Harry Potter is almost over and I am bereft

Sunday July 3, 2011 at 4:53 PM

So, I've been gobbling up anything Potter-related I can find.

Fortunately, my Harry Potter EW was delivered directly to my door (well, building), and I am reading that bad boy like it's going out of style.

Do I need a SPOILER WARNING for a magazine issue?

If so, SPOILER WARNING!!!, but not for Harry Potter.

In the group interview, it is mentioned that Hugh Grant was originally thought of to play Gilderoy Lockhart, but the producers thought it would be too "Hugh Grant-y", so they tapped Kenneth Branagh, because he was so good at becoming a character.

Later, in the HP-centered Bullseye, EW asks why they couldn't have thrown in a wizard or goblin for

Dame Judy Dench:

Hell yes, Colin Firth:

or Kate Winslet:

I feel like the Harry Potter movies were, for the most part, cast perfectly, but I am wondering if there are any British actors that you think might have been a better fit? Or maybe the parts they could played that were cut in the book-to-screen adaption?

I keep thinking: where was the role for Helen Mirran? Clive Owen? Naveen Andrews? Brenda Blethyn? Michael Caine? Hayley Mills? Tim Roth?

Who would these actors (and others) play?

Thoughts? Mine are in the comments.

Percy Jackson Steals My Heart

Sunday July 3, 2011 at 3:27 PM

I've just finished reading the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, and I absolutely loved it. Now, I'm about to pick up The Hunger Games, but I was wondering if you lovely people have any other good recs or if you just want to talk about the awesomeness that is Percy Jackson.

What are your favorite books? What books make you grimace and turn away? I love fic, but sometimes I just need pages to turn. I need to know there is a world outside of Twilight, lol.

To Flounce or Not to Flounce?

Sunday July 3, 2011 at 7:50 AM

Hello Campers!

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend and happy almost 4th of July to my american cousins. My plans for a lazy Sunday of ficreading has been slightly ruined by the fact that I simply can't find anything decent to read. My ability to read ridiculously fast means that I have read A LOT of fic, and pretty much have read everything good that's complete and I'm up to date with most of the wips. I seem to have spent half the morning getting a chapter or two into a fic before rolling my eyes and saying "uh uh...can't do it." I remember a time when the word "flounce" wasn't in my vocabulary but these days it seems like it's all I do.

Reasons that make me flounce

1. UNBETA'D MESS. Now don't get me wrong, the odd typo and grammatical error will not put me off a well thought out story but when a story has two beta's and still manages to have glaring errors, it just doesn't give me confidence that the rest of the fic will be worth my time and effort.

2. Continuity Errors. This drives me crazy. I understand that some fics take well over a year to complete but come on, read over your own work or check out your outline once in a while. I read a story recently that I enjoyed but it pissed me off that in chapter 1 it was explained that Charlie had moved from Seattle to Forks. However, when Bella met Edward, who was also from Forks there was no mention of Charlie being the police chief there and in the Epilogue the author suggests that Charlie was still living in Seattle. It was confusing to say the least. The same story had characters popping over to Forks from Seattle as if was just around the corner. I mean I'm pretty sure it's at least a four hour drive. I didn't flounce in this case because it was a good story, but it still irked.

3. 300,000 plus words but little plot progression. This is kind of a recent thing that's really getting to me. I've read plenty of amazing fics that are very long. Emancipation Proclamation, Wide Awake, etc pretty much most of the Twilight Fanfiction Classics are epic stories. But in those stories there was plot progression in every chapter. Nothing was wasted. There was no, for example, extensive description of a shopping expedition with Alice, where every outfit was described in detail or every aspect of the characters day was explained. I flounced a story just the other day because in one chapter the author spent at least half a chapter describing a shower that Edward took. There wasn't even any masturbation going on in this shower, he was literally just getting clean. wtf?!

p.s. I've also noticed that a new story can spend the first chapters really moving the action along, but as soon as they get a lot of reviews and readers, they start to slow things down and dragging everything out. Does it need to take over three chapters to describe Edward and Bella's first date? Even Stephanie Meyer didn't pull that crap.

4. Annoying Alice - Alice was just not that annoying in the books. I love a well written Alice, but why do so many writers make her so pushy and shopping obsessed.

5. I suck at summaries Yeah? Well then your story probably sucks too. This is a case where I don't even the read the story, but it annoys me so it's on this list anyway!

6. James is a sinister asshole who rapes or attempts to rape Bella. I get why his character is used for this kind of drama but come on we've seen it all before. It makes me roll my eyes when this type of mess starts to go down. Usually in these fics Bella acts really dumb too. e.g. "Oh it will be alright if I walk to my car late at night through a dark alley even though I know a crazy guy called James is stalking me, oh yeah and i'm going to ignore Edward's call too because he's soooo overprotective." Ugh...just ugh....hate seeing this in a fic. Don't insult your audience's intelligence.

Phew! I feel better getting that off my chest. Sorry for the rant peeps.

Since I still can't find anything to read, why don't some of you entertain me by telling me some of the reasons you have flounced a fic?

Do you find that you flounce more that you used to?

Why do you think that is?

P.s. I think it would be good if we didn't name any stories by name so that we don't offend anyone, but feel free to allude to what story you are referring to. Or warn us if it's really bad!

Can we talk vibrators?

Sunday July 3, 2011 at 12:37 AM

Hi everybody!
Long time, no see.

I have questions concerning two types of vibrators. Can all of you wise ladies of the forest enlighten me?

1) There was a talk once somewhere in the TMI campfire about one really nice bullet, I don't remember the name, something like "doing the business"... Does anyone remember?
And the accompanying question: bullets frequently come with the remote control. Is it convenient?
I mean, the vibe itself is small, if I want something small, why should my hands be busy with a remote control which is 5 times bigger that the initial device? And how does it work - do you hold one thing in one hand and the other in the other? Seems complicated...
All of this seriously confuses me.

2) Rabbits and their pros and cons? Do all those fancy-shmancy features like rotating and beads inside really worth the money?

3) Tell me about your best device. I know about the wonders of Hitachi aka Jackhammer, but they don't sell it here in Russia.

I LOVE YOU YASMINA, BUT PLEASE DON'T POST PICTURES LIKE THAT ON THE FRONT PAGE. THANK YOU!

Health and Vitality

Saturday July 2, 2011 at 12:32 PM

So, I woke up a week ago with blocked ears. Following a trip to the doctors, a four hour wait, another doctor and a nurse, it emerges that I have an insane amount of earwax and my ears are completely packed with the stuff.

I've been using medical drops, olive oil, Sodium Bicarbonate drops and have an appointment to get them syringed, but not for two weeks.

Got any tips to help shift the stuff?

Got any old family recipes for chesty coughs/runny noses/headaches that your grandmother swore by? Come and share them here!

(For Health and Safety reasons - ALWAYS consult a doctor!)

Caveward

Friday July 1, 2011 at 6:41 PM

You know the fics where Bella finds Edward living in the wilderness and he's pretty much all...primal?

That's what I'm looking for.
I've read Feral and loved it, as well as The Unaccompanied Soul (which I'm sort of counting even though he was found in an old hospital) and The Vampire in the Basement.

Maybe Bella gets lost and a mountain man saves her.  I don't really care.  Just something where Edward acts on animal instinct alone (at least, in the beginning. Obviously, he'll probably develop mentally after time with Bella).

I started my own a while back (and never posted) after seeing this picture--

=p

Please and thank you!

Just Can't Explain It

Friday July 1, 2011 at 2:11 PM

I was watching Bones last night and this dude appeared:

Noel Fisher.

And for the whole episode I was thinking......I want to hug your face. I was mooning over him, for reasons I just can't explain. There is nothing about him that I usually like in a guy. Nothing. He's pasty and freckled and looks short. I am crushing on this man, but I don't know why.

So the topic of this campfire is: Unexplainable, unwarranted attraction.

Is there someone you're crushing on, that isn't your typical hunk?

Do you know why you find this person attractive?

Can you help me explain my attraction to this man?

With love,

OliveJuice.
