I'm pretty sure we've had this discussion before but I think it's been awhile?
What do you guys do when there's a book or fic you really like but then the author does something that you think is stupid? We've had a lot of examples in this fandom, everything from P2P (I understand some people support that, just using it as an example) to people faking their own deaths. But it doesn't always have to be something big. Maybe they make a comment on their Twitter or Tumblr that we don't agree with. Maybe they write a really self-serving author's note. If it's a published (original fiction) author maybe they get into an online war with a reviewer. Or maybe they say something really sexist or racist or just plain closed-minded.
This imagining only works if it's someone/something you REALLY love. So picture your favorite author or favorite book and then picture them doing something really stupid. Would you continue to read their work? Would you continue to count their writing as a favorite? Would you continue to follow them on Tumblr or Twitter or wherever?
How would you balance, in your mind, the action with the quality of writing and the joy that writing brought you? Are you able to separate the work from the artist?
Also, tangentially related, to what degree should authors censor themselves, if at all? If an author is a racist or a bigot or sexist should they try to hide that from the public? Should they be careful what they tweet and blog and Facebook? Or should they let it all hang out? Where/how do you draw the line between professionalism and free speech?
