This conversation just happened between myself and Grownasswoman.
jesmutca: something interesting happened the other day. my newspaper comes and in it there is this big article about a local author
Chantal: yes
jesmutca: and so, I’m nosey and go to read it and she's like, 28 and wrote a book, right? and im thinking hmmm. That’s nice. I’ll give this a little once over while I have coffee and cigarettes. and they give this whole synopsis about the book a bio of the author and an interview all is well, right?
Chantal: yes
jesmutca: well, like, one of the LAST questions they asked was "what made you want to go the self publishing route?" and i was shocked. SHOCKED.
Chantal: omg
jesmutca: because around these interweb parts it’s SUCH a huge thing, with this horrible stigma attached but in the paper and out there in the real world it’s like....barely mentioned. it was just a blip-- you never would've known
Chantal: interesting
jesmutca: it was. i was like wtf? am i so brainwashed by this fandom that im seeing horrible things where there aren’t any?? because no one, even the journalist doing this article seemed to think it was any different at all
Chantal: this is interesting like is it US? do WE put the stigma on self publishing?
jesmutca: EXACTLY
Chantal: look at darling camper who shall not be named. shes been doing it for years
jesmutca: yes but like she was published by a publishing house for one of her books. she DIDNT LIKE THE EXPERIENCE so she self publishes, its the better option for her
Chantal: yes. SHE has creative control
jesmutca: which means...IT CANT BE THE EVIL THING THIS FANDOM MADE IT INTO because darling camper who shall not be named is smart and humble and wise. she's no fool and she CHOOSES this
Chantal: yes yes
jesmutca: like....do you carry opinions or whatever that are molded directly from this fandom? because i shocked the hell outta myself
Chantal: yes. im shocked right now
jesmutca: like, i actually widened my eyes when i read that and was like, oh, this chick is gonna get blasted. then i realized I was the idiot. And now I have no answers and am just confused.
Discuss please. Self publishing or anything this fandom bubble has a strong opinion on.
Do you find yourself unknowingly influenced by this fandom? Is there anything that is a HUGE deal around here, but out in the real world...no one seems to care? Why?
Also, I admit I know nothing about self publishing or traditional publishing, therefore my opinion on either option is useless and baseless.
