banners make me drool

Thursday January 28, 2010 at 2:21 PM

some like soft hands, other likes big lips. I have a thing for banners.

and no, nothing sexual. banner as in banners for a fanfiction.

I am not a big fan of Master of the Universe. And I haven't read To Be Stabbed in the Front (even though I know I should) - but what these two have in common is that they each have a banner, which I drool over every time I see it.

And if I knew how to, I would post my fav banners which I have on my computer, but since I'm too stupid, I tell you:

The Hydraulic Level 5-banner - because everything related to HL5 makes me want to weep - and the Sanctuary banners with Robert Pattinson in the front, looking all hot and staring right into the camera. Me salivate.

So, tell me, ladies. What's your favourite banner?

Websites I am Grateful for

Thursday January 28, 2010 at 2:17 PM

Yes, I know my title has a hanging preposition. It annoys me, too.

So, firstly and mostly, is ADF. Love you guys. I am also grateful for Thesaurus.com, which I keep open while I'm writing (I don't have Office Word, just stinky Wordpad). I am also grateful for Wikipedia, which tells me all the trees and shrubs of Washington and makes me sound like I've been there.

What are your favorite Websites? (yes, I'm fishing for fun and useful websites). Do you have any writerly websites that you hit up? The Writer's Craft comes to mind. Or anything just plain silly?

Where else do you go besides ADF?

Best Kiss

Thursday January 28, 2010 at 1:55 PM

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart's kiss in Twilight has been voted one of the best kisses of the last decade.

The tender moment, which occurred in the first film in the vampire saga, came fourth in the survey.

Madonna and Britney Spears'infamous lesbian kiss at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2003 topped the poll conducted by department store Selfridges.

A source described the kiss as “one of the most memorable moments ever”.

"Madonna performing with both Britney and Christina was a big enough event in itself, but nobody - even the MTV people - expected what happened,” they added.

Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst were second for their romantic embrace in Spider-Man, while Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal's kiss in Brokeback Mountain came fourth.

The top-five was completed by Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz for their kiss in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

The survey was conducted by Selfridges ahead of the opening of its kissing booth at its flagship store in London next month.

R.I.P. J.D. Salinger

Thursday January 28, 2010 at 11:30 AM

One of my favorite quotes from "Catcher in the Rye" is "Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody."  I am very sad that this incredible, complicated author is gone. He inspired me more than he could ever know.

Discuss people that have inspired you.

NEW YORK -- J.D. Salinger, the legendary author, youth hero and fugitive from fame whose "The Catcher in the Rye" shocked and inspired a world he increasingly shunned, has died. He was 91.

Salinger died of natural causes at his home on Wednesday, the author's son said in a statement from Salinger's literary representative. He had lived for decades in self-imposed isolation in the small, remote house in Cornish, N.H.

"The Catcher in the Rye," with its immortal teenage protagonist, the twisted, rebellious Holden Caulfield, came out in 1951, a time of anxious, Cold War conformity and the dawn of modern adolescence. The Book-of-the-Month Club, which made "Catcher" a featured selection, advised that for "anyone who has ever brought up a son" the novel will be "a source of wonder and delight - and concern."

Enraged by all the "phonies" who make "me so depressed I go crazy," Holden soon became American literature's most famous anti-hero since Huckleberry Finn. The novel's sales are astonishing - more than 60 million copies worldwide - and its impact incalculable. Decades after publication, the book remains a defining expression of that most American of dreams - to never grow up.

Salinger was writing for adults, but teenagers from all over identified with the novel's themes of alienation, innocence and fantasy, not to mention the luck of having the last word. "Catcher" presents the world as an ever-so-unfair struggle between the goodness of young people and the corruption of elders, a message that only intensified with the oncoming generation gap.

Novels from Evan Hunter's "The Blackboard Jungle" to Curtis Sittenfeld's "Prep," movies from "Rebel Without a Cause" to "The Breakfast Club," and countless rock 'n' roll songs echoed Salinger's message of kids under siege. One of the great anti-heroes of the 1960s, Benjamin Braddock of "The Graduate," was but a blander version of Salinger's narrator.

The cult of "Catcher" turned tragic in 1980 when crazed Beatles fan Mark David Chapman shot and killed John Lennon, citing Salinger's novel as an inspiration and stating that "this extraordinary book holds many answers."

By the 21st century, Holden himself seemed relatively mild, but Salinger's book remained a standard in school curriculums and was discussed on countless Web sites and a fan page on Facebook.

Salinger's other books don't equal the influence or sales of "Catcher," but they are still read, again and again, with great affection and intensity.

iPad

Thursday January 28, 2010 at 10:13 AM

Umm. Yeah.  So... Anybody heard of Apple's latest bit of tech?

Just in case you've missed the buzz - Apple has come out with a tablet.

It is meant to compete with Kindle and the Sony Reader.

It is called the iPad.

So what I want to know is...

Do any of you guys use the readers or do you prefer good old fashioned books?

I use my iTouch all the time to read ADF and fic, does anyone else? Or is the tiny screen too big a pain in the ass?

Are you willing to fork over the mullah for the newest Apple gadget?

And, finally, does anyone else ROFL @ the name iPad?

wtvoc approved this message.

edit: oh, and btw, that sketch was on Madtv in 2006 - they were way before their time.

Speaking of Daddy C...

Thursday January 28, 2010 at 9:55 AM

I am re-listening (cauz I have the audiobooks) to NM and it reminded me of my biggest beef with NM the movie:  the scene in which Carlisle is stitching up Bella and he says he does not believe that vamps have any soul.  I think that detail is part of the essential characterization of Carlisle.  Did that bother anyone else?  Did anyone else notice?

2nd beef would be that RP really needs to articulate more to be Edward, but I can overlook a lot for that pretty face : )

Let's Play a Game

Thursday January 28, 2010 at 8:33 AM

I wonder what the Cullens would be like throughout the decades.

So let's play a game.

I want pictures of music they'd listen to, outfits they wear, movies they'd attend. What news story would Carlisle write to the editor about? What would their kitchen look like? What godawful cars would they drive?

In order to survive, vampires need to adapt seamlessly- no matter how ridiculous they feel.

We'll start with the best decade ever- THE SEVENTIES

Edward would listen to this in anticipation of Bella:

Here's Carlisle in his kitchen:

Democrat, Republican, or Independent?

Wednesday January 27, 2010 at 9:06 PM

I was watching the State of the Union and I was wondering if the Cullens would be Democrats, Republicans or Independents.

IMO Alice, Edward and Emmett would be Democrats

Rosalie, Esme and Jasper would be Republicans and Carlisle would be Independent.

What do you think?

Rebel Without a Cause and Every October

Wednesday January 27, 2010 at 8:05 PM

Hello everyone, I'm MissAlex (profile link: http://www.fanfiction.net/~missalex). I am, a twilight fan fiction writer and ADF Lurker. I saw the "Self-Pimpage" post/opportunity and figured why the heck not? I hope I'm doing this right - I've never posted here before so I hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes. Okay, so here it goes:

I write two Twilight fan fiction stories. The first one is "Rebel Without A Cause."

Summary: Rising 1950s movie starlet, Isabella Swan, is taking Hollywood by storm. But what happens when Bella meets Edward Cullen, a hot, young, rebel, Method actor from New York City, who is brought out to Los Angeles to star in his first film? AU/AH. Rated M.

The link is:  http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4912876/1/Rebel_Without_A_Cause

Edward is based on James Dean. YUM! Need I say more? So stop over and check out DeanWard :)

The SECOND story I write is a collaboration with the wonderful writer and my amazing friend Larin20 (she writes the fabulous fic Treading Water) and it's called "Every October." I write Edward, she writes Bella.

Summary: The prophecy cast: "She will be born for you." Years of observance turned into love and vampire Edward Cullen could not stay away any longer. Now she needs his protection. How can Edward deny his fate when he is the only one that can keep her safe? Rated M. AU.

A wonderful camper (and fellow BFFFer) Punkfarie has posted the banners for my two stories in the comments section and wolvesnvamps (who was very welcoming) has posted the banners in my post because I had no idea how to do it myself :) Thank you both!

Reviews are very much appreciated. Thank you so much for your support and a big thank you to ADF for allowing me to post :)
