Fanfic writer on BBC news

Monday May 27, 2013 at 8:18 PM

Anyone know this gal or her author name?

The BBC spoke to Jen West, Naomi Novik and Francesca Coppa, three fan fiction authors in New York.

Link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22630814  BBC won't give an embed code for the video.

It's always good to hear intelligent women speak of fanfic, hurrah!

The reportage touches upon the pros and cons of Amazon's new foray into fanfic-for-profit, but it is not an in-depth discussion.

IN other writing/film news:  Death Comes to Pemberley, which is basically Jane Austen fanfic, is being made into a film, with Matthew Rhys as Darcy.  http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/10081280/Matthew-Rhys-to-revive-Colin-Firths-Mr-Darcy.html

Anyone know this Mr. Rhys?  He is in an FX show called 'The Americans'.

And, finally, a 'cash-strapped' computer programmer in the UK, Seth Patrick, just got £750,000 (about $1.5million) for his debut crime novel. Woo hoo for first time novelists!   Film rights have been sold, too.  When asked who he wants to play the lead, he commented:  'My wife is keen on Robert Pattinson.'   LOL.  Me too, honey.   Link to The Sunday TImes article

It's like a crossover fanfic but not really..

Monday May 27, 2013 at 3:07 PM

Sorry for the rather vague title, but lately I'm looking for fanfics that remind you of another fandom. Maybe Edward/Bella with the rest of the gang are entered into an all-or-nothing battle of death with only one victor that reminds you vaguely of The Hunger Games. Or maybe everyone has awesome superpowers that reminds you of X-men when they band together and kick some villian butt. Or perhaps there's some Harry Potter-equse elements where the characters are in a school for the magically-gifted.

To make this interactive also, what fandoms do you also want to see Twilight make reference to in fanfiction? Personally, I'm still waiting for the day where I find a good twilight fanfiction where Edward is a demi-god (like in Percy Jackson) or a bender (like in the Last Airbender series). How about you guys?

What makes you decide if you'll read a story?

Monday May 27, 2013 at 5:08 AM

Got your attention now?

Say you see a rec, the plot seems right up your alley, and you click on the link. Then what? I always check out the authors' favorites. If she's got too many stories I don't like writing-wise (or just too manys tories) I usually don't even give it a try.

Anyone else as weird picky as me?

Good Fic Withdrawal

Sunday May 26, 2013 at 10:23 PM

Hey There

This is the first campfire I've ever posted and I'm hoping it's still FFA.

I'm looking for some really good fics to read. I'm not afraid of some angst and I don't mind a good vamp fic. I am over high school fics though. I want to read real grown up stories. I don't want the insta-love. Some of my favourite recent fics are Honest Liar, Cracks in the Pavement, Pocket Change for example.

So hit me with some of your faves. I can be a fussy b*tch so don't be offended.

Bored!

Sunday May 26, 2013 at 3:54 AM

I am sick to the back teeth of all this stupid 'Robsten' drama. Frankly, I couldn't care less. I love this site, and I loved it when we had...just really off topic campfires. So here we go.

I'm really bored. I have one more exam of the year (cause I ain't doing any resits!) but it's quite difficult to revise for (purely because I know everything for this one - not often I can say that). So instead I find myself doing a few hours of revision then I spend the rest of the day on my many, many hobbies.

Like many people, I make blogs for my hobbies. But I want to follow more blogs!

So please, please, come in share the websites/blogs/tumblrs you run, so that I can follow you and fuel my free time reading :)

I'll post mine inside.

Also, even if you don't own a blog, do you follow any? Recommend any?

Imma Gonna Say Something

Saturday May 25, 2013 at 12:10 PM

Lately, there's been more and more hate toward Kristen Stewart than usual it seems. I'm not gonna lie, I don't really care for her acting all that much. I used to love her - but for whatever reason I find myself tired of the attitude and drama.

Now, does that mean I have the right to insult her and call her names? I don't feel so. Do I feel that calling her friends names and such is wrong and just hurtful? Yes.

Look, people are gonna feel the way they feel about her. I get it, she causes reactions in people. Good and bad. But to be quite honest, I'm getting sick of the self-entitlement people seem to have when it comes to insulting her and her friends. Some even insult Rob for being with her at all.

I write all of this because I feel there needs to be a serious discussion about why people do this and why it's really not okay (imo). These are real people with real lives. They no doubt have feelings and I'm sure as tough as they try to act in public, there's gotta be some tears in private.

So have at it. Tell me what you love about Kristen. Tell me what you hate about her. Tell me why it is or it is not okay to behave as if she is a sheep deaf to the things people call her. But keep it mature, people.

What the Fic?! 5/25

An author deserving our love

Saturday May 25, 2013 at 8:16 AM

I don't know if, being FFA, What the Fic will be posted today. However I think this deserves its own campfire. Glasscannon.lj today posted chapter 23rd of her story No Choice. The previous one was posted in 2011. The author, in a long author's note, explains why. She has a terrible disease that makes typing (and other things too) excruciatingly painful. Still, she intends to continue till the end of the story, if she manages it. I suppose writing gives her joy in a life that is very, very difficult. She is brave and I am awed by her determination. Please, read what she wrote about her situation (the chapter follows the note) and then read her fic and send her some love with a review.(she is also on twitter).

No Choice is a vamp story and I had it still on alert. I am so glad that I did.

Summary: New Moon AU. During Bella’s run in with Laurent, what if the wolves
had shown up just a few minutes later? Those minutes change Bella's life
forever, and she must learn to deal with the consequences. Nominated for two
Twific Indie Awards.

All in.....

Friday May 24, 2013 at 4:36 PM

Good afternoon, ladies and gents. ;)

So i finally finished tech school, and wouldn't you know it,  just in time for the memorial day free for all :D.

I've been having a very productive couple of weeks, been having fun, and....well long story short, I've been talking to this guy from back home for  little more than a month now (after the whole thing with security forces guy happened) . He picked me up from the airport yesterday, had a great time catching up. He's taking me out on a date Saturday--he actually asked me out when I was still in Texas...My first official one...l can't really count the meals I had with security forces guy as dates. Not when we were in ABU's and just at the local pizza parlor....

Anyway....we sort of have a history. Lets call him churchboy. See, churchboy and I knew each other from the AF DEP (delayed entry program). Basically, anyone who's in DEP is waiting for an AF contract/leave date for boot camp. He ended up getting discharged back in november of last year (special forces. It's pretty rough. the washout rate is like 75%).

He ran PT when we were all in DEP, but me and him were the only ones who always showed up. He was kind of the religious guru of the group, hence the name church boy, and we used to spend so much time talking after pt about a lot of crap. I enjoyed his company... He was a natural leader, wicked smart, down to earth...and would have made an outstanding Airman. I had a lot of respect for him. I still do...

I had a huge crush on him, but I didn't think he was interested. So i never put myself out there during our talks. Also, I used to think he was extremely restrained when it came to being intimate with someone since he was soo into religion at the time..., which wouldn't have really worked out for me...

Now fast forward a bit: we start talking a couple of weeks ago. and he admits to me that he liked me back in the day. :) He jut didn't say anything because he was afraid he might get us both in trouble since he was kind of in a position of power, and that I probabaly wasn't interested in him that way.  So the attraction was and is mutual. Apparently I made PT somewhat difficult for him...;D In the resulting texts between us, I've learned this: churchboy has a sexy side :D

Now where is this leading, you my ask? Well.... I like him a lot. DOn't judge please. t's just...I'm seriously considering him being my first. Yes, you read correctly. I know, I'm on leave and I'm not going to be home longterm, but...I really like him....

I'm...curious. Waiting for the perfect "one",  is a very nice fantasy...but I've learned certain things about myself while on my own, and one of them is that I don't really want to close myself off like that.... and the only reason I was ever hesitant about those sort of thoughts before was because of my familys influnce. Being away from them has allowed me to be free to test what kind of person I am. Am I saying I want to be a floozy? No. At it's heart, my parents taught me to wait for someone special, and the thing is, HE is.

So tell me....what made you decide to give up your v card? How long into the relationship before it happened, and do you regret it?

Birthday Girl

Friday May 24, 2013 at 2:21 PM

I live in the future, so days arrive early here.

And today, here, it's my beautiful friend BelieveItOrNot's birthday.

You may have read her wonderful stories, and met her beautiful characters.

And if you know her, you know that not only is she one of the most talented writers around, but she's also one of the sweetest souls on the planet.

She's always got a kind word of encouragement, she's clever, she's beautiful, and she's one of the most amazing people I know.

So come inside and wish BelieveItOrNot a Happy Birthday!

Leave her some Johnny - or some Rob or some RDJ ;)

And check out the story we wrote for her.

anything

Through MONDAY NIGHT, MAY 27th at 6PM EASTERN

Which means...

remembering to keep it PG on the FRONT PAGE

It's also like an unofficial summer kick-off here in the States. Wherever you are, do you have special plans for the upcoming months? Big vacations? Studying abroad? Babies coming?

Here, I've got a family reunion in June so I'll be traveling a little and staying in a cabin in West Virginia.  :)  Ziplining has been mentioned.

Anyone want to organize Home Movie Night for later this summer? :)
