While looking through the reviews for WFE, there seemed to be a pattern, and not a good one. The movie, at best, has mixed reviews. The general consensus seems to be it's boring, plodding, dull, lifeless... And they are laying blame at the feet of Rob, and Reese. Don't get me wrong, there are a few nice reviews. Nobody shouting their praises upon high, but... nice. Generally those reviews are complementary of the sets, and score, Christoph Waltz, and of course, Tai!
This was a big test for Rob, and it seems like he may have eeked 'passible' at best. I'm a little disappointed.I wanted so much for him to have 'hit this out of the park'. I'll still go see the movie, but after reading the book, i had high hopes, which don't seem to have been realized.
Here are a few of the less than complimentary comments about Rob's performance:
"As sadists go, this guy's an amateur next to Waltz's "Basterds" bad boy, but the actor is so talented, he commands every moment that he's on screen, further highlighting how dull fellow Oscar winner Witherspoon and "Twilight" heartthrob Pattinson are."
"The romance is utterly predictable and uninvolving, with barely a spark igniting between Witherspoon and Pattinson." --David Germain/Associated Press
"Pattinson, freed of his "Twilight" skin glitter, doesn't seem entirely freed of his "Twilight" persona; he's filmed here like a teen idol (the sunlight always seems to be uncannily caressing Jacob's cheekbones) and spends most of his time picturesquely brooding." --Moira Macdonald/Seattle Times
"His main problem seems to be his leading man, Pattinson, who, at least in this early stage in his career, doesn’t have the screen presence to hang with Oscar-winning co-stars Witherspoon and Waltz. As a result, a film that aims for epic is for the most part inert, ambling along slowly for the better part of two hours before collapsing upon itself in a brief, gloriously overwrought finale." --Thomas Leupp/Hollywood.com
"You know how they say to find one thing and do one thing well? Well, Pattinson's thing is glowering."
"But the problem isn't just miscasting or the cheesiness of the material. It's Pattinson's increasingly predictable, dour persona."
"So what's going to happen to Pattinson, who these days seems well on his way to becoming the most tiresome leading man since Kevin Costner? " -- Mary Elizabeth Williams/Salon.com
