ADF's Weekly Fan Video Post

Wednesday January 18, 2012 at 6:16 PM

OMG I'm so SORRY for not posting this the past few weeks. And with all this SOPA/PIPA drama who knows how long people will still be able to even MAKE fan videos.  Although, now that I think about it Youtube does crack down on some people for fan videos.

Anyway...

LET'S DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT TODAY.

ALONG WITH POSTING VIDS, WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A DISCUSSION.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO MAKE FAN VIDS OR WHO LIKE WATCHING THEM, WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS REGARDING THE SOPA/PIPA ISSUE? YOUTUBE DOES SEND OUT WARNINGS AND EVEN SUSPENDS ACCOUNTS B/C OF FAN VIDEOS. DO YOU THINK THEY'LL PUT THEIR FOOT DOWN ON FAN VIDEOS PERMENENTLY EVEN IF THIS BILL ISN'T PASSED?

TALK TO ME CAMPERS.

They're Watching You...

Wednesday January 18, 2012 at 12:51 PM

As I'm sure most of you have seen by now, the protest against SOPA and PIPA is running strong today.

If you haven't go take a look at GOOGLE or WIKIPEDIA and see what they've done today.

So, LET'S CHAT.

What do YOU think about SOPA and PIPA?  Do you think they will be the end of the Internet as we know it?  Do you think it's a step toward Big Brother, or do you think there's a huge overreaction and everything will be the same?

I wanna know! :)

Shall We Play A Game?

Tuesday January 17, 2012 at 9:43 PM

So, here it is...11:30pm on the east coast of the good old US of A.  It's not *quite* hump day, but it's close!  And we all now what we do here in the Forest on hump day, right?  Yes, that's right...we play games.

So...shall we play a game (5 points if you know what movie that line is from ;)

We are here because we love fics, don't we?  We do, we do.  And we like to have fun with fics...we talk about them and we gush over them and rec them...we have read alongs...yeah, we like fics.  So let's have some fun with them!

Here is the challenge:

Using your paint programs, create an artistic representation of your favorite fic and post it here!

Now...this is the fun and interactive twisty part:  DO NOT tell us what fic this is a picture of!  Instead, after you post it, we campers will all try to GUESS the name of the fic your drawing is representing!

How's that?  Sound like fun?  Yeah, I thought so too!

So, let's get painting, Campers, so the guessing can begin!

And remember to play nice in the Forest, because, let's face it, not many of us are Salvador Dali's and this is for fun :)

Release your "Inner Dali" ;)

Rec Us Something Good

Tuesday January 17, 2012 at 6:17 PM

As always, this weekly campfire tells us

what you are reading or

what you have read that you think everyone needs to read as well!

It is very important that you include links and even more important that you not only give a description of the fic, but tell us

WHY YOU LOVE IT!

This week I thought I would ask you for TWO THINGS

1. What fic have you read or are you reading that you consider a 'guilty pleasure'?

2. What fic are you reading now that you haven't a clue where the author is going with it?

**And, of course, you can

rec us ANYTHING, that is why we are here.**

With all recs, don't forget to tell us why and give us a link.

Also, if you are reading something that someone else recs, you can discuss it or concur here. That helps campers decide if they want to read it as well!

when reviewers and authors collide

Tuesday January 17, 2012 at 2:56 PM

It seems like fanfic BNA's aren't the only authors to attack readers for less than stellar reviews...published authors are doing it now!

A reader on Goodreads created a scathing review of the book Tempest by Julie Cross on Jan. 4th.  The review was (IMO) pretty straight forward, and well articulated.  She did use some snark, but as we all know on ADF well placed snark is invaluable.

Almost instantly Dan Krokos came to white knight for Mrs. Cross.  Then an agent and an editor jumped on to defend the author.  Eventually Mrs. Cross herself jumped onto the thread.

This all led to Dan Krokos going onto twitter, blasting the original reviewer and GR's in general.  Other authors (who market their books themselves on GR's) jumped onto the bullying bandwagon (the author of Hex Hall was one of those authors).

This actually isn't the first incident of YA authors bashing readers for poor reviews.  It's happened repeatedly over the last month or so.

All of this junior high BS got me thinking about the Twifandom, and about all of the discussions we've had about poor reviews.  There was a post not too long ago where the relationship between fandom authors and fandom readers was discussed.  That we (the readers) feel that we have established some sort of relationship to our authors even if we've never spoken a word to them.

Is the same thing happening on GR's now?  I'm not sure there was ever a forum before where authors and readers could "friend" each other and discuss books.  Is this website blurring the lines a bit?  Why is it only YA authors who are acting this way?

Just want to hear all of your thoughts :)

Bells. Just Bells.

It's cooking time!

Tuesday January 17, 2012 at 1:46 PM

 And the Plot Thickens...

 A cooking ground for writers

 What we’re cookin’...

  •   Plot Bunnies! Ever have a plot bunny that needed some spice? Who said anything about too many cooks? The more the merrier, here! Bring your undercooked plots or ideas, and help others hash out their stories, too.

  •  Your Characters! Feel like your characters are just skin and bones? Come chat with your friends and see if they can help you create the perfect recipe for meaty greatness.

  •   Basically anything related to your fic that you need help with!

 Allergies...

We’re allergic to negativity! Constructive criticism and suggestions are welcome, but please try to stay positive and productive!

  •   And pilfering, too! There will be plenty of story ideas being discussed, so please stay respectful to your fellow authors by not using another's idea as your own - unless given explicit permission by the author first and then giving due credit, of course. No eating off someone else’s plate unless they say you can!

 Food Bank...

  •   Donations! Have some untouched plot ingredients that have been sitting in your cabinet for far too long? Come drop them off at our Food Bank and help another hungry author!

  •   Pick up! Need some ingredients for your writing? See what ideas have been left for a good home.

You’ve given us an excuse to use the kitchen for the first time.

So, come on in and share your ideas! Maybe someone will have that perfect plot point that pushes your story from good to great, and hopefully you’ll be able to do the same for a fellow author!

I started writing a o/s lastnight and got to thinking about contests.

I know they are all the time, but how do you learn about them? I have entered 2 so far, but I found them on Twitter. So, I'm looking for a site/blog etc that hosts or announces them-

Thanks!

How did you find your beta?

Tuesday January 17, 2012 at 8:47 AM

A good beta is hard to come by, and I was wondering how writers find their betas.

Writers: Do you use a different beta each story, or do you have one you go to for everything? What do you look for in a beta?

Betas: How did you find the authors you work with? Do you prefer to work with the same person or do you like having a handful of authors to work with?

And for my fic rec:

Mark of Beauty by danieller.one.two.three (yes, this is the same danieller of the workshop and under the apple tree fame)

I'm really digging this story. She updates often. It's a drabblish AU story. The summary is straight and to the point: Everything comes with a price. Bella was horribly scarred by a vampire attack. She goes to the Volturi to beg them to fix her, reallying thinking they will just kill her. Edward jumps in and decides to erase her scars in exchange for her servitude. So far, the gangs all here but in ways you would never imagine.

First Official BD2 Clip Coming Soon?

Monday January 16, 2012 at 9:38 PM

The Lexicon is reporting that Target stores will show the first official clip from Breaking Dawn Part 2 at their midnight DVD release parties.

I wasn't planning on attending, but now? Wouldn't miss it!

What do you think we'll get? Will it be a teaser trailer? Maybe a small clip with some BTS footage like the Wal-Mart Eclipse DVD?

Flex Your (Writing) Muscles

Monday January 16, 2012 at 12:33 PM

Hi Campers!!!

I hope you all had a great weekend, FFA was buzzing this week... I was sad I missed most of it due to being lost in a revision haze. Boooooo

Im not gonna beg ask you to click the ads this week but feel free ;). Planning on making that a monthly thing, first Monday of the month will be click the ads fic writing, put in your diarys (diaries???? IDK IDK)!!..

However

The CF last week got such a great response from you wonderful people, and I'm sure everyone would love to see your creative minds at work again (Yes, i will throw my awful writing into the ring as well!).

This week, Im thinking... the Cullens/Wolfpack/Humans/Volturi/Have I missed anyone?? out of their natural habitats, out of their comfort zone. And by that, i of course mean Forks and La Push (and Italy, if youre going for the Volturi!).

Maybe put the Cullens into an everyday aspect of your life...

Would Carlisle be constantly chasing the kids round with bandages and band aids? While Jasper runs far away from the blood!

Would Alice plan an office party and try to set up the Jim and Pam of the office?

Would Edward drive you mad telling you what everyone is thinking? (Im thinking a What Women Want crossover fic right here!)

Or would you use him as a great manny (a la Freddie PJ in Friends!)??

Someone stop me making tv/film references omg.

How would the Cullens cope if they had to live somewhere it wasnt overcast 95% of the time?? How would the locals react to that family that do their shopping in hats with massive brims and full length coats??

How would they cope somewhere like the UK where the most exotic animal we get is a fox??? and some pandas from China.... but i think they might be noticed missing.

Maybe the Wolfpack play for your beloved sports team

How long before they are hauled off for steroid testing?!

Or maybe they work in an office by day and are chippendales by night! (like The Full Monty but sexier.... altho there is something about Robert Carlyle..... I digress)

You are all MUCH better at this than me! So write a fic summary/fic prompt/mini fic/whatever you want and show off your skills!!

Mine will be in the comments, and it will, i hope, explain where the idea came from!

feel free to click the ads and take inspiration from them instead tho ;)

Next time (maybe next week, but probably the week after... damn exams), Im thinking... inspiration from around the internet.. twitter, fb, tumblr, ADF! Wherever! So keep your eyes peeled for something you could turn into a mini fic! Feel free to send/post pics or suggestions for future inspiration too...

Ewan and Robert Carlyle FYT (i had to google to spell his name right, so it'd be rude to not acknowledge the picture search, right?)

Greek bailout

Monday January 16, 2012 at 11:12 AM

OK, It is not FFA but I just got this and I want to share it, because it is great!- My rec is below.

It is a slow day in a little Greek Village. The rain is beating down and the streets are deserted. Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everybody lives on credit.

On this particular day a rich German tourist is driving through the village, stops at the local hotel and lays a €100 note on the desk, telling the hotel owner he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs in order to pick one to spend the night. The owner gives him some keys and, as soon as the visitor has walked upstairs:
- the hotelier grabs the €100 note and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher.
- The butcher takes the €100 note and runs down the street to repay his debt to the pig farmer.
- The pig farmer takes the €100 note and heads off to pay his bill at the supplier of feed and fuel.
- The guy at the Farmers' Co-op takes the €100 note and runs to pay his drinks bill at the taverna.
- The publican slips the money along to the local prostitute drinking at the bar, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer him "services" on credit.
- The hooker then rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill to the hotel owner with the €100 note.
- The hotel proprietor then places the €100 note back on the counter so the rich traveler will not suspect anything.

At that moment the traveler comes down the stairs, picks up the €100 note, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, pockets the money, and leaves town.

No one produced anything.
No one earned anything.
However, the whole village is now out of debt and looking to the future with a lot more optimism.

And that, Ladies and Gentlemen, is how the bail out package will work

:::°°°:::

My rec: A story that is updating regularly and I like. A sweet vampward doctorward. I read it on Twilghted, but maybe it is on ff net too.

Cascade Effect by Javamasta

Summary: Vampire Edward, having abstained from human blood for so long that he is almost densensitized to it, moves to Seattle as a 1st year pediatric resident. What happens when he foils James' lunch plans by saving Bella, a strangely intriguing human grad student?

Elizabeth Reaser

Sunday January 15, 2012 at 4:25 PM

I'd always seen her as Esme and just accepted her as a convincing member of the supporting cast.  Today I was sitting in bed (my perch these days as my second surgery's recovery isn't going so hot) and came across a movie called "Sweet Land"

Lo and  behold there is Ms. Reaser.  She is completely captivating me in this movie!

Aside from Patz and Stew, are there any movies you could recommend that I see from the other cast members BEFORE their Twi participation?

Of Hope

Sunday January 15, 2012 at 1:37 PM

So today what I need to hear are your stories of conquering the odds. Just because they are stacked against us does not mean we are down for the count. It happens over and over again. I just want to be reminded with some real stories. Big or small. Failing grades to fight of your life. Hope, like yawns, is contagious.

And what I want to hear about are your recipes for people going through chemo treatment. I know a few months ago there was a cf about this and I didn't heart it because I didn't want to need it... But we've known it was a possibility for a while now... SO if anyone has a link to that cf or recipes to share it'd be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

My rec: A Federation of Cassandras (I still don't get the name but I know there's something behind it lol) If Renesmee had been a little older she would have known that you can't do that forever—bite your lip and hope no one notices that something is killing you. Eventually you scream or fall over or bleed out on the ground, and everyone knows. Everyone knows and it's already over.

And that's exactly what happened.
