Disturbing Discovery

Thursday June 23, 2011 at 5:30 AM

So I was tooling around Amazon's weekly email of kindle offerings for .99 books. Low and behold when I clicked on one and advertisement appeared for this book:

The Billionaire Bum

and I think to myself...I've read a fanfic by that same exact name...

So I did a little digging...and it just so happens that it's THE SAME STORY by the SAME AUTHOR. I have read it, and another story she wrote.

She has made no effort to hide that these stories are the same, in fact the fic is still up on FFnet. In addittion, there are at least two other stories up on FFnet that have counterparts listed for sale on Amazon with the same exact titles and story summaries that are on FFnet.

She does have a few other books listed that don't correspond with her FFnet profile, so good for her for publishing her original work, if that's really what it is.

There have been numerous campfires about pulling to publish and such. We've even seen fic stolen and published on Amazon before...but this, to me is extrememly disturbing.

Forget pulling to publish - at least these authors attempt to get rid of their  fanfic versions of the stories they publish, but this...this is IMO is just asking for a law suit and to ruin twific for us all. This has got to be a blatent copywrite violation.

Missing Flag :-(

Thursday June 23, 2011 at 1:47 AM

So, I bought a kindle so I can read my fan fiction on the go. Sadly the Flag downloader website thingy doesn't seem to be up & running anymore.

Has anyone had any luck downloading/accessing the Flag site?

Does anyone have any suggestions of other sites that do the same thing?

Twilight Children

Wednesday June 22, 2011 at 10:48 PM

We all know what Nessie will look like, but we all have also done our own image-ideas of what we thought she'd look like.

I remember taking a picture of Kstew and Rob, blending them together and getting this girl as a result for a future child for them:

Well, it wasn't Camilla Belle exactly, but it was pretty close!

I also came across this random boy on TV as a potential child for them (or just Edward):

I loved the hair and believe this is what shade Edward's should be.

So, I guess what I am trying to get to....I would love to see pictures of the Twilight Children, and yes, I mean more than just E & B as many love to take our cast and write them in Human stories.

Offside by Savage7289

Wednesday June 22, 2011 at 5:12 AM

Hi!

If you aren't reading this fic yet, I would like to recommend it!!

When I saw that Savage was starting a new story, I was very excited. But when I saw that there was a Sportward... I don't read Sportward... and that it was in High School... I prefer older characters.

But then I decided to apply my "6 chapters rule:" before deciding about a fic, I read the first 6 chapters. Then if I'm hooked I go on, otherwise I drop it. There are fics that had me hooked after the 1st chapter, but it's not always the same.

With Soccerward and Savage's Offside, it took me 4 or 5 chapters (but they are very short!)

I've just shared my review about it:

Showing and telling in "Offside" by Savage7289

yep, the old "show, don't tell," because I think that Offside is also a great lesson on writing!!!

And since I fell in love with Soccerward, I made a blinkie for Offside, feel free to grab it!

Offside - blinkie

If you read this fic, say "Ciao" to the author from

OMG Fanfiction Changed My Life

Tuesday June 21, 2011 at 6:54 PM

Ohai.

Long time, no see, yeah? :D

So the other day as I was unpacking box #389746652 I was thinking (read: whining) about how much I missed writing and reading and hanging out on twitter and all that fun stuff. You know, participating in the fandom. I was also cursing my movers, but that's a different issue.

Anyway, that thought (read: whine) lead to another thought.

What would I have been thinking (read: whining) about had I not found fan fiction? In other words, how would my life be different? Or how has fan fiction and the fandom changed my life?

What about you?

How has fic changed your life or perceptions? What's changed since you started reading or writing? Good, bad, whatever. What about the fandom in general - how has that impacted your life?

I'll reply inside... but there's one very obvious thing fic and fandom brought to me ;D

(dude, thank YOU, RPLife, for that pic... *swoon*)

Resent!

Tuesday June 21, 2011 at 4:26 PM

I've never done this before, but here it goes . . . I've got a fic rec!

Resent by sistergrimm/dearlybeloved'93

I've been pimping this story from hell to high water because it's utterly amazing. When readers talk about wanting something original THIS is what they mean, it just doesn't get any more unique than this story. The plot will keep you guessing and gnawing on your nails with each chapter. The originality of the story and new characters is complex and interesting, but the canon favorites really FEEL canon. It's an AU/Vamp with a twist! This one's a new undiscovered gem, and it's a great time to jump on the Resent wagon with me. Just give the first chapter a try and see if you can stop.

So if you haven't heard of this story, check it out here:

On Twilighted under sistergrimm: http://twilighted.net/viewstory.php?sid=14745

On Fanfiction.net under dearlybeloved'93: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6762703/1/Resent

On TWCS under Dearlybeloved: http://www.thewriterscoffeeshop.com/library/viewstory.php?sid=4168

Basically this story centers around Tony Swan. Yeah, you've heard that right, an original character that is the offspring of Bella and Edward. And for an original character, he's definitely got a voice, and some character! Edward left Bella in New Moon, like the story goes, but in this universe Edward unknowingly knocked Bella up before he departed. Events take place after his leaving that we the readers aren't exactly sure of, but suffice to say they're intense, life-altering, and important. These events eventually leave Bella under the care of Nahuel, along with her two children. Twins. Tony and Reneseme. They're both hybrid offspring with an impressive set of gifts that are just beginning to come to light, but what we do know about them is that they grow at different rates. Tony's in his teens and Reni is still a child.

It's an interesting twist that's just beginning to blossom into some real issues and suspense. Because it's come time for Bella and her children to move to a new city, where--since she became a vamp after giving birth and is eternally 18--she has to pretend to be the sister of her children.

At the new school, which is carrying a lot more secrets between its walls than just locker room peepshows, Tony encounters the Cullens. And everything's about to change when they discover that he's no ordinary human, but not only that, he's got a serious penchant for anger. When Alice has a vision that puts them all in jeopardy all the jagged pieces of this broken mirror reflect back something that no one saw coming.

And if you have and want to talk about it with other readers, I made a Twilighted Forum for it so come on over and chit-chat about it with me! OMG someone come chat with me on the forum cause I'm a loser . . .

Twilight Forum link: http://www.twilighted.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=17048

So come in here and fangirl over this story with me, or go read it and come back and let me know what you think. And if you have read it come in here and help me convince others why this story's worth giving a try.

Tattoos

Tuesday June 21, 2011 at 11:56 AM

I've found my tattoo artist and have made the date, July 26th for my one and only. I'm very excited since this is the climax to a very long story in my life. I wanted to celebrate overcoming depression and the retaking of control of my life with a symbol that would always be with me. The actual key ideal came from FanFic! A wonderful story called Paper Cutouts by astilbe13 had one of her characters getting the key  tattoo also. Then I had to find the right image. Anyway, to make this interactive and increase my excitement please share your favourite Tattward, your own tattoo stories and please pics of them. Inside is the image of what I hope will be on my left forearm July 27th.

The Girl Who Read

Tickling Your Fancy

Tuesday June 21, 2011 at 10:40 AM

Hello!

I don't know if you've heard, but there are quite a few Twilight fanfics out there(!) And that means many different Edwards.

So I'm being nosy  and asking you this question - what is your favourite type of 'Ward? The Edward that you will always read in a fic, and love to love/hate?

Does Dilfward make you dizzy?

Historyward give you hysterics?

Do you dig Doucheward?

And for those non Edward fans, is there a particular brand of Carlisle/Jasper/Emmett/Jacob that you dig?

Mine are on the inside....

Apologies in advance for the British English here, and if 'tickling your fancy' is something terribly rude in American English (I have googled it to check.... but you never know) then I send my humble apologies. My mother uses it here in England, so it really isn't rude at all! Promise!

Boring Sex in FF

Tuesday June 21, 2011 at 7:56 AM

Hi,

I'm writing a fic in which 2 characters will eventually get together and consummate their relationship. But I'm really, really dreading it because:

1) Sex kills the tension between the characters and makes everything a foregone conclusion.
2) All the sex scenes (even in the fics I love) tend to follow the same pattern/routine. And I'm not talking about how graphic the scenes are.

I could gloss over the sex scene without any details, but that doesn't seem right either.

Any thoughts/opinions? I would love feedback from both readers and writers.

EDIT: Thanks for all the helpful comments from everyone, both writers and readers. I think I know what to do now.

I'm usually a lurker so I haven't the chance to say this before - YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING  :)

Fun with Feminism

Monday June 20, 2011 at 10:00 PM

So I've been thinking lately about something called the Bechdel Test, its applicability to fanfiction, and whether or not my stories (or my favorite stories written by others) would actually pass it.

The Bechdel Test (aka The Bechdel Movie Test or the Bechdel Rule) stipulates the following:
1. The film must include 2 or more female characters (one website in particular further requires that they be named characters)
2. The female characters must have a conversation with each other
3. Their conversation must not be about a guy (or guys)

There are arguments that passing the Bechdel test does not necessarily mean a movie is feministic or misogynistic (case in point, Twilight: Eclipse technically passes the test, even though Bella is a damsel in distress who spends the entire movie trying to chose between two guys who are vying to protect her). But the test can speak to who or what drives the action, or at least to what effort, if any, was put into making the female characters a little more well-rounded. A movie is pretty limited, I think, because there's only so much screen time alloted, and much of it has to be devoted to plot, romantic development, establishing motivation, etc. But with a printed story, we have so much more room to work with.

That got me thinking, so I checked my own stories. Of the nine Twilight stories in my profile (one of which is a 13-chapter compilation of drabbles and very short one-shots for a challenge), only six long stories and NONE of the drabbles meet all three Bechdel criteria.

So share with me your opinion of the test itself, or of Twilight's misogyny (or contrary arguments). Share a link to a story you think passes the Bechdel test. Do you have a story you desperately love that still doesn't pass the test, and why do you love it? This is a largely female fandom--should the primary female story characters interact with each other differently than they do, or is this an unfair expectation of what is meant to be escapist teen romance?

Fic recommendation

Monday June 20, 2011 at 3:29 PM

For anyone who'd like a really good AU, ExB vamp fic - or just one that's well written - I have a great recommendation:

Twelve Months by SassyKathy

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6660624/1/Twelve_Months

"Twelve months is nothing when you've spent decades walking the earth, existing, searching; twelve months is everything when your search has come to an end. One year in the life of a gentle soul and the woman who recasts his world."

Her writing is lovely: spare, elegant, and to the point, but she also creates some beautiful images. Edward is a painter, and an artist's sensibility infuses a lot of the storytelling.

It's a crime that she only has about 20 reviews; she deserves so much more. Please give it a chance and let her know what you think.

Does anyone else think that Cameron on the Glee Project is the perfect Geekward?  The glasses, the hair, those skinny, skinny jeans?  Plus, he's musical, seems quite sweet, and soft spoken.  Just what I picture when reading typical Geekward fiction!
