The Weight of Words...

Wednesday November 27, 2013 at 4:00 AM

"The Weight of Words" by georgeygirl is available on Amazon... (author's name is Georgina Guthrie)

Aubrey Price is in the final months of her undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto. Bright, witty, and fiercely independent, Aubrey works part-time for the college dean and has her sights set on graduating with distinction. When she meets Dean Grant's son, Daniel, the TA in her senior Shakespearean studies course, a shared love of the Bard's works and an instant mutual attraction draw Aubrey and Daniel together. Unfortunately, a strict anti-fraternizing policy--made more perilous by a black mark on Daniel's record--keeps them apart.

Against this academic backdrop, Aubrey and Daniel navigate their way through a steamy courtship, their forbidden romance aided, abetted, and sometimes thwarted by a colorful cast of friends, family, and classmates.

I have no idea how this compares with the fic, plot-wise... The complete fic was made up of The Weight of Words, The Tongue Set Free, The Swan Files and Words Escaped Me.

Bella is finishing her undergraduate English degree at U of T. PhD candidate Edward is her new TA. Shakespeare brings them together while a strict anti-fraternizing policy keeps them apart.

The semester is over. What's next for Sailor and Poppet? This is the sequel to The Weight of Words. Rated M for the three L's: loooove, language and literature.

Edward Cullen, University of Toronto TA, starts the semester documenting the details of his banal meetings with Isabella Swan. But what starts as a "CYA" exercise, soon becomes the outpourings of a man falling in love.

This was/is very well written and remains one of my favorite AH.

Oldies but goodies

Tuesday November 26, 2013 at 2:46 PM

Poor Jackson Rathbone.  Those wigs, sigh.

I've been on a fic reading spree of late, but I've only been reading the "oldies" that I somehow missed the first time around.  Maybe it's the time of year -- I first discovered Twilight a week before Thanksgiving in 2008.

Anyway, I just started reading Trial by Fire by AnEnduringHope and I'm LOVING it so far.  OMG, it's so good, I don't know how I missed it in 2010.  Maybe because it focuses mainly on Jasper and I was always Edward-centric.

But it always makes me a little sad to read a fic "alone," after it's complete and everyone has quit discussing it.  Bwahhh!!!  For instance, I just finished Morning Star by Consultant By Day.  The story and the writing were compelling and I finished it, but the whole time I was reading it I wanted to b*tch-slap both Bella AND Edward.  Edward ... well, see, that's why I wish I could have discussed it with someone as I read it!  Was he more controlling than book Edward, or did I perceive him that way because I'm 5 years into the fandom and my perspective has changed?

But I digress ... Fellow campers, do you ever go back and try to read hidden gems you missed when they were initially written?  Do you think your opinion of them is influenced by how you, the fandom, or fanfic has evolved?

More importantly, what oldie should I read next?!

(Naturally, I'm rec'ing Trial by Fire, linked above -- and I just realized it's a sequel and I haven't read the first story!).

Sequel to Journey Through the Flames. "A single moment can take a life and alter it wholly and irrevocably… casting us from the highest point of happiness to the lowest pits of despair... one single moment is all it takes to change everything."

Fic Diving 11-26-13

Diving Deep for Fan Fic Treasures

Found a few gems this week.

Hope everyone in the US has a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Let me know what you love or...don't love. (Never want to say "hate")  I appreciate your feedback!

Don't forget your three R's!
Read, Review and Recommend!

Rest My Soul by MrsSpaceCowboy

On opposite corners of Third Street and Beale, two lonely people fight to stay that way. Her scars are on the surface, soft on her skin and in her eyes. His run bone-deep, seeped in bourbon and blues. EPOV.

I adore this story. Firefighter Edward.  Both are fighting the attraction to each other.  Can't wait to see more!

The Friend Zone by sunflowersongs
Edward has loved his best friend Emmett's sister for years, but he thinks Bella has only seen him as a friend. Could one revealing night change everything?

Quick. Fluff. Lemony.

The Best Mistake of All by MrsK81

Living the perfect life with no cares or responsibilities suited Bella just fine, but her family had other ideas and all of a sudden everything was changing... and not necessarily in a good way. One last night out, one quick escape through a bathroom window, one assumption about her new boss plus so many other things proved to be one mistake after another or so it seemed.

Spoiled rich girl has an ONS with her new boss. Can she cut it in her new workplace?

Dying To Heal by Minerva77
With a haunting past and a heart filled with fear, Bella had reached the end of her rope, "It was a moment of desperation. A moment of seeking after a drastic change, even if that meant dying for the sake of healing." It was while staring in the face of death, Bella discovers, not all angels have wings. When earth collides with heaven, truth emerges, and freedom is sure to follow.

Serious angst warning here. Deals with difficult topics, i.e. suicide, drugs, and more.

FLASH BACK FIC DIVE:

Little Fish, Big Fish by Michelle M Marie & Paige Parkker
Follows the life of Bella and Edward as they meet in high school, eventually parting painfully, only to reunite as adults – in very different circumstances. EPOV.A/H OOC

I never thought this story would complete!  But, after a long wait, they finished it up.  Extremely OOC.  Bella is a complete stoner/hippie.  Edward is a manwhore.

Sexy Silk by jlho
Bella is a smart mouthed, celebrity hating P.A. to a Hollywood Stylist. Edward is an arrogant Hollywood playboy. What happens when their paths cross on the night of the Globes? Rated M for swears and lemons.

This is not marked complete, but is complete for all intents and purposes.  An epi was mentioned, but never added.  I don't know that the story needs it.  Funny, snarky Bella.  Edward charms her pants off.  Literally.

The Selkie Wife by Lissa Bryan
Set during the reign of "Bloody Mary" Tudor. Bella is captured by Edward to raise his daughter. He promises to release her one day, but will he? Court intrigues and danger around every corner. Can they, and their new-found love, survive? Rated M/OOC/AU

I added this at the last minute because she has just started posting the sequel. Everyone should read this story! Not only because of the ExB storyline, but because her research and accurate portrayal of how things were done in this era is unbelievable.  I learned more about this historic period from this story than I ever did in school, and enjoyed it!  On this Thanksgiving week, I am thankful that I was born in the 1970's and not 1570's!

Thanks for your support and feedback!

i will be doing a few exchange campfires this week. stay tuned, and click the "holiday exchange" tag if you think you missed them. look forward to a candy/baked goods exchange as well as the holiday freecycle.

so, let's get this going. give and/or receive holiday cards with campers from around the world!

-post a comment if you are willing to send cards to people

-include how many cards you're willing to send and whether you'll ship internationally

-do not post your address (email or physical) anywhere on ADF. stay internet safe! keep those things to private messages, please.

-if you are unwilling to give total strangers your address, maybe you can just send cards and make someone's day!

-you can ask to exchange cards or only send them or only receive them. it's up to you!

-if you say you're gonna send something, do it. don't be a bozo!

-enjoy, darlings! don't forget, freeforall for another week!

Let's Get Technical, Technical!

Saturday November 23, 2013 at 10:54 AM

Technical Support, that is.

I am having problems!!

I'm trying to update my Samsung S2 phone to the Jellybean ...program? Software?

See how hopeless I am?

Let us use this campfire to ask for others experiences and knowledge on any problems we're having with technology!

Need help with your Kindle? Nook? Iphone? Anything?

Come post inside and perhaps if we're lucky someone will have gone through the same thing and have some advice!

If you're not in need of any advice, and don't have any to give, come inside and tell me what program/game/app/phone/tablet/etc/etc you really love and would recommend to others!

What apps should I be using?

If I have to buy another phone, eventually, what phone would you recommend?

i like tags.
