. I want to get one of the 2 e-readers for my husband, but he works overseas (actually out in the ocean) for half of the year. He's offshore out of Luanda, Angola, Africa for 30 days, then back here to Tennessee for 30 days, back and forth. Does anyone know which device would be more "usable" or "functional" out of the US? Just go ahead and assume that Angola doesn't have any kind of mobile network coverage or whatever, b/c they are never included, even with AT&T, etc.

Just looking for opinions or info, or even if you have one or both and have any tips, I would appreciate it!

Thanks!!

One story done, another in

Friday December 9, 2011 at 9:13 AM

Free for all you say? well I'll use it to pimp what I post here on ADF (But at the bottom I'll give you a rec).

First of all, I have posted the last chapter of Eros & Psyche. Here is the Saturnia's walterfall where the story ends.

Then I tell you that next week I'll start posting The Archer. 5 chapters in all, no vampires, but surely supernatural.

I have a blinkie for it, made by Raum, but I have to post it inside (No nudity, they say...) Enjoy

And now, the rec. It is an one shot by Anna Lund. Very funny, but also a punch in the gut. (and it could open a serious discussion)

My little sister http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7621190/1/

Summary: My brilliant little sister Bella. (Jasper POV). Vamp. Canon pairings.
Slightly OOC. Rated T. No mature content, except for regular vampire stuff.
Yeah, that means no lemons. Deal with it.

Yet another movie reaction CF

Friday December 9, 2011 at 7:44 AM

So I finally broke down and went to see Breaking Dawn last night. There were only 2 people in the theater including myself...and the other one was some random dude!

If you, like me, are late to the party as always, come in and talk about the movie. My remarks will be in the comments.

Natural Slash!

Friday December 9, 2011 at 5:53 AM

Ok, so I know that this campfire may not be completely legal in the realm of supernatural fanfiction, but I really dont know who else to ask! Everyone here is always so helpful with recs and there has to be ample amounts of you, on both sides of the pond, who can weigh in on this one!

I stumbled across an old episode of "Queer as Folk" the other day and I was completely sucked in! (pun completely intentional) OMG! Where the hell have I been?
What was I doing in the year 2000 that I never watched this show?! Oh... yeah, havin babies and such.

Well, now that my time is my own and my laundry pile needs a tv show playlist, I am asking my hubbie for the complete series box set for Christmas! Im so excited!

My Question is: American version or British version??  Is one better than the other? Are the cast of guys in one hotter than the other? I'm an American livin in the South yall, but I do love me some saucy Brit speak.

Give me your opinion!! THANKS!!

BLOGGERS AND JOURNALISTS

Thursday December 8, 2011 at 7:43 PM

Saw this article and thought it relavant since some people here blog. In ten words or less:

 http://blogs.seattleweekly.com/dailyweekly/2011/12/crystal_cox_oregon_blogger_isn.php

LOOKS LIKE BLOGGERS ARE NOT CONSIDERED JOURNALISTS, AND SOME ARE GETTING LAWSUITS AS A RESULT OF THEIR POSTS.

I am curious on your thoughts and how this effects blogging. I also wonder if this effects "Gossip Blogs". I think it is about time they are seperated from journalists. People are forgetting the Internet does not have a high validity or relabilty factor...anyone who can read can post. I am not sure but I am guessing the average readability (an equation you use to determine the reading level of a passage) is about seventh grade level (that is analyzing health related websites so it is probably lower on average daily sites). That means if you can read above a seventh grade level you can post and read on the Internet. That is great that it is accessible to so many but too many people BELIEVE EVERYTHING THEY READ! ESPCIALLY ON TWITTER TWATTER!

ANYWAY...WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS...I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR AND DEBATE...NICELY OF COURSE IT IS THE HOLIDAY SEASON!

I JUST WATCHED CHARLIE BROWN AND KEEP THINKING SCHROEDER IS THE EDWARD OF THE GROUP. LUCY IS ROSALIE TO A T AND SALLY'S HAIR SO SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALICE'S IN THE MOVIE....I AM THINKING MY LOVE OF THIS FANDOM IS GETTING INSANE!

Another 'Searching' Post

Thursday December 8, 2011 at 10:48 AM

I'm looking for a fic I read (I think) over the summer.

Bella and Edward were friends throughout high school, and planned to road trip to LA after graduation.  Edward's dad dies before they can and he tells Bella to go on her own while he stays home to take care of his mom and Alice.  Some-odd years later, Bella returns and is the star of a show somewhat like The O.C.

Ring any bells?

Hmm... for your time, here's a rec:

Neutral Buoyancy » by PiedPiperOSIB

In 1659, Marcus Volturi's wife was kidnapped. 350 years later, Edward Masen is hired to uncover what happened. Edward's quest uncovers more than he bargained for as love, family, history, and treachery collide during one unforgettable summer. AU-AH.
Twilight - Fiction Rated: M - English - Romance/Action/Adventure - Chapters: 11 - Words: 87,913 - Reviews: 235 - Updated: 11-6-11 - Published: 7-10-10 - - Edward/Bella

And for you hunger games fans out there, check out the Five Loaves of Bread Series by aimmyarrowshigh.  They're different AU oneshots (there's three so far) and utterly heart wrenching!

Is Tate the New Edward?

Thursday December 8, 2011 at 7:08 AM

I have been battling insomnia for a few weeks now. Last night, unfortunately, was a bad night as far as sleeplessness was concerned. Which is why I found myself, at 4 a.m., pondering perceived similarities between American Horror Story’s Tate and Twilight’s Edward. I came up with more of them than I was comfortable with.

Is it just a coincidence that, against all odds, many females are rooting for the Tate/Violet pairing? Is Ryan Murphy poking fun at the most popular male, literary character to come along in many, many years? Or is he just milking a proven formula for all it’s worth?

My observations are in the comments. It is quite possible that this whole comparison will make you think I’m totally smoking crack! I could be way off base. What is your opinion? Why do you think most of us here at ADF fell so hard for a vampire? And what makes so many females so sympathetic towards Tate, when everything we know about him so far indicates that we should hate him instead? WARNING – CONTAINS SPOILERS.

Hey "the closer" fans!

Wednesday December 7, 2011 at 6:45 PM

Anyone on here fans of the show "The Closer?"  Looks like Papa Swan a.k.a. Billy Burke is returning to the series!

http://www.daemonstv.com/2011/12/07/actor-billy-burke-to-cause-big-trouble-during-final-act-of-the-closer/

As any fan of the long-running TNT drama The Closer knows, actor Billy Burke (of Twilight fame) played Philip Stroh, the one “who got away” from Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick).

According to the folks at TV Line, Burke will be back as Stroh for – SPOILER WARNING!!! – the final two episodes (set to air next summer) of the series in a faceoff with Brenda in which she is investigating the makeshift cemetery of a serial killer that will cause Stroh to resurface.

Back at the close of season four of this TNT drama, Stroh was “introduced when the suspect in a series of rapes backtracked on his confession”, pointing a finger as his own attorney instead. At the time and ever since, Brenda could never find enough evidence to actually pin the crimes on Stroh. Since then she has dedicated a room of her and Fritz’s home to tracking the unsolved case.

The next new episode of the limited fall/winter run of ‘The Closer’ will air on Monday, December 12 at 9/8c. The final six episodes of the show’s final season will air next summer.

WHO ELSE IS EXCITED!!??!!!
