What *Don't* you read?

Sunday January 15, 2012 at 11:44 AM

So this came up  as a side discussion in a thread several months ago, and I wanted to get far enough away from the thread that it wouldn't be in any way in response to the author of the original thread, becasue it's not mean t to be. (I don't even remember who started it, tbh.)

But there was a discussion about how people have different preferences in fic. And what hit me was that even though from my vantage point, all a preference is is a prefence, there's often a lot of baggage attached to it. For instnace, preferring vampfic means you're snooty, loving smut means you're shallow, liking a super-popular fic means you're just a sheep. We've all encountered those and similar judgments, or seen them attached to others. Because of that, I think sometimes folks can feel attacked for what they like, instead of having it feel no different than checking out at the bookstore with a romance vs. a contemporary mainstream novel vs. a fantasy novel.

So I'd like to do an experiment. Tell me, forest,

What Don't You Read?

I'm not talking about the "Oh, if it's exremely well-written, it doesn't matter." And I'd like to get away from the, "I love to read everything" kinds of conversations because the truth is, when you're stuck fic-diving, chances are there are things you go looking for over others to help you cull the pile. I think it goes without saying that the right fic can knock anyone off their feet and make them reconsider the things they enjoy in fanfic, and that most of us are open to reading anything if it comes strongly recommended, but I also think that most of us do have things that, if all else is equal, are going to make us choose to give our time to fic A over fic B. And that those differences should be discussed openly and celebrated without attaching extra meaning to them.

If this goes right, I hope it will be a showcase, almost like our Master Fic List, of how there's a lot of diversity in our fandom. So I'm thinking pairings, I'm thinking AH vs. vamp, I'm thinking historical vs. modern, I'm thinking romance vs. thriller, I'm thinking pack vs. Cullens, smut vs. UST, take your pick.

What do you disprefer to read? What floats your boat? What's going to be the deciding factor between Fic A and Fic B if they're both kind of okay? And even more interesting, when do you reach for a fic that is kind of okay because it has the features you want, instead of the fic that is amazingly well done but just not really up your alley? And what, if you had your way, would you like to see more of in fandom? Order it up. And lets just see how different our orders are.

And if you've got some thoughts on why preferences have turned into judgments, I'd love to hear those, too.

In Places No One Will Find

Sunday January 15, 2012 at 8:12 AM

It's written by CarrieCee and I spent the entire night reading it after having heard about it on Edwardville. I quickly fell in love with it and am hounding my email willing there to be another update.

Is anyone else reading this? I'd love to discuss it- theories, reactions, etc...

Here's the summary and link:

When a hazing prank goes wrong, troublemaker Edward is thrown together with the unpopular daughter of the Police Chief. Bella Swan was the last person Edward was likely to fall for. But Bella has a lot to teach Edward about himself, love, life and loss.

More Mark of Beauty updates!!!

Sunday January 15, 2012 at 12:21 AM

I know I had another cf on this story somewhere below, but she just posted THREE more chapters, you can't tell there are more chapters than the first one when you go to the first chapter, the adf e-mail notifications are not working so you can't tell if people are posting comments in an older cf and need to scroll all the way down and open the cf, and OMG THIS STORY IS GETTING VERY VERY INTERESTING AND I KEEP CHECKING MY INBOX ALL THE TIME AND I HAVEN'T DONE THAT IN LIKE FOREVER AND OMG (please hold my hand if she abandons it)

Chapter 5 (E/B shippers, brace yourselves. Him saying he's partial to her was even worse, imo): Sex and Lies

Chapter 6: Power and Jacob (see pic below)

Chapter 7: Sticks and stones (aka Alice is nuts but the only sane etc)

To make this interactive (lol as if I wasn't going to say this anyway): Is it me or are we having an influx of fantastic AU E/B angsty stories? Is AU the new BDSM? Are we going back to black basics? And am I the only one who can't accept a vamp Edward passing off as human having GREEN eyes?? He looks soooo damn good with dark eyes damn it, we deserve any chance we get.

Exhibit A: (despite the dark eyes, it's not that unrelated to the story because of the Jacob/Bella watching scene)

ETA: HOLY **** GUYS SHE JUST UPDATED AND LOOK AT THE DARK EYE REFERENCE AT THE END

Chapter 8: Black and Blue

ETA II: Yes, another update. Wonder what will show up in the photo hmm

Chapter 9: Weak and strong

The Forgotten

Saturday January 14, 2012 at 9:53 PM

Recently, I went surfing through some old documents littering my Fanfiction folder and what did I discover?

A chapter by chapter outline for an entire story.

It took me several minutes to remember that I had typed it up right before bed one night.  The story hadn't crossed my mind since.  I generally take the organic approach when writing, so to say that this little doc took me by surprise would be an understatement.

When was the last time you sifted through your own forgotten stories/plot ideas?  Do you have stories that you once started, but then lost interest in and have no intention of posting?

If they're doomed to rot away, why not post a snippet here? =)

If not, lets make it all about Roswell. Post pics, favorite episodes, etc. You name it you post it cause its SO ROSWELLIAN!

I am sorry if none of this makes sense...I am enjoying some of my favorite wine and its been a LONG week.

Saturday January 14, 2012 at 8:24 PM

YAY I remembered it's FFA :D Ok, so I need help. I'm getting another tattoo next month, A quote that says

"I love you much (most beautiful darling) more than everyone on the earth and I like you better than everything in the sky"

And I'm not sure where to put it. I already have a tattoo on my back so want to avoid there.

Where would YOU get a quote done? If have a quote tattoo, show us?

Does anyone know...

Saturday January 14, 2012 at 7:43 PM

So recently, I was thinking about Washed Up and how much I love it and how I wish it would update, which made me start thinking about other stories I liked that haven't updated in a while, which got me wondering, does anybody know whatever happened to Hiding in Plain Sight by Limona, Washed Up by xrxdanixrx, or A Room With a View by shorthappylife?

I'm not sure if this is required for this type of fire, but here's a rec anyway.

Stranded by Beth818 is currently owning me.

Edward and Bella get on the same plane, but it crashes in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Bella and Edward are the only survivors, and they luckily find a deserted island to stay on until someone finds them. But can they survive each other?

Pulled fic?

Saturday January 14, 2012 at 5:41 PM

I read this story that was called Bad News Bella, and was wanting to read it again because I loved it, but I can't find it. Did the author pull it? Or maybe I have the title wrong. The summary is that Bella's a news reporter who keeps saying dirty words on the air. She and Edward begin tracking this serial killer, get married, and have a kid. If someone could tell me if it was pulled or I just messed up the title, I'd appreciate it.

A funny, sweet, awesome story that has my favorite Edward, Southernward!

How Dare You Leave the Fandom!

Saturday January 14, 2012 at 9:20 AM

Perhaps this is a build on Raggdolly's CF below.

So, I had an interesting experience this morning regarding a survey I put out on twitter yesterday.

See, I'm in the outlining phase of an original work. If it's good enough and if I have the wherewithal to actually complete it, I might just try to do something with it.

The survey was "market research" if you will, just a quick way to test how closely what I have in my head matches preferences from a reader audience. I'm a researcher, so... this is the kind of thing I do.

Note: this has nothing to do with my fics, which I continue to write and enjoy, so don't think I'm jumping ship, LOL.

But anyway, one of the responses I received was... rather hateful and unnecessary. And it kind of befuddled me that someone would take the time to write it. (I'll include it as a comment since it contains some not-so-nice language).

Subsequently, I had a brief conversation with a friend of mine and we were theorizing the reasons and whyfores of the reaction I received (again, see comments).

Our discussion then proceeded to more general observations.

We've observed that when someone - anyone - makes a move to leave the fandom to pursue publishing or original works in general, be it pull to publish OR purely original, there's this very negative response from members of the fandom.

I have some theories on why this occurs.

I'd like to hear yours.

SINCE WE'VE TALKED ABOUT PULL TO PUBLISH TO DEATH, LET'S STICK TO ORIGINAL WORKS.

AND PLAY NICE

So to summarize:

Why do people in the fandom react negatively to someone choosing to move from fanfic to original fiction?

Improvised Twilight Parody

Saturday January 14, 2012 at 8:26 AM

Hey! My first-ever campfire!

If  you're in Boston/New England, and you're bored on a Friday night....

http://www.improvboston.com/shows/my-dark-love

I saw it in a workshop a while back and it is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. It's basically crackfic acted out on stage--every show, they spin a wheel to determine what supernatural creatures will be involved. When I saw it, it was a ghost and the devil.

Highly, highly, HIGHLY recommended. And if you're going to go, drop me a PM--I'm always happy to hit up shows here. (Full disclosure: I know a couple folks in the cast, and other folks who do stuff at this theatre.)

Anyone else seen any good Twi-parodies lately?

HAPPY NEW YEAR DEAR CAMPERS!

As my first 2012 campfire, I would like to let you discover my new addiction : Rookie Blue.

She is Andy McNally, nice rookie.

He is Sam Swareck, hot and sexy offficer undercover busted by McNally.

She becomes his Rookie and, GOD, the sexual tension between those two is killing me!

Hebergeur d'image

So : Do you watch Rookie Blue? Are you in love with manly-hottie-sexy-Swareck like I am?

I'm not sure if I need to get this campfire approuved...But surely, Swareck's sex-appeal is so unreal that this falls into surnatural subjects..., isn't it?

My rec is Water landing by camoozle : it's amazing !
