Spring Break

Friday March 16, 2012 at 9:17 AM

It's that time of year, Spring Break, Easter Hols! What are you doing for this lovely break from Real Life? Going away, being lazy around the house, planning on eating more Easter Eggs than humanly possible??

We are doing the whole RV thing, to the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Arches, finishing up with the bright lights of Las Vegas! This is what it will probably be like:

Yeah, that's us. Hubs is almost as hairy as Robin Williams, and the 13yo has JoJo's attitude. And look, a baby Josh Hutcherson singing for all the Peeta/Hunger Games fans!

Come in and tell us your plans, or maybe relive that trip you took to Mexico when you were in College (if you can remember anything!!)

War on Women

Friday March 16, 2012 at 8:51 AM

So, I was just checking my facebook and a friend had this article on her time line.  I was curious, so I took a look.  I know nothing about the source (website) or how valid they are from a political perspective but I was seriously blown away by what I read.  I did a search and found many other sites carrying the "news" so I figured it's valid.

I try to stay away from politics (mainly because I have very low opinions of most politicians) but lately it feels like there is a religious war going on against women... and frankly... it's really starting to get to me.

Take a look at this article

http://jezebel.com/5893011/law-will-allow-employers-to-fire-women-for-using-whore-pills

What saddens me most is that it's a WOMAN who's bring this bill to light.  Really?  I just don't get it...

I'm so sick of hearing about religious freedom, you know what?  I have it just as much as the next person and if I don't believe in what YOU believe in that doesn't make me wrong and you right... it just means we have differing opinions.

Where is this going to end?

What do you think of the political environment and what can we do to stop this madness?

P.S. Rangers...we should have a politics tag :)

That awkward but satisfying moment...

Friday March 16, 2012 at 8:04 AM

...when you said "That's it, I'm out."

It could be a book or story you decided to stop reading, a movie you walked out on, a show or video that made you decide to see what else was on.

It could be a terrible friend you realized you couldn't deal with anymore, a family member you started avoiding, a jerk you refused to work with anymore.

It could be a job that was no longer worth your time and/or bull$#!% tolerance.

Share with us the moment when you decided you were sick of this crap, and this became your theme song:

ear worm: a piece of music that sticks in one's mind so that one seems to hear it, even when it is not being played.

I pretty much always have a song stuck in my head, and it's almost never the last song I heard on the radio. It's usually something completely random like "I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts" or the theme song from Perfect Strangers, or some ridiculous one hit wonder that hasn't hit a radio wave since 1992.

For example, this song has been stuck in my head since I woke up this morning and I'm gonna go loopy if it doesn't GET OUT:

What song is stuck in your head right now?

Or, spam me with better ear worms.

A Right Eff Up

Friday March 16, 2012 at 6:07 AM

Wednesday night I dyed my hair, like I do every 3 months or so, with the usual box of dye that I use all the time, except this time instead of a lovely copper colour, it went bright red...phonebox red. Now it was a nice shade, to be sure, but not on me, and not for my pharmacy ball on Saturday.

This led me to spending all yesterday morning in the shower, washing my hair with Head & Shoulders, washing up liquid, and ariel liquid tabs...it barely touched it.

In the end I used a delightful product called Colour B4 which has no bleach or ammonia and stripped the colour from my hair.

I want to know what you've 'effed up' recently - that you can laugh about now, of course. Or share some delightful mistakes from the internet.

Also, if you have an home remedies for correcting hair dye mistakes, or patching up holes in things, removing stains etc, come share them :D

The Hunger Games reviews are in!!

Friday March 16, 2012 at 5:22 AM

Today the embargo ended and film critics were given the go ahead to publish full reviews of The Hunger Games.

So far they have been overwhelmingly good.  I do not know what I was expecting from the critics to say, I feared that it would be the same as Twilight.  That they just wouldn't get it, but so far it looks like they do and the movie is currently averaging a 4 out of 5 star rating.

This can only boost the amount of bums on seats.  Before today they were tracking The Hunger Games to make over 100mil on its first weekend (it has already smashed the pre booking record) now it looks like it might make even more.  Some are saying it could be the biggest money maker of the year even bigger than The Dark Knight Rises (The Dark Knight made over a billion at the box office) although personally I doubt it.

Here are some of the things that had to say:

'As thrilling and smart as it is terrifying. There have been a number of big-gun literary series brought to screen over the past decade. This slays them all.'

‘The Hunger Games looks poised to usher in a brand new hit franchise and deserves all the credit it gets for its confrontational subject matter, delicately-orchestrated fight sequences and sci-fi sensibilities. For the teen/young adult audiences, films don't get much darker - or smarter - than this.’

‘Similarly well-chosen are Hutcherson as the charismatic yet sensitive Peeta, Tucci as blue-wigged Capitol presenting megastar Caesar Flickerman and Sutherland as series antagonist President Snow. In fact, for fans of the novels, it’s hard to pick out a single character that has been grossly miscast. The film's faults - of which there are few - are criticisms that could be aimed at the books themselves (its narrative similarity to Battle Royale, the tried-and-tested love triangle formula, the mutts) and Ross more than makes up for such blemishes with some sterling direction and impactful, yet carefully handled, scenes of violence.’

‘Ross has done more than churn out a faithful adaptation of the book. His vision of the world of The Hunger Games is bigger, scarier, darker, and more political than the books ever dared to be.’

‘What’s remarkable is the lack of cheese. Tacky effects, corny dialogue and creaky performances are all shown the door.’

‘A faithful adap, a grown-up teen movie and flaming good entertainment.’

‘You can’t take your eyes off Jennifer Lawrence as the ox-hearted, mud-freckled Katniss, who volunteers as her district’s female Games contestant to save her younger sister from the draft. She’s even more compelling here than she was in the 2010 indie Winter’s Bone.’

‘The Hunger Games is an essential science fiction film for our times; perhaps the essential science fiction film of our times. Whatever your age, it demands to be devoured.’

'The Hunger Games is a bold, intelligent and entertaining movie, and a brilliant adaptation of the book. If only all action films could be this good'

Sounds pretty good! The reviews are not perfect and they do pick up on some faults, but mostly it is praise.

Thoughts? So do you think this matters or not? How big do you think The Hunger Games is going to be?

Is anyone as buzzed as I am about this movie? LOL

I AM SO EXCITED!

(I will add links for reviews inside)

Roswell anyone?

Friday March 16, 2012 at 2:09 AM

So I've been exploring Netflix and have run across a couple of older series I loved. Blood Ties was great and I ended up getting both seasons and the books.

My kids think I've fallen off the end of the earth because of this:

I knew it was on 10 years ago, but for some reason never got around to watching it.  I've read the original books and am on the hunt for the series spin offs.

I know it's older school, but does anyone else like this series?  Can anyone rec any good fic from this?  (I did a search on the other fandoms cf's and didn't see any there.)

Your part:

What cancelled/completed TV series do you wish they would bring back or do reruns of?

Theatre used to film New Moon...

Friday March 16, 2012 at 2:06 AM

Is it free for all yet?

Heads up to all NM (movie) fans... or anyone who's planning to visit Vancouver for set-tours in the next little while, you might wanna consider visiting the Ridge Theatre, on Arbutus Street and West 16th Avenue (in the city of Vancouver itself).  It's getting TORN DOWN to make way for more expensive condos :-(

It's where they filmed the interior scenes for NM - where Bella had to sit thru an awkward 3-way date with Mike and Jacob ... so I suppose this is for all the Team Jacob girls.

(The exterior theatre scenes, where Jessica and Bella went to see a movie, Bella ran towards a bunch of punkheads and hallucinated Edward - those were filmed at another location.  Not the same place as the interior shots).

Anyone coming up to visit Vancouver this summer?

uh, if I still have to put up a rec - since it's free for all - it will be Cracked!

it's one of the VERY few WIPs i'm willing to follow - I jump up and down whenever i see an update (although the author forewarned about irregular updates, i'm still following!)

Cracked!
If Twilight sort of didn't make sense to you before, it really won't make sense to you now. A recharacterization of Bella and a satire of all the things that made you go, "Wait, what?" Dark humor, drama, and snark.

Out There For a Ranger. (ummmm, no idea why three 6 mafia is running through my head.)

This week has been another interesting week with controversies, arguments, tension, and an epic CAPSLOCK cf to get it all out.

I think it's a good time to show love to another Ranger. They weed through the multiple complaint, suggestion, and constructive criticisms pm's and comments and try to make this a pretty fun and comfortable place for the 30,000! campers. This week just re-affirmed for me that I couldn't and don't want to do what they do.

Capricorn75 is the next ranger deserving of appreciation. She rec's, reviews, hosts/judges contests, and is generally very encouraging.  Let's give her some love.

This is the campfire of Self Promotion: THE PIMP CAMPFIRE.

Tell us about what you or a friend write. If you beta something fantastic, let us know. If you are hosting a contest, tell us about it.

Don't be shy!

This weeks special pimp assingment

Instead of just posting a regular pimp with your summary and a link, tell us about one book or fic that inspired you. It could be the style or the content or something completely different, but a book or story that really made an impact on how you see yourself as a writer.

Too difficult? Ignore me and just pimp your stuff. I really don't mind!

Dark Shadows

Thursday March 15, 2012 at 3:11 PM

So today on Ellen, they showed the trailer for the new Johnny Depp/Tim Burton collaboration, Dark Shadows.

I remember the old show, but I simply MUST see this movie!

Unfortunately, the trailer isn't up on YouTube yet, but we do have this

So...what do you think?  Johnny a good vampire?

Let's discuss this movie, opening May 11

You guise!

Thursday March 15, 2012 at 1:32 PM

I totally watched The Hunger Games last night!

But yeah, the film came AFTER meeting what seems to be the nicest cast ever lol. (and a bonus Hemsworth)

It was amazing and i still haven't come to terms with last nights events, it still seems too surreal. I may fangirl, but i've never cried over that sort of thing before, but sat in the cinema screen last night with the cast introducing the film, i cried.... i was so overwhelmed. Then the film started and i cried more... then i laughed a little... then i snot sobbed all over the place... and yeah... it was amazing. Most accurate book to movie I have ever seen.

This is okay right cause it's about Hunger Games

To be interactive... when are you seeing the film? (I'm seeing it again on the 22nd) What are you looking forward to? Who in the cast would you like to meet?.... any questions about the film... if i can remember stuff?

OH CARLISLE

Thursday March 15, 2012 at 11:59 AM

On the heels of Peter Facinelli & Jennie Garth’s divorce and rumors of him cheating comes a blind item that suggests Facinelli may or may not have been shooting for the other team – something the woman who claims to have had an on-again off-again affair with Peter in 2009 and 2011 also hinted at to us in an exclusive interview.

It has been long rumored that Taylor Lauter, who has been linked to co-stars Taylor Swift and Lily Collins, daughter of Phil Collins, is actually gay – and now a certain report from BlindGossip.com suggests that Peter Facinelli may like things of the c*ck-a-doodle-doo kind too – something that corroborates what we were told by the woman-scorned. Meaning not only may another woman have played a role in the demise of his marriage to the Beverly Hills 90210 star, but another man as well. Papa Cullen sure seems to get around!

This just keeps getting juicier by the minute! We’ll be watching.

FINDING FOREVER

Thursday March 15, 2012 at 10:24 AM

How long have I been a member of the forest?  (Barring a brief menopausal ridiculousness)  Two years or so.

How many campfires have I lit touting a fict?  Never.  Never.  Never.  Ever.

BUT...

I HAVE TO TELL YOU TO GO READ FINDING FOREVER by SueObsessed.

I read this when it was up on Twilightedwhert as she was posting it probably two years ago.

It's a lovely vamp story about Felix who finds his true love; a human.

It will make you LOVE Felix and never see him as a bad guy again. I read it the first time right before New Moon came out and I wasn't too upset with him beating up Eddie, just because of this fic.

I wanted to reread this one and was so disappointed that she had taken it down.

Suzi, I can't tell you how delighted I am to see you posting it here.  Thank you.

Now, after I get rid of all these teenagers who are cluttering up my space, Ima gonna read.

Spring Thaw week

Thursday March 15, 2012 at 10:05 AM

Warmer temperatures are prevailing as Spring hits the Northern Hemisphere.

To celebrate spring, we're going to take a break from Fifty-Shades of Gray starting TODAY through next Thursday, March 22nd. We decided to do this after numerous Rangers chats and in keeping with the wishes of many of our Campers. Going forward, anything Fifty related will be deleted during our warm and sunny Spring Thaw week but legitimate discussions about BDSM are quite welcome!

ENJOY!

Use this post to comment on Spring Thaw or just chat about your day and lives!

ETA: All current Campfires are still open for discussion. Favorite them and expound away. :)
