"Every one of those scripts sucked."

Wednesday February 8, 2012 at 1:43 PM

Several years after Catherine Hardwicke helped kick off "Twilight" fever by helming the series' first film, the director is opening up about the ups — well, more the downs — of being involved with the franchise.

"Every one of those scripts sucked," she told New York magazine's Vulture blog about the first five screenplays for the 2008 adaptation handed to her by Summit Entertainment. "Oh, Lord, did they suck. I thought the script was horrible, but then I looked it up on the Internet and I thought, 'OK, it's based on a book and people tend to like it. There's gotta be something there.' "

After some research about the fandom behind the franchise and some in-depth discussions with Summit about how she wanted to rewrite the script and how she wanted the film to look, she changed her mind.

"So I read the book and I thought it captured that feeling of being madly in love," she said. "And I thought, 'That's kind of a good challenge, to see if, as a filmmaker, I could make you feel that giddy, crazy.' "

Her reservations about the film were addressed, but Hardwicke does still have one slight regret. In the interview, she recalls the burgeoning on-set romance between "Twilight" megastars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. There were, however, two causalties of that romance. Pattinson was dating "Twilight" co-star Nikki Reed at the time, and Stewart was involved with Michael Angarano.

"He's a wonderful actor," Hardwicke said of Angarano. "He was in [Hardwicke film 'Lords of Dogtown,'] one of my favorites, so I felt pretty bad because I love him and they were such a great couple."

We pretty much knew, as a fandom, that the scripts were nothing special. But I'm curious as to why she waited until now to say something. And then I start thinking well, why didn't she try harder to improve things if she had reservations? Also, Nikki and Rob legit dated? This whole time I thought that was just a rumor the tabloids started to create drama... was I wrong?

have something that you don't want or need but can't just throw it away? too lazy for craigslist/ebay/etsy? don't mind shipping to a total stranger?

well, then have i got the campfire for you. come on down~

rules:

-start a comment in this campfire listing what items you want to part with.

-give it to whomever calls dibs first. don't be picky!

-state whether you're willing to ship internationally.

-the receiver of your crap may offer to pay for shipping, but don't ask.

-take care of ~business via PM. please do not post your email or heaven forbid your address on ADF.

-do a strike-thru on items that have been claimed. helps alleviate confusion!

-something new:

don't be a greedy gus.

the last few freecycles, there have been a few people who go a little crazy claiming stuff left and right. i get it; you're excited, and there is some truly rad stuff being offered up, no strings attached! however, it bums some people out that there is someone sitting there, claiming WAY MORE stuff than anyone else. don't be that guy. try and limit yourself to a few things, mmkay?

now, have fun, be generous, get some new stuff, and enjoy not adding to the earth's landfill problems. oh, and take my offerings. i'm cleaning out my beauty products, gents!

And Recs like the movie the Vow?

Wednesday February 8, 2012 at 8:28 AM

I know I just saw a campfire about the movie The Vow  but this is asking a different question.  I was wondering are there any fics out there like The Vow? You know,  a well written fic with Bella or Edward having no memory of one another. Just wondering because I know I have come by some but I don't know if I ever got to read them.

Rec:

Summary: Edward is a self-centered college drop-out, waiting on tables and living an empty life. Redemeption arrives in the guise of a quirky customer who offers him some much-needed advice for happiness. Does Edward have the character to rise to the challenge?

OMGosh, loving his proper British accent.  I wish he'd move back to the UK just so he'd hone his accent back to its original.

This looks pretty damn good:

In this rec, Vampward is a Brit living in Forks:

On her first day of school, Bella stands up to Edward: Forks' own psychotic jerk. Little does she know, Edward is a centuries-old Englishman with a taste for human blood. Will they fall in love, or kill each other first? Rated M for violence.

Hierarchy of Priority in fic - Parents vs SO

Tuesday February 7, 2012 at 8:29 PM

This may be a can of worms but we'll see. I just read a fic and it brought back what's bugged me a lot in fics and books and really TV, movies and the like.

The battle between a person's parents or parent vs their spouse, SO, boyfriend, girlfriend, etc.

More often than not in fics, movies, books, TV and so on oddly it's the parent or parents who are completely insensitive or just flat out rude and cruel to the point where you're wishing the character could divorce they're parents because they just need to get away from that kind of person, energy in they're life.

Then you have their child who for some reason sort of leaves they're SO out to dry while momm, dad or both is shooting bullets in their direction.

No jumping in front of them, no "Hey now Mom, I love you but she's my wife," no you need to leave since you're my parents and you're disrespecting my spouse and really me in MY house I pay for with my own money that you have no claim over.

I've always found this...interesting

Who do YOU defer to? Who comes first? Spouse, SO, etc or your parent/parents? Both because....?

This curious mind wants to know because if I go based on fics I'm like why is anyone in any sort of relationship, lol.

ETA: KIDS aren't in the equation because that's it's own CF. This is just your partner vs your parents.

It's Grammatime...

Tuesday February 7, 2012 at 7:21 PM

I saw a tweet earlier referring to betas... and it needed a beta.

I laughed, and then went like this...

...because of the number of times I see this specific #grammarfail.

And I got to thinking... how many times do I do things that make other people feel the same way??

SO LET'S SHARE!

What are your grammar pet peeves?  If you're a beta, what do you see WAY too often?

Maybe if you share them here you'll start seeing them less!

Mine will be inside. :)

5 More Days!!!

Tuesday February 7, 2012 at 2:41 PM

I can hardly wait until Sunday when The Walking Dead returns.  I have missed this show so much!  Who else is anxious to find out what happens?  Who is your favorite (or least favorite) character?

My favorite character is this dude below.  My least favorite is Andrea, who I wish would die or be zombified already.  My  husband bought "me" the comics the show is based on for Christmas (kind of like he bought "me" all of the Sopranos dvds over the years even though he's the only one who ever watches them and I never even mentioned wanting to watch the Sopranos, lol!), but I don't want to read ahead and see if she buys the farm or not. I want to be gratified surprised if/when it happens.

ADF: Weekly Rec Campfire

Tuesday February 7, 2012 at 2:38 PM

As always, this weekly campfire tells us

what you are reading or

what you have read that you think everyone needs to read as well!

It is very important that you include links and even more important that you not only give a description of the fic, but tell us

WHY YOU LOVE IT!

Don't forget to give us a link.

This week, your challenge is to rec us the angstiest fic you ever read that you LOVED. One that really brought tears to your eyes. The fic you will never forget or the fic that you are dying to update so you can feel the pain once again. I always ask for happyfic. It was time I asked for some pain!

BUT REMEMBER, YOU CAN REC ANYTHING. NOT JUST ANGST. WE HAVE HAD LOADS OF REC-POSTS LATELY AND THOSE CAN GET LOST IN THE SHUFFLE, SO MAKE SURE TO PUT WHAT YOU WANT PEOPLE TO READ HERE. STUDIES* SHOW THAT PEOPLE READ IT!

Also, if you are reading something that someone else recs, you can discuss it or concur here. That helps campers decide if they want to read it as well!

Books?

Tuesday February 7, 2012 at 2:18 PM

Hey all!

Just wondering if anyone knows of any actual books for sale (or Kindle) that are along the lines of The Submissive?

I guess what appeals to me about that one is the very strong male character, who needs to control and dominate (but not in a slave way) and a woman who decides to let herself become controlled by someone.

Not necessarily looking for one of those .99 cent Kindle books that are just smut smut smut, but a real, fleshed out, good read. Character development, etc.

Secondary, if nothing like that exists, a good romance with a controlling male (not necessarily Dom).

Thanks!

I'm on a weird kick....

Unbecoming Chapter 5

Tuesday February 7, 2012 at 1:12 PM

Unbecoming Chapter 5

So any theories? Why did Edward divorce Bella so suddenly, even though he knew that she was pregnant (but obviously still cares about her a lot)? Why did the Cullens stopped talking to her as well? What really caused her miscarriage and why doesn't she want Edward to know? And anyone love Emmett in this story as much as I do? Oh and Tanya and Jane as well!

Come in and discuss!

ADF or FF????

Tuesday February 7, 2012 at 11:44 AM

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I've been wondering about this for a while now, and don't recall seeing it specifically addressed.

Should I be reading and giving reviews on ADF instead of FF?

I am so grateful for ADF.  It's a pretty rare day that I don't at least take a peak from my phone to see what y'all are posting about and recommending.  I'd like to be a good camper and support ADF and it's authors.  I truly appreciate everyone's efforts to make this such a unique place to hang out and/or lurk.  But it seems my habit is to actually read stories on FF, not ADF.

So, as writers, do you prefer to have your read and review counts show up on FF or ADF?  Is there a benefit to having higher numbers at one place or the other?  Does ADF benefit by having higher numbers?

REC:  If , like me, you put off reading LJ Summers Open Up Next to You due to angst, the sequel (Tender is the Night) has progressed enough that you can really dig in and enjoy them both.  The new character in the sequel has the potential to be one of the best ever in AU fan fiction!  (I didn't add a link since I wasn't sure if it was better to link to FF or ADF).

Well... their creativity, at least...

I'm lame. I know. Now you do, too.  Just go in the campfire already.

What we’re cookin’...

  • Plot Bunnies! Ever have a plot bunny that needed some spice? Who said anything about too many cooks? The more the merrier, here! Bring your undercooked plots or ideas, and help others hash out their stories, too.
  • Your Characters! Feel like your characters are just skin and bones? Come chat with your friends and see if they can help you create the perfect recipe for meaty greatness.
  • Basically anything related to your fic that you need help with!

Allergies...

  • We’re allergic to negativity! Constructive criticism and suggestions are welcome, but please try to stay positive and productive!
  • And pilfering, too! There will be plenty of story ideas being discussed, so please stay respectful to your fellow authors by not using another's idea as your own - unless given explicit permission by the author first and then giving due credit, of course. No eating off someone else’s plate unless they say you can!

Food Bank...

  • Donations! Have some untouched plot ingredients that have been sitting in your cabinet for far too long? Come drop them off at our Food Bank and help another hungry author!
  • Pick up! Need some ingredients for your writing? See what ideas have been left for a good home.

You’ve given us an excuse to use the kitchen for the first time.

So, come on in and share your ideas! Maybe someone will have that perfect plot point that pushes your story from good to great, and hopefully you’ll be able to do the same for a fellow author!

bella and edward are in university (grad school maybe?). they are busy with school and after a week of exams or something they finally get to bang. lol. bella was a virgin or something and apparently edward has such a big penis that bella can't walk and jokingly asks edward to carry her to the get together that they have to attend to in honor of edward. idk it was pretty much a PWP but it's bothering me so much!

Grow hair GROW...

Tuesday February 7, 2012 at 1:59 AM

So I am getting antsy, waiting for Rob to emerge from somewhere...

HOPING that his hair is shooting out of his head at some heightened, magical growth rate.  Then this appears:

Looks like there's nuthin' there.   Ah well, at least he isn't simultaneously growing a hippie beard.

Trying to think of a rec that's about HAIR.   Can you?

Okay, can't think of one, so I'll rec this fabulous story, which really should be a proper published book.  I love the scarred and tormented scientist Edward and the way they slowly fall in love.  The time travel is credible, I promise.  A smart, determined Bella too.  What's not to love?

CLOCKWORK

Bella is a scientist in 1942. In 2010, Edward suffers from a traumatic past. A chance event allows their paths to cross, but decisions they have not yet made threaten to tear them apart. AH
