inhiding

a long shot.....

Monday July 18, 2011 at 7:58 PM

For the pure sake of art and photographic interest, what has been your favorite banner or blinkie? Not as it relates to the story, but because the presentation was worthy on its own?

I've been scouring the internet for this one....certain...picture. And, no, it wasn't a leaked BD photo or a manip of EC.

It was this photo that was used for a banner for a fanfic. Which has since been pulled, and the writer has pulled almost everything but their twitter, and now I can't find the photo. and the name of the story? I have no idea. The author? I think it was tby789. No, it's not from The Office.

The photo was a black and white, bride and husband, kissing and he was pressing her to the wall of a hallway. Her dress was undone and halfway off. Gorgeous photo, hot but tasteful.

I'm actually looking to replicate the pose because I'm modeling for my photographer friend. Not that I'm model material, I'm just the only girl crazy enough to join her in these kinds of escapades.

And, did I mention, it was totally hot.

If anyone has the photo saved from maybe having the fic saved or remembers what the heck I'm talking about and knows where to find it, I would LOVE it.

Otherwise, share your other favorite "artistic" faves!

ETA: MY favorite fanfic-y artsy photo has been found, thanks to Carlieking! Now jump in and post YOUR favorite banner/blinkie art/photos...

Because I'm tired of writing right now

Monday July 18, 2011 at 1:15 PM

I'm writing and I need a brain break.

I've always wondered this when seeing people's pennames, but what made you decide to choose that one?

Out of everything in the world, what made you pick that particular name?

WHAT

Monday July 18, 2011 at 8:11 AM

You guys

Stephanie Meyer might have stumbled onto something scientifically accurate accidentally.

Well, as scientifically accurate as vampires made out of diamonds can be.

A recent scientific discovery reveals a remarkable similarity between vampires and diamonds - other than the fact that they both seem, currently, to be a girl's best friend.

There usually isn't much to connect the toothy predators of the night and the sparkly little lumps of carbon that get put on engagement rings. But experiments done on what we assume to be a dark and stormy night prove otherwise.
Once upon a time, a team of scientists were working to develop new and exciting lasers. Their lasers were diamond-based. They had many successes, until they started working with a laser that shot ultraviolet light. It worked well at first, but sputtered out after about ten minutes. No matter what they did, they couldn't make the laser last. After some investigation, they found out that the laser died because it was dissolving the diamond.

Or rather, they were desorbing the diamond. Desorbing is gaining popularity among diamond aficionados because, unlike laser burning, it doesn't leave rough surfaces on the diamond. Under UV light, concentrated intensely enough, desorbing pops carbon atoms off the diamond. It starts with two UV photons hitting a carbon atom, producing an exciton. An exciton is an interesting little physics quirk. Often when photons hit atoms, electrons suddenly move out of their designated spaces within the atom. An exciton is the combination of both an electron and a space, coming out of the atom and traveling together. This pair can make its way through the diamond lattice until a carbon monoxide molecule comes off the surface of the diamond. We can now carve diamonds with smooth, clean lines.

But let's get to the important question. Is this why vampires shun sunlight? Are they made up of a netting of diamonds that desorbs in the sun? Let's look at the facts. Diamonds and vampires; they're both immortal, they're both extra tough and strong, they've both been known to sparkle in the light, and they're both cold. And it looks like desorbing only works in the presence of oxygen atoms, which means that if sunlight hit a vampire while he was falling into water, a la Daybreakers, the process would be stopped by the lack of exposure to air.

I think the results speak for themselves.

Six Weeks

Sunday July 17, 2011 at 12:05 PM

Is anyone reading Six Weeks by syrrah?

I don't normally read fics with no summaries. No clue how I found it, but I'm glad I did. And I'm curious to find out where this story is going.

Just from the first chapter: The story is basically about Bella and Renee house and dog sitting for a friend while she's off promoting her new book. Bella meets two handsome strangers while walking her friend's dog one afternoon, and they seem to make it a routine. The story is VERY well written and Bella's inner-monologue is unique and well thought out. I love the author's writing style and her nicknames for the character's are very interesting and original.

Give it a try :)

I need help!

Sunday July 17, 2011 at 9:12 AM

Hi,

I'm a huge Twilight fanfic reader and I have been toying with the idea of writing my own for quite some time. I have a plot bunny that I've been trying to write but I'm not sure if I am any good at it. English isn't my first language, I'm French and I'd welcome any help that you can give me: a co-author, a beta/pre-reader or even adopting my story as long as I can participate. I've already began writing the first chapter and have many ideas on characters, plots and twists.

Here is a brief summary: Bella wakes up is an hospital greatly injured but with no memory of who she is. Dr Edward Cullen is the neurologist that saved her and try to help her remember. How dis she get hurt or by whom? And why no one seems to be looking for her?

Thank you in advance for your help

Angie

Late Bloomer?

Saturday July 16, 2011 at 8:20 PM

So,

I'm 19-years-old, nearly 20, and I'm in the midst of my first big "crush."

There's a guy I work with that I'm totally stupid around. I've talked to him a handful of times, and the conversations lasted all of ten minutes.

I know I'm just attracted to his looks, but my God, the looks are damn near enough.

Help a girl out? I don't even know what I want help with. I probably won't ever see him again come September, so I'm on the fence as to whether I should try to strike a friendship up or if I should continue my cold-shoulder, witchy routine, where I basically ignore his presence. (I'm so good at ignoring him.)

Gah, I've just never felt like this before! And I feel so stupid for getting so worked up over one guy!

Perfect Fic is Perfect

Saturday July 16, 2011 at 2:24 PM

We all have our favorites.

We all have our various loves and likes.

Even with those favorites, however, there are alway, always a few things - minor or even major - that we'd have preferred to have been done differently. Doesn't mean we don't love it... not at all.

But I don't want to talk about those fics.

What I do want to know is do you have a fic that you call your PERFECT fic?

Meaning that there is not one tiny little thing that you wish had been done differently.

Think hard about it. What makes it perfect? What do you love so much about it?

WiPs or Completes

Pls to list no more than 3.

ETA: Let me clarify. I'm not asking for your favorites. I'm asking for what you consider to be the PERFECT FIC. This doesn't actually have to be the favorite of your favorites. It just has to be something that you would not alter in any way at all. My "perfects" are in my favorites but they are probably not my absolute favorite fic ever...

Breaking Dawn Edward v. Twilight Edward

Saturday July 16, 2011 at 10:14 AM

Lettuce discuss, shall we?  Are you partial to the new Edward or the old Edward?  Twilight Prom Edward is ultra yummy, bouffant hair or no.  Breaking Dawnward scares me a little -- it's like the personification of all those Domwards rolled into one ... with uber-evil eyebrows.  WHY does every director feel the need to recreate a character who is never supposed to change??!!

Author Notes

Saturday July 16, 2011 at 8:16 AM

I'm now working on my seventh multi-chapter twific and I've written three one-shots for various contests and I've noticed an evolution in my Author Notes.

When I first started writing fanfic, I had ANs at the beginning and end, a disclaimer with every chapter, my notes were chatty and conversational and sometimes I'd react to reviews that had been written. I'd ask for more reviews (but I never held the story hostage in any way).  I even am embarrassed to admit I was defensive in a few of them in reaction to criticisms I'd received.

Now, I only put one disclaimer at the beginning of the story and usually it is simple and to the point. "I don't claim ownership of the Twilight Saga which belongs to Stephanie Meyers" or something of that nature.  Truly, disclaimers are worthless and basically just admit you know you are doing something that may be infringing on copyright.

I usually only put an informational AN at the end of my chapters now.  I might give a link (which invariably ff.n screws with.  It says you can link to sites on ff.net but you can't. It still screws with any link unless you cammoflague it.)  Or I might include a historical tidbit (because as a teacher I CAN'T HELP MYSELF).  Or I might put a recipe that I describe in the story.  I might tell them there's a visual on my Live Journal and the like.

I never ask for reviews any longer but if I am having problems responding to reviews (which I call fanfiction.net Mr. James Jamesing me) I may thank the readers and I always try to thank the people who guided me in the writing of my chapter, my pre-readers and my beta.

I haven't done this yet, but I may start recommending fics to my readers.  I've run across some great ones recently.

I feel more comfortable doing it like this but I won't go back and change my old AN's because I feel it shows my growth -- or lack thereof.

To be honest, I've seen where AN's have ruined the story. They got too chummy, too squeally, too bitchy and sometimes just too much. (Let me be the first to point out, that I've been guilty of this myself. Now I try to practice more restraint.)  In one popular story, there was an AN once that seemed to be longer than the chapter and that was sort of funny and weird and the author was given hell for it.

So, my question on this is what do you think?  What makes a good AN?  What makes a bad one? Do you like them at the beginning or at the end?  What sort of content do you appreciate?  What do you dislike?

Your rollercoaster swings are giving me a whiplash

Saturday July 16, 2011 at 1:18 AM

Anyone here every been hurt by riding a rollercoaster? I feel a lot of pain on my upper back after a Disneyland ride (as in I couldn't even walk yesterday). I've been on rides before and stuff, but this is the first time it's happening to me. I've been to the pharmacy and I'm taking Arcoxia (omg I totally undersand you addicted to painkillers Inside Man Edward). I've made an appointment to go see the doctor first thing Tuesday after I get back from France, but I'm wondering, don't amusement parks like Disneyland have medical staff that helps out poor unlucky people like me? I've tried calling them, but apparently the only number available to the public is about reservations and they "can't help me"...
