I've been spending the weekend looking through the reviews, and I've noticed something interesting.
The reviews coming out of the UK and the Continent are extremely favorable with the exception of only a few.
The reviews being written by American critics who (theoretically) traveled to Europe for the opening are quite different. Very few like it, although the Huffington Post disliked the movie but praised Rob's performance (yes, it took me a while to recover from my faint.)
And I find myself wondering... why? Why, in the US, do the critics appear to lead with their hatred for Rob. There's a sense of resentment that's almost palpable, and I find it troublesome.
Now granted, it's quite obvious that critics who didn't like the film most definitely didn't understand it, but the headlines around the States are the critics are "mixed." But if you look at the UK and European reviews they're not.
Aside from Rob hate, I have a theory. Is it because Cosmopolis is, first and foremost, us? The Wall Street Journal wrote a scathing review, clearing showing its offense that capitalism was the critical target of the film. In fact, that review has been carried, verbatim, through a number of American review sites.
Is that it? Are we so narrow-minded that we look at this film and recoil in horror because it's representative of the worst of what Capitalism can be, and react by condemning the film instead of ourselves?
Don't get me wrong, I'm as much a capitalist as the next guy. But in Cosmopolis, Packer earned billions by producing nothing, and it's very much that mode of business that brought the entire world to a screeching halt a few years ago.
So what do you think? Why is Europe glowing while the States, where the film hasn't even opened, gives it a 55% favorable rating?
Anyway, I guess you need a rec, so I'm a'gonna give you an oldie but a goodie that never got the attention it deserved.
