Midnight Showing vs. 8 PM Showing

Saturday November 16, 2013 at 3:12 PM

My sister just had the audacity to suggest we switch our Catching Fire Midnight Showing tickets to an earlier showing on Thursday night.

“So you’d really rather stick to the midnight showing, even though it’s more convenient for everyone else in our group to go at 8 pm and we’ll get to see the movie sooner?” she asked when my answer was a resounding HECK NO!

That led to a five-minute rant on the sanctity of Midnight Showings and how movie studios are destroying it. In my opinion:

A Midnight Showing is about the experience as much as the movie. It’s about diehard fans who love something so much they are willing to stay up to ungodly hours to enjoy it together. I know this doesn’t happen at all movie theaters, but here in Colorado Springs we have people who sleep out for several nights to be first in line, costume contests for those who get dressed up, we even had a travelling band for HPDH2 that went around making up impromptu songs based on HP buzz words. Best of all, we talk. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never met the person sitting next to you, there’s always that shared anticipation that comes with the countdown to midnight. I love that.

I feel movie studios are doing a disservice to their fan-bases by allowing 8 pm showings. If you want to go to an 8 pm showing, why not just go Friday night? However, it seems more and more likely 8 PM showings are here to stay.

Is there anyone out there who feels as I do about Midnight Showings or do I need to take a chill pill because you like this new shift? I won't judge you! Do you attend a movie theater with a similar zeal as mine or is yours boring normal? How do you think this will change our fan culture?

P.S. This was written by a fangirl who always thought she'd meet her future spouse at a midnight showing. Forgive me.

P.P.S. Don't even get me started on movie studios that include 8 pm ticket sales in their weekend box office figures. That is cheating.

Self-Publishing

Saturday November 16, 2013 at 1:24 PM

Hello! It's been awhile since I posted anything, but I wanted to get some feedback. I recently self-published my first original story. I was wondering if any of you ever self-published. What methods did you use to promote your book? Would you say book sales met your expectations? Would you do it again? Did you use a professional editor? (I used Write Divas and had a great experience with them.) I also thought we could use this campfire to promote our original work whether it's something you self-published, or something you posted on fictionpress or someplace similiar.

Also, from a reader's perspective, have you ever read an indie book? Is there a particular author that you really enjoy reading? Share your thoughts inside!

Snacks and appetizers

Saturday November 16, 2013 at 12:01 PM

Okay, I'm going to be totally honest with you. I'm not a very social person, outside of my close-knit group of friends. I don't like parties, baby showers, wedding showers, cocktail hours, etc.

But one thing I do like? Food! Specifically, snacks and appetizers. So I will suffer through the parties and showers just so I can load my little color-coordinated-with-the-decorations paper plate up with some dips, wieners, pinwheels, and meatballs.

Two years ago my BFF planned a big birthday party for me, and the theme of the party was "dips". 15 people brought all kinds of dips- sweet, spicy, savory....you name it, we had a dip for it. It was the BEST BIRTHDAY of my LIFE!!! I don't think it can ever be topped. Unless she wants to plan a steak party for me...

So today we're asking for your favorite appetizer recipes. I've got to go get ready for my son's birthday dinner (which, sadly, is at a restaurant and does not include any dips) but I'll be back to post my favorite app recipes later tonight.

Weekly Football

Saturday November 16, 2013 at 8:49 AM

Well, college football is winding down and I'm distraught. We've got two games left.

I think I've used this gif before, but it perfectly sums up WVU's loss to Texas in overtime last week.

I get by with a little help...

Friday November 15, 2013 at 9:36 AM

I would love to see this go viral.

This is a local Connecticut girls brain child, it was filmed at Children's Medical Center and features kids with cancer... talk about inspiring and a tear jerker.  Watch and like if you find it in your heart to make this little girls dream of awareness come true.

Morgan Platt is the embodiment of courage.

After being diagnosed with a brain tumor in June 2011, the 10-year-old Avon, Conn., girl decided to fight back and inspire others along her journey.

During an appointment at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, she decided to make a music video, using Katy Perry’s “Roar."

Morgan and mom, Kathy, managed to get nurses, physicians, other patients and parents involved and you just have to see the results.

Morgan hopes the video will go viral and raise awareness about her condition and the other types of cancers being treated at the local hospital.

“It’s these little bursts of greatness for these kids that keep them going. I’m so proud of Morgan. She’s defying the odds!,” Kathy Platt said.

Hole In The Wall Gang, a New Haven based non-profit that actor Paul Newman founded in 1988, helped shoot and edit the video.

freeforall weekend until sunday night

clickfeed an adtree!

so, hullo, gents. a few notes:

-the freeforall lasts from midnight eastern thursday night until 6pm eastern sunday evening.

-no permission needed to post anything at all during this time- but please, refrain from nuding the front page (meaning the "add campfire" part). also, no foul language. save all that shizz for euphemisms and the comments. (why? you might ask. well, darling- because it keeps the casual observer from coming here and being all OH DEAR SWEET FIRTH WHAT HORROR HATH THOU WROUGHT. by going inside the campfire, you've already clicked the registration agreement that you're going to see that stuff and therefore cannot complain. well, i mean, you can always complain, but you can't say you weren't warned.)

-holiday freecycle coming up- i've decided to do a separate candy/baked goods exchange and will make the intial post thanksgiving week (i have ellinor to thank for that, it'll be tidier to have two separate posts for it). if you don't know what a freecycle is, click the "freecycle" tag at the bottom of this post and check out some of our previous freecycles!

-let's all take the time to thank the weekly posts here on ADF, eh? the people doing them rarely miss, and they're all working hard to come up with interesting things to discuss each week. thank you, boy-os!

-my husband is watching the parent trap of his own volition at the moment. the lindsey lohan one.

so, ITP: discuss marines who love 90s tween movies, talk about thor and/or catching fire (but istg if you post any spoilers i will find you and ruin every book you've never read), but above all, please thank your weekly post people.
