I received a Kindle Keyboard for Christmas and have been looking over the Freebies list on Amazon- there are TONS of books on there that I haven't read.

I have narrowed the first 4 down and would like some input. Which would you read first? Would you NOT read one of them? If you've read any/all- did you like it?

Thanks-J

Need something to read?

Wednesday December 28, 2011 at 8:32 AM

I really want to rec an author: Isannah

I've finally been reading again (yay holidays!) and I stumbled on her Christmas-story 'Secret Santa Swan Style' and since then, have pretty much (re-)read all of her stuff (she's got 10 stories on her FF profile). She's really good! Her stories have good plots, are quite original, are very well written, and I generally love her Bellas and Edwards. All of her stories are AH, by the way. But to my suprise, her reviewcounts are not all that high, which leads me to believe that perhaps her stories aren't found that easily? I figured that this author deserves some more attention and is definitely worth my first campfire... so, I hope you enjoy and spread the love!

Happy Holidays!

ETA: I'd like this to be interactive, so tell me: why do you think some authors aren't getting attention you think they deserve? And if you've read something by Isannah, what do you think of her work? I'm curious!!

In the Land of Milk and Honey?

Wednesday December 28, 2011 at 3:28 AM

Hi!

I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find the completed version of In the Land of Milk and Honey.   I know the original author pulled the story but it was adopted and finished by someone else.    Now I can't find it.       Anyone know where it might be located now?

Thanks!!

Here is a rec of one of my current favs for your trouble:

Problems with reviews on FF.net?

Tuesday December 27, 2011 at 4:43 PM

Since last morning I've gotten problems answering to reviews on FF.net.

The new reviews don't show in the review page, and if I click on the direct link to answer, I get an error message.

Is it happening to anyone else?

I'm replying sending private messages to the kind people who's submitting reviews.

Thanks,

- Raum

I know, I know, you want a rec:

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7084822/6/A_Matter_of_Life_and_Death

Forget being scared to death, Bella Swan isn't even scared of death, something that both greatly annoys and—even if he won't admit it—entices Edward Cullen. If only she weren't trying to destroy him. Collab w/ WhatsMyNomDePlume for FGB.

I'm loving it. It's sooo well written! It's truly a little gem and is complete, so run to read it!

No one wants to kiss a girl in black

Tuesday December 27, 2011 at 3:58 PM

Finally.  FINALLY.  Last night I finally was able to watch the first two episodes of Downton Abbey on PBS.  I watched episode 3 online today but I think I have to wait for my local PBS to rerun episode 4.  And season 2 starts next month, right?  I love it!

Does Mr. Bates tone of voice and facial expressions remind anyone else of Russell Crowe?  And Gwen sometimes reminds me of Emma Stone.

I need a Downton Abbey-ish fic.  I'm reading A Forbidden Love and Nightingale.  What other good ones am I missing?

To self-pimp or not?

Tuesday December 27, 2011 at 3:53 PM

A passing comment in another campfire got me thinking about authors pimping their own work here and on other ff sites.

Are you put off when an author promotes her (or his) own work?  Does it make you skip over the story?

If you're an author, do you start posts here or on other sites to let users know about your story?

I dislike doing it, but I sometimes feel like authors don't have much choice and really need to use any reasonable means to publicize their stories.  And  on some level, if you don't have confidence in your own work, how can you expect others to be interested in it?

When does it cross the line and become annoying?

For your time, here's a rec for a fic by the wonderful Denver Popcorn, "World's Most Dangerous Dad":

ADF Ads > Psychic Friends Network?

Tuesday December 27, 2011 at 3:32 PM

So, a couple of months ago I tweeted this:

A couple other campers and I were playing a game on Twitter, refreshing ADF to see what ads came up (and clicking them, of course!)  First I got maternity clothes and shoes, then maternity clothes and a family sedan... etc.  The maternity ad wouldn't go away!

So I started thinking... hmmm... I have been a little nauseated lately... and I suppose I am a little late...

Then the next day, this happened:

OK, just kidding.  Besides, I only wish that my belly was that flat : P

But for real, this happened:

And then hubs and I did some smiling, and a little freaking out, because this will be baby #3 and was somewhat of a surprise.  But we're thrilled, really, and I wanted to share the amazing power of ADF's psychic ads with the rest of you fine campers!

So, what are your ads telling you today?  I've got Google+ telling me they can help share my important news...

And make sure to feed the trees and click the ads!

Bells & Megs are Opening Up the Kitchen Again

Tuesday December 27, 2011 at 11:40 AM

And the Plot Thickens...

A cooking ground for writers

What we’re cookin’...

  • Plot Bunnies! Ever have a plot bunny that needed some spice? Who said anything about too many cooks? The more the merrier, here! Bring your undercooked plots or ideas, and help others hash out their stories, too.
  • Your Characters! Feel like your characters are just skin and bones? Come chat with your friends and see if they can help you create the perfect recipe for meaty greatness.
  • Basically anything related to your fic that you need help with!

Allergies...

  • We’re allergic to negativity! Constructive criticism and suggestions are welcome, but please try to stay positive and productive!
  • And pilfering, too! There will be plenty of story ideas being discussed, so please stay respectful to your fellow authors by not using another's idea as your own - unless given explicit permission by the author first and then giving due credit, of course. No eating off someone else’s plate unless they say you can!

Food Bank...

  • Donations! Have some untouched plot ingredients that have been sitting in your cabinet for far too long? Come drop them off at our Food Bank and help another hungry author!
  • Pick up! Need some ingredients for your writing? See what ideas have been left for a good home.

You’ve given us an excuse to use the kitchen for the first time.

So, come on in and share your ideas! Maybe someone will have that perfect plot point that pushes your story from good to great, and hopefully you’ll be able to do the same for a fellow author!

Weird Question

Tuesday December 27, 2011 at 11:16 AM

I am not sure if we are still in FFA mode. I hope so.

If not, I will delete.

About 3 weeks ago, I noticed that my Coke suddenly tasted weird. I threw it out. The next day, THAT coke tasted weird.

Around the same time, I noticed that certains smells bothered me. My hubs had to through his body wash out. Cleaning products are intolerable.

Now, everything tstes off. I can't stand the smell of any perfume/soap/cleaning product etc..

EVEN WINE!!

As you can see, I have reached RED ALERT status once my wine started to taste off.

This is the weirdest thing that has ever happened to me and it seems to get worse by the day.

Everything has the same weird musky/black licorice type of smell.

Have any of you ever heard of this happening to anyone?

*** NOT  PREGGERS- NO WAY JOSE..tubes are tied! :0)  But not even when I was preggers--were smells so bad to me!

REC: Because we are talking about smells- I give you what has to be be, without a doubt, the smelliest of Edwards

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5337013/1/The_Emperors_of_Washington

Edward is a killer. But it can't be explained away by his vampire nature. He's just a sociopathic, human teenager. CAN I MAKE A LOVE STORY OUT OF THIS? ExB.

You Do Smell Good...

Tuesday December 27, 2011 at 11:00 AM

I'm out of perfume.  I love what I've been wearing for the last few years -

But I think I want to try something new.  A friend told me she thought I would like Marc Jacobs, but I don't know which one.  I tend to get overwhelmed after I smell a few scents in the store.  In the past I've worn Romance by RL, Prada, & Obsession by CK.

What is your favorite perfume or what do you rec that I should try?

BTW, to pay for the perfume I think I'm returning MIL's gift.  Is that bad?  Hubs tells me it's not.  She got me this --

It has great reviews but IDK - I mean I *think* I have pretty good skin and for the $$ I might would rather have the perfume.  But I feel kinda bad - what if she asks me what I think of it?  Does anyone use a facial cleansing system like this?  Or, what are your thoughts on returning gifts you think you might not use?

Thanks for your help!

Funniest wedding night in fanfics

Tuesday December 27, 2011 at 7:09 AM

Ok so my question is what's the funniest wedding night you have ever read in fanfics? Yeah right, not the hottest but the funniest.

This is the funniest I have read..

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7465550/1/Love_Comes_After_Wedding

Edward Cullen is in for a Marriage of Convenience with his best friend's Tomboyish sister- Isabella Swan.

I want to read more like it. Recommendations? :)

Sci-Fi book requests!

Tuesday December 27, 2011 at 1:04 AM

Hey chicos, I have a two fold request.

First, there's this book I read years ago and loved, and for the life of me can't remember the title or that many details. I want so much to read it again, but am having SUCH a hard time finding it. Here's what I remember, if it rings any bells. It's cover was white. It was a Sci-Fi book on an alien planet with reptilian creatures? The story was like three books in one. The first was the history that built up the world. It was a desert land. The creatures started with or had a strong "K" sound in the name they were called. There was like this huge sexual element, but it wasn't graphic or anything, just, I remember it being different, and magical.

OH my gosh, could that have BEEN any more vague? I'm never gonna find this book.

ANY whoo . . . the other part of my request is for some FAVORITE Sci-Fi or Sci-Fi/Fantasy reads. I want to be immersed in a whole different world. Different creatures, structures, EVERYTHING. I'm not huge on technology being a factor on the story, actually I'd prefer worlds less technology advanced (but it's not a big issue). BUT I'd love to have new creatures/aliens/worlds. It can be a romance or a tragedy, doesn't matter as long as it doesn't deal with vampires (tired of that, gasp, I know) or werewolves or even humans for that matter (although their incorporation would be okay).

I just love Sci-Fi and want some good reads!

So if anyone has any awesome read suggestions I'd love to hear them! Or get in here and talk favorite Sci-Fi books too!

ETA: OR does anyone know of any good ways to find books they've been searching for? Sites or resources? Or sites to help choose books to read?

ETA: The book has been found!! Thanks everyone. OMG, I can't even explain how excited I am to have this.

Holiday Drama

Monday December 26, 2011 at 10:16 PM

I desperately need some advice on a Mother in law problem!

Here's the situation:

My mother in law has canceled the day before every single major holiday this year! Easter, Turkey day, and yup, now Christmas. Every time she suddenly become ill the day before said holiday and can't come over, then whines and moans saying she's on her death bed (I kid you not, she claims she might die every time and she's serious - she's a hypocondriac (sp?) btw....if she hears about a disease, she has it). Then she complains once said holiday is over, that she is all alone out here and that the last time she was sick she would have died all alone in her chair with no one knowing...blah blah blah and such bullshit cause my husband runs around like a chicken for her and does just about everything she asks for but nothing he does is good enough or enough in her eyes. She moved here about 4 years ago and now expects us to be at her beck and call 24/7.

Anyway, we were at her house on the Friday before Christmas and I even hinted to her then, jokingly saying that she better be there for Christmas or I was going to return her presents  - she said she felt fine and would definitely be there. My kids are 14, 7, and 7 and all of them were upset/sad when she canceled yet again. This brought out my mommy bear side, and...well, I was pissed that she upset my kids! So when I called to wish her a Merry Christmas and she was immediately whining and then said in her whiny voice, "Just go ahead and have Christmas without me *cough, cough*", well....I lost it. I told her that there were 5 ppl here that wanted her to be here and she was choosing to stay home alone. She told me not to make her feel worse than she already did about it. I doubt she felt bad about it at all, since she does it every single time! How bad could she really feel?

Do you think I was too harsh? Am I being an uncaring b*tch?

My husband talked to her today and she told him I hurt her feelings, to which he did call her out on the fact that she has done this on every single holiday this year and that she has done this to her other son as well before she moved here. It wasn't my intention to hurt her feelings but my God, we predicted she would pull the same bullshit and sure enough she did. She constantly needs to be the center of attention or she gets all depressed and poor, poor me. I've just hit my limit, I don't know what to do now or say to her...

Advice, please? I know she probably won't be talking to me for a few weeks since she's mad at me, so I'm trying to figure out if I should call her or just let it go...?

New light on Jacob...

Monday December 26, 2011 at 8:48 PM

My uncle sent me a people mag cover about Taylor (Jacob) coming out and proud. He was happy, I was sad (all the hot guys seem to follow this route).

Had anyone else seen this?
