Movie Muse?

Thursday August 19, 2010 at 8:00 AM

So we're all here for Twilight, right? Right?

Well of course the fanfiction is based off of this movie (book). But I want to know about any OTHER movies that are incorporated into the Twilight fandom/fanfiction.

So let me know if you've read or you've written any fanfiction that was inspired by a movie other than Twilight. Or maybe even a TV show? Were these stories inspired by or do they actually include characters from these other types of media? Is it a crossover? What do you think? Oh and don't forget to link us up!

Mine is in the comments.

COMPLETED Fics - AH

Thursday August 19, 2010 at 5:19 AM

First, thanks so much for your participation in the creation of MORE THAN TWENTY (20) recommendation lists!  Wow!  According to the requests y'all have made, we're not done yet!

But I want to make a list of fics that ARE. :)

Today, I am asking for COMPLETED multi-chapter stories that are ALL-HUMAN.  Just the AH today, people. If you have AU fics (completed stories with an element of the supernatural -- vamps, wolves, etc ) I ask you to post them in last week's COMPLETED AU fic list.

All ratings, all pairings!  Fluff or heartfail, smutty or pristine, I ask you to bring your favorites to recommend to people who will ONLY read completed stories.

Looking for the rest of the lists? I ask you to check out the MASTER FIC LIST for a boat-load of fics.  People are still asking for new types of recommendations, so the Future Lists List is still growing!  I encourage you to check out the Master Fic List for amazing fics to rec and for amazing fics to read!

Here around this campfire though, I just want your favorite completed AH stories.  My own recs will be within, as always.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing your faves around the fire!

It's a quarter after one...

Thursday August 19, 2010 at 12:48 AM

I'm a little drunk, and I need you now!

Yes, ladies and gentleman, I am having a late night/early morning COUNTRY JAM SESSION all by my lonesome. I wish everyone had no life like me so we could jam together. ;p

BUT. I didn't come here to find jam friends (even though that'd be nice).

What I'm looking for is Hick Fics. Or Cowboy Fics. Hillbilly Fics? YES, PLEASE.

I WANT COUNTRYWARD OR COWSPER OR FARMETT.

Please, for the love of God, put me out of my misery!

Thanks!

Fic as Literature?

Wednesday August 18, 2010 at 8:56 PM

Okay, I've hardly ever started a campfire, but I've been thinking of this topic for quite a while and wondered about other readers' viewpoints.

Is fanfic a legitimate form of literature? As in, can it count as being "literary" in the traditional sense (copyright nonsense aside, we're talking quality)?

I read tons of fic, but I also read tons of books. I have always loved books, and I still love books...I just also love fic. The problem is that fic has become more interesting to me than books.

I just finished reading "Water for Elephants", both because it has a Twi connection (pathetic, I know), and because it's been in my pile for about two years and I happened to get to it. It was good. I liked the story, I liked the main character, but I found myself wishing that it had been written by one of maybe ten fic authors I know because they could do it better.

Is that just sad? I mean, WfE has won awards and is fairly well-written, but I have become super critical of any author now because I have seen so much excellent writing in the world of fic.

Spoilers for WfE if you don't want to know:

The relationship between Jacob and Marlena seemed rushed, forced, and lacking chemistry (it was all there, but their connection was not strong enough to merit Jacob's reactions, or rather it was not written in a strong enough way). There were pretty gross descriptions of the stripper and the dwarf's...assets...but they seemed just stuck there for shock value and not handled in a great way.

There are lots of other things I could comment on with WfE, and that is just one example of traditional fiction I've read lately that makes me pause and think of fanfic.

Am I crazy? I don't know, maybe. I wondered whether I only think that fic is more intriguing because Edward and Bella are always in them, but then I remembered that a really great story always makes me believe that the author could easily publish that story without E/B or any Twi mention and still have a great story that I would gladly read.

Is the definition of storytelling changing? Has the publishing industry, critics, and media's power to "decide" what people like buried the concept of placing good stories on shelves? Do we become addicted to fic because there are some really, really great stories out there amongst all that crap?

I don't know. You tell me.

Let's play a game

Wednesday August 18, 2010 at 7:13 PM

A while ago we played a game where we mention a fic (I'm trying to remember who started it help?) and then we put down whatever word came to mind, let's play it again but in reverse. This time we'll say a word and people will tell us what fic comes to mind with that particular word. I'll start with the first word in the comments.

Age Of Edward 2010

Wednesday August 18, 2010 at 4:01 PM

The Age of Edward 2010

Chances are you remember this contest from the summer of 2009. It was a great success, giving authors old and new a chance to participate in a wholly unique sort of oneshot contest: writing an Edward from a particular historical era.

This year the contest commenced on August 15th and will run until September 30th, at which point all entries must be submitted.

Winners will be announced October 15, 2010.

There are two categories: young adult and literotica (for those who don’t write smut and for those who do). Also, canon will be included this time, albeit judged separately from the AH entries.

More info, visit
www.ageofedward.com and check out the 2010 Criteria page.

Meet the judges at:

Nerdward? Geekward? Awkward?

Wednesday August 18, 2010 at 3:43 PM

Would love some recs with the following ^^

Make it BxE (obviously), rated M, and nothing that hasn't been updated in forever- only fics that are completed, or updated regularly. I hate getting recs to stories that haven't updated since last year.

Thanks!

Bastard Out of Forks

Wednesday August 18, 2010 at 2:08 PM

Photobucket

A/N: This is a story that keeps speaking to me, keeps needing to be told and I finally feel I am at a place I can write it AND my other canon stories. This is a powerful story of Bella Swan Black, and her journey to find out where she came from and where she belongs. In the process she finds out a lot about herself and missed opportunities and lucky stars. AH/OOC, romantic and angsty.

Why Kristen Flips off the Paps

Wednesday August 18, 2010 at 10:25 AM

A timely reminder of exactly how scary and infuriating it can be for R & K to just walk through an airport, and how what we see in a split-second paparazzi shot simply doesn't tell the whole story.  Ever.

You know, I really think they could alleviate a lot of this if they would just come out and say something about their relationship.   I am the first person to stand up and say that Rob and Kristen don't owe us a flippin' thing of their personal lives, but I really believe that if they just put out a press release that basically says "Yeah -- we're dating, so you can all back the f*ck off," the price on "compromising" photos of them would go way down and the pap feeding frenzy would die off considerably.  Since they have chosen, or been told, not to say anything, Kristen needs to do some deep breathing and try to come to some kind of peace with all the insanity going on around them.  Flipping off the paparazzi is just infantile and only hurts her because fans don't see how the paps behaved; they just see what looks like her giving them the one-finger-salute.  And the internet is forever

The TwiSlash Awards

Wednesday August 18, 2010 at 9:26 AM

Once upon a time there was a group of fans with a vision…

…a wish…

…and a dream.

That dream was an awards community dedicated purely to the slashy couples in the Twilight Saga. The pairings that weren't getting enough love because they were always downplayed by the more popular hetero pairings in the series. This group of fans wanted a place where slash fanfiction could shine and grow, a place where the jakeward wouldn't lose because of Edward's love for Bella, a place where Alice and Bella could reign supreme as more than sisters, but lovers.

So after a push, and a shove, and one hell of a big sigh we created The TwiSlash Awards for your reading, nominating, and voting pleasure! Spread the love and take a bite of our apple!

Nominations are closed, but we have a really great reading list of nominees for our voting round which officially begins on September 14th. I encourage all twislash fans to check out The TwiSlash Awards @ livejournal.

To keep this campfire interactive lets all name off our favorite Twilight Slash fanfiction. Make sure to include links as well because this camper is looking for some new fanfiction to read. :)

Femmeslash Fics

Wednesday August 18, 2010 at 5:52 AM

Happy Hump Day, Campers!

It's Wednesday and that makes it the HUMP of the work week... Finish today and the rest of the week should slide down easier...

Oh, I did a quick Google Image search for "happy hump day" and this was one of the, erm, more family-friendly images I found so I thought I'd put it here:

cycling

I had a request on the MASTER FIC LIST for a femmeslash campfire because this is a category that does get overlooked in the general stream of slash fics.  This is not a category with which I am familiar, (ETA: I just remembered one that includes femmeslash so I linked it!) so I will once again leave it to YOU, amazing CAMPERS OF ADF, to share the best of femmeslash with the Forest!

AH and AU, it's all good.  If you have a story with some girl-on-girl slash, share it with the class! ;-)

Remember to check the MASTER FIC LIST if you are looking for ANY good fics to rec to readers!  I update that list with the new links all the time and I check it every day.  We now have twenty-three categories of fan fiction listed there...and there are more to come!

Thanks for sharing your favorite femmeslash fics around the fire!

The Mouth

Wednesday August 18, 2010 at 5:13 AM

After discussing how we'd love to run our hands through the amazing tangles that make up Robert Pattinson's hair - preferably when in the midst of a heated kiss (cue swoon) - and his perfect scruff-covered jaw... let's talk about those lucious lips.

Do you like them smiling, talking, making suggestive motions, occupied with fingers/cigarettes/coke bottles... What do you like about them?

As always, a selection is in the comments.

The rules of the game

Wednesday August 18, 2010 at 5:06 AM

Help, help, I have discovered that there is fanfiction here and I started reading and commenting. It seems, though, that authors cannot answer reviews. Is it really so? There goes any motivation to review, unless you are a masochist. Please tell me.

I tried to ask some ranger, suggesting that this has to change, but how the hell does one contact them? The icons are not movong or leading anywhere. What does it mean "page us"? how?

And, finally, how does one ask to be alerted if one of the stories has a new chapter posted? Very frustrating

Bring. It. On.

So, most author's should be familiar with the infamous

ANONYMOUS FLAME

I just received my first one today! It said something along the lines of, "Well, this was a waste of a few minutes."

I don't care if people flame me. Go hard. I'm going to keep writing regardless.

But, sometimes the things they say just make me go, "Um, alright? That's cool?"

Like, if you thought it was a waste of a few minutes, why did you read the whole thing? You can stop halfway through, you know? It WILL NOT hurt my feelings, I promise.

One of my non-anonymous flames was something like, "I saw the title and summary, and was looking forward to it. Then you wrecked it by writing about drunken teenagers. Honestly, this isn't even realistic, and teens don't just do that."

Funny thing was, it was based on what I did one Saturday evening with my friends. No joke. Pretty much exactly what I did. So, I replied with, "Well, your welcome to having an opinion, but just thought I'd let you know, I'm one of those teens. This is my life. Welcome."

How do you deal with flames? Hate them? Love them? Don't give a *bad word*?
