Stompin' Tom Connors dies at 77

Canadian country-folk legend Stompin' Tom Connors, whose toe-tapping musical spirit and fierce patriotism established him as one of Canada's strongest cultural icons, has died. He was 77.

Connors passed away Wednesday from what a spokesman described as "natural causes."

Brian Edwards said the musician, rarely seen without his signature black cowboy hat and stomping cowboy boots, knew his health was declining and had penned a message for his fans a few days before his death.

In the message posted on his website, Connors says Canada kept him "inspired with it's beauty, character, and spirit, driving me to keep marching on and devoted to sing about its people and places that make Canada the greatest country in the world."

Connors is survived by his wife Lena, two sons, two daughters and several grandchildren.
Dubbed Stompin' Tom for his propensity to pound the floor with his left foot during performances, Connors garnered a devoted following through straight-ahead country-folk tunes that drew inspiration from his extensive travels and focused on the everyman.

So, I was stalking my favorite author's ff.net site and she's never even posted there searching for recs, and ended up finding a WIP I just had to read in one sitting. This hasn't happened for so long; can't even remember when the last time was. And now I'm patiently waiting for an update, and knowing i'm not over this obsession makes me happy :)  Even if I'm hoping for major angst.

The Gap: Their first encounter is brief, minute, insignificant, forgettable. At least it should be. Edward and Bella live very different lives, but a chance encounter forces them to reexamine everything they thought they wanted.

I have some sad news to share.

Katalina Roseph passed away this morning. She was the one for whom members of the fandom wrote the SU4K compilation, raising over $13,000 for cancer research.

Her family sent this message: 

K passed this morning, peacefully, with both her husband and I [K's sister] by her side. She fought a hard fight all weekend long and we knew time was short. I believe her wish list was completed and her children were here this weekend and she was in a great place and looked beautiful in spite of all she has been through. Please pass this on to her facebook family. So sorry to bring you this sad news. She is in a beautiful place. We are as good as we can be. Our faith and family will see us through. Stay in touch. God Bless you for your wonderful friendship.

Her family has added another message: "The family would like you to know that Kathie passed away this morning after an evening spent with family. Please know that the family will likely be unable to respond to individual messages, but want to thank you all for your support and well wishes...Kathie is resting peacefully now.

If you would like to honor her memory, she wanted donations in her name to be made to the Stand Up 2 Cancer campaign (www.standup2cancer.org) in lieu of anything like flowers.

Thank you again."

'Fifty Shades' Porn Parody Countersuit Claims Books Are In Public Domain (Exclusive)

Defending against an attempt by Universal Studios to stop release of 'Fifty Shades of Grey: A XXX Adaptation,' Smash Pictures argues that the famous erotic books originally were published on fan-fiction websites.

From the article:

"On information and belief, as much as 89% of the content of the allegedly copyrighted materials grew out of a multi-part series of fan fiction called Masters of the Universe based on Stephenie Myer's (sic) Twilight novels. On information and belief, this content was published online between 2009 and 2011 in various venues, including fanfiction.net and the person website of Ericka (sic) Leonard. On information and belief, much or all of this material was placed in the public domain."

It is worth reading the entire article. (because it is a hot mess)

What are your thoughts?? There are many, many "50 Shades of..." parodies out there, what is the deal with this one? How do you make porn from porn? It is an interesting thought, even though I am sure they will lose.

"Someone at a publishing house who was also a fan of Twific approached the authors (Windchymes, Katinki, Sleepyval, Rochelle Allison, and Whatsmynom) and asked them to write original short stories for a contest. The contest featured audio recordings of the first part of each one. I'm pretty sure Windchymes won. Now the publisher has decided to go ahead and release all the short stories as an anthology."
