Do fathers stay at home with children?

Friday December 3, 2010 at 5:30 AM

I was in a Christmas concert on Wednesday evening and met  a friend of mine that had her third child 8 months ago. She just returned to work a couple of weeks ago and now her husband stays home with the children for a couple of months.

I kind of started to wonder, would that be considered odd in your country / culture? That the father stays at home for a while when the children are young? From the families I know, it tends to be that the higher the socio-economic status is, the more common it is for the father to take a break from work for three - twelve months before the children "attend" daycare.

Some background information: here either of the parents has a right to stay at home with children under three years of age - and not to lose his/her job. I don't know the exact terms of maternity leave at the moment, but as far as I know some three months of it is designated for the mother, a fortnight for the father, and the rest (6 months, I believe) can be had by either.

So, is it common / done at all that the father stays home? If not, why not? If yes, does it come with any kind of "stigma" considering his career?

Can't sleep, begging for recs...

Friday December 3, 2010 at 5:24 AM

So, I haven't really been into FF since I discovered the Outlander series, I've been too addicted to all men things Scottish... SO I may have resorted to some really badly written cheapo romances on the kindle... but they're awful, and I can't take it anymore!!!

So, I'll settle, he doesn't have to be in a kilt, or even scottish, but he has to be sort of a knight-ish figure, and probably from some part of Europe.... I'm thinking from 800 bc to around 1750 ad??? Betrothals/arranged marriages, knight in shining armor, you catch my drift???

anyone? Bueller?

(please and thank you!!!)

I've recently become addicted to The Hunger Games series.

I plowed through all three books in two days and loved them.

I'm really getting a kick out of the "Mark Reads" blog while he goes chapter-by-chapter and describes his reactions and theories.  (By the way, I know I saw a few people here mention they thought it was a rip off of Battle Royale, and he brought up that concern too.  But after reading more, he's seeing big enough differences to feel it's not a rip off -- similar, but not a re-do.  Just an FYI in case you might ever want to read the series but that was holding you back.)   That blog is http://markreads.net/reviews/2010/11/mark-reads-the-hunger-games-chapter-1/   if you want to have a look.  Full on spoilers, though!

So, pop in and squee with me.   Did you like the outcome?  Did your ship sail or sink?  Are you glad you read the books or is that hours of your life you will never get back?

Who do you want in the roles for the film?

I want your Hunger Games fan fiction recs!   Did you know that ff.net only archives less than 3,200 fics for the series?  Which one of you is going to step up to be a passionate Hunger Games fanficcer?

Help me pop my campfire cherry, y'all.  I know we did this a week or two ago, but please you guise. I need more.

ETA: Hubby didn't believe me that this was real, so I went and found it on Amazon, and it is real, it really really is.  The (fake) reviews are also pretty funny.

What's made you go "WTF?!" lately?  I want pictures!

FAIL

Thursday December 2, 2010 at 10:38 PM

Why are the vampires and wolves wearing jackets for the big battle? They obviously don't get cold and the wolves would be too hot. They are not trying to blend in because everyone in this situation knows that they are vampires and wolves. Did anyone in the development of these movies read the books?

stories you miss

Thursday December 2, 2010 at 7:17 PM

So I was thinking recently about some completed stories I really love and how great it would be to get a surprise outtake or whatever in my inbox for one of them. Like, wouldn't it be awesome to get an outtake from Tropic of Virgo? Or a little glimpse into their future together? I don't know... I think it would be awesome. Maybe River Dam or Rhapsody in B (perhaps we can beg/nag some people here into making this happen). Or, idk, Bare? Some Living Backwards Bella and Edward smut? (high school please. also, brb, asking ciaobella)

If you could get an extra chapter/outtake/future-take/awesome smutty side-shot from a completed story you miss, which story would you choose? Why?

Here's some Edward and Bella for your time:

and another one, because you can't see rpattz's face in that one:

and because this makes me laugh every time I see it:

(I apologize for not crediting the person whose tumblr I stole these from, I don't rememberrrr who it was)

For everyone - not just parents - for a laugh

Thursday December 2, 2010 at 3:30 PM

Received this from a friend of mine - thought it'd be cute to share.

Parenthood

-- If it was going to be easy, it never would have started with something called labor!

-- Shouting to make your children obey is like using the horn to steer your car, and you get about the same results.

-- The smartest advice on raising children is to enjoy them while they are still on your side.

-- Avenge yourself -- live long enough to be a problem to your children.

-- The best way to keep kids at home is to give it a loving atmosphere ~~ and hide the keys to the car.

-- Parents: People who bare infants, bore teenagers, and board newlyweds.

-- The joy of motherhood: What a woman experiences when all the children are finally in bed.

-- Life's golden age is when the kids are too old to need babysitters and too young to borrow the family car.

-- Any child can tell you that the sole purpose of a middle name is so he can tell when he's really in trouble.

-- Grandparents are similar to a piece of string ~ handy to have around and easily wrapped around the fingers of grandchildren.

-- There are three ways to get something done: Do it yourself, hire someone to do it, or forbid your children to do it.

-- Adolescence is the age when children try to bring up their parents.

-- Cleaning your house while your kids are at home is like trying to shovel the driveway during a snowstorm.

-- Oh, to be only half as wonderful as my child thought I was when he was small, and half as stupid as my teenager now thinks I am.

-- Adolescence is the age at which children stop asking questions because they know all the answers.

-- An alarm clock is a device for awakening people who don't have small children.

Have a great day everyone!!!

OMG YOU wrote that?!

Thursday December 2, 2010 at 2:41 PM

I know a lot of the campers (and rangers) here write fanfic, and my super curious self would like to know:

What have you written?  (Links, please!)

What are you writing?  (Again with the links!)

What do you WANT to write?  (Obviously no links.  ::sadface::)

What about o-fic?  Did you do NaNoWriMo?  Are you published for realz somewhere so we can stalk you buy/read your awesome stuff?  ::cough::ominficdoesn'tcount::cough::

Also, could you please write whether your story is a WiP, completed, or abandoned (the latter so your fellow campers can prod you into finishing bribe you to finish it, of course).

Aid me in my procrastination from homework!  DAZZLE me with your literary brilliance!!!

ETA:  Holy crap, you guys are amazing!  I had no idea there were so many talented campers hangin' in the forest!  My 'to be read' list has freakin' exploded!  I can't wait to read them all!

Also, LURKERS, RANGERS, and BNAs/VIPs (I mean BNA in a non-derogatory way; the latter refers to the VIP authors here--they obviously don't need to provide links, LOL), please to be adding your stuff too!  I'd really like this to be as complete a list as possible.  Makes the stalking a lot easier.  ;-)

Damn that's good

Thursday December 2, 2010 at 1:29 PM

I just finished the Breaking News update.  I don't have the words to describe the level of awesomeness so I'll leave it to someone else.  But I am left thinking that I just got the best bargain I'll see today.  This is free, folks.  These stories and all of this hard work is available to us with not much expected on our end.

I know Thanksgiving was last week but I feel compelled to once again say thank you so much, writers.  Thanks for sharing your words with us.  I am so grateful.

So, the point of this little campfire is: which stories do you feel like you could have bought at a bookstore?  Which stories do you feel rise above and feel like a little bit more

antoher case of fic amnesia

Thursday December 2, 2010 at 11:19 AM

looking for a fic - here's the lo-down, or what i remember of it:

it's an HS fic.  bella's a tutor and she ends up getting badass edward as her tutee.  turns out he's illiterate.  the only one who knows is carlisle, but bella figures it out.  she helps him learn to read.  love and drama ensue.

i know there's a fic out there called The Tutor, but i didn't think that was the name of it.  i might be mistaken on that, b/c i read it a long time ago.  anyone recognize it?

off to read the breaking news update:O)

EDIT:  thanks for the help, ladies.  it is the tutor, then.  i thought it was called something more complicated.  i hate when i read completed fics so quickly that i don't save them anywhere and lose the names....

Random Questions are Random

Thursday December 2, 2010 at 6:59 AM

4 books, 1 partially leaked manuscript.  Lots of huh moments....

some character related....some editorial choices...and some how does that work?

Kyrene's island/money post got me thinking...and I have so many questions, I don't even know where to begin. So I'll start easy.

Carlisle - you work everywhere you move, y/y? Do you always use the name Carlisle? If so, does the Licensing Board, the Medical Association and the Social Security Administration find it odd that there are so many different doctors named Carlisle Cullen, cause over the last 70 years that the SSA has been around, I can't imagine you are using the same number to deal with those pesky taxes.

Here's your chance - pose your wtf q's (fashion choices are welcome! Parenting choices too! If it happened in the 4 published books + Midnight Sun, it's fair game!)  Dude, the q's about the volturi alone have to be epic...
