Help is all around us

Wednesday December 5, 2012 at 8:27 PM

First, I am totally blown away by the freecycle campfire.

OUR CAMPERS ARE AWESOME!

So I thought I would make sure to put up a little normalcy:

Once a week we open up the HELP DESK so people can ask questions, make requests and get advice.

If you have amnesia about a fic, this is the place to ask about it!

If you have a request for a type of story or a book, this is your spot.

If you are unsure about something that has to do with ADF, ask here.

If you have requests, questions or amnesia about any other areas in your life?

This is your campfire. Ask away! Many people like to answer!

NEXT WEEK we will have a special HOLIDAY HELP DESK where you can ask for recipes, gift ideas, help with crabby relatives, you name it. Sound like fun?

WELL, YOU HAVE TO WAIT 'TILL NEXT WEEK!

But for now....

WELCOME TO HELP DESK WEDNESDAY!

it's christmas eve in the drunktank

Snow Text - http://www.christmastext.com

it's that time of the year, little elves. time to make room for presents and/or make your heart grow three sizes!

for the holiday freecycle, we're changing it up a little this year while retaining the spirit of the freecycle.

start a comment with one of two things:

  • traditional freecycle in which you have stuff to give away for free but don't just want to throw out (as an example, i've gotten all sorts of things from freecycles over the years, like a kindle, a coach bag, a postcard from a far-off country, halloween costumes, books, CDs, etc.)
  • a gift you'd like to give to anyone at all- cookies, a giftcard, an iPad Mini to me, whatev
  • or! let's try being greedy. what do you want for chriskwanzukkustivus this yes? let us know. maybe someone will be willing to help you get it! (warning: i've no idea if this'll work at all, but hey. i'll try anything once.) i'm thinking like, "i'd really love five bucks to amazon" or "i could use a starbucks tomorrow". something easy to fulfill. i, however, will be asking for colin o'donoghue, if anyone can fulfill that, i expect an email forthwith.

then troll this post, responding to whomever. just don't be a hog and call dibs on everything, man. don't be that guy.

freecycle rules:

  • if you're offering, you have to be willing to ship it for free. don't ask to be reimbursed on shipping.
  • keeping that last rule in mind, if you snag something, offer to cover the shipping!
  • let us know to which countries you are willing to ship.
  • you must give your item away to whomever calls it first. no picking and choosing!
  • do not post your emails right on ADF. PM to take care of the details!
  • feed a tree while you're here! mama needs to pay the server dudes!
  • new twist this year: maybe you wanna play but don't know how. well, santa wtvoc is here! if you want to fulfill someone's request and remain anonymous, PM me. i'll be your santa go-between. i'll even mail them a giftcard or whatever if you like!

k, i think that's it. lemme know if you have questions. other than that, get to giving, little holiday hippies!

i wish i could shop a santa hat on this fyt:

George is going to Australia

Wednesday December 5, 2012 at 10:06 AM

Our Where's George adventure is finally up and running. George is in the mail and will be spending Christmas with Mabso in Australia. The listing of campers participating in Where's George can be found inside this campfire and in a PM to them from me. When you receive George in the mail go to www.wheresgeorge.com and enter his serial number to show where he's been. Leave a message, sort of like George's journal around the world. Then come back of ADF and let the rest of us know you've gotten George. Make your mark on George, ie. I've stamped ADF,colored his hair, and put KeyTattoo2 on him. Take his photo to show you and I shared Mr.George and being sistercampers we're generous like that,LOL!

If you want to join the Where's George mailing list just PM me. We want to put as many miles on George as possible and have a ADF momento to share.

Happy Holidays!

Social experiments are fun

Tuesday December 4, 2012 at 9:12 PM

An interesting discussion on twitter has led me to post this campfire.

 It serves two purposes:

#1.  I'm possibly looking for a few people to join me in a little exercise.

Here's what I'm thinking we would do:

- write a lemon-filled one shot

- post it under a new anon account.

- share your stats with me.

- Keep it as anon as possible (subtle pimping could be figured out later)

- After a set period of time, we could share the results here on ADF

Why would you want to do this, you ask?

Curiosity.  To get a better understanding of the way fandom works.

You just like science.

If I partake in this, it'll be a challenge for me as a writer - I've never shared any graphic lemons anywhere (lemons, yes. graphic? no). Readers will get some sexy times to read...win/win?

This isn't a sure thing - just an idea I'm throwing out there.

What are your thoughts on a social experiment such as this?

#2.  Discuss any relationships you've noticed between lemons and readership.  Do graphic lemons automatically mean an increase in reviews/readers? Are you more likely to read a story with or without a lot of vertical mambo?

Share your experiences inside

EK edit:  THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR RESPONSES! :)  If you're interested in doing an "anon-lemon" PM me, and we'll work out some deets!

Christmas Text - http://www.christmastext.com

do feed a tree, dear old chap!

this is your friendly warning that i'm doing a holiday freecycle tomorrow- with a twist. click here if you don't know what an ADF freecycle looks like!

if you have holiday wishes that you'd like fulfilled, maybe someone will be interested in fulfilling them!

take a chance. maybe you're dying for that book for your e-reader. or a starbucks. something.

be greedy. you deserve it. maybe you'll have a secret santa who'll judge whether you've been nice this year.

and if you can spare five or ten bucks, maybe you can make someone's holiday by granting their wish! in fact, if you wish to remain anonymous and don't mind my knowing about it, you can use me as your holiday go-between-santa-type-thing.

and, as always, if you have things you wish to get rid of, this will be the place.

tomorrow!

something to keep you warm on those cold, lonely nights fyt:

i'd apologize for how big this campfire is but the truth is that i'm not even a little bit sorry.

Reviews?

Monday December 3, 2012 at 11:09 PM

I know we've had campfires like this before but humor me? Or, if you're a Ranger, don't humor me and delete this. :)

I'm just curious what makes people tick in regards to reviews. What makes you decide to leave a review? What makes you decide not to leave one? I fully admit the inspiration for this question comes from my recent story update. I continuously have people add my story to their alert and favorites list but the ratio of reviews to this number is ridiculously low.

So what would make you add a story to your alerts or favorites but not leave a review? One friend suggested that only popular authors got reviews. Another said she doesn't leave reviews because of the whole P2P thing. Sometimes I'll add a story to my alert list as a reminder to go back and read it. Or if there's a story that I come to late and there's a ton of chapters to read I'll wait until I've read the whole thing before reviewing. Is that wrong of me? Do other people do that? If I find a new story to read I always try to leave an encouraging review regardless of popularity.

So I'm just curious how other people do things. What makes you decide to review or not to review. And I'm not just talking about praise here. Concrit reviews count too.

So it's Monday....

Monday December 3, 2012 at 9:21 AM

It's Monday, and I'm back in my office. I've opened my work email and there they all are, those work and real life things I should be doing. And I will. Eventually. But first, I have to make my usual circuit of the internets, just to catch up from overnight, you know?

Except I'm getting a little bored of my regular spots, so I want to know: Where do you hang out online? When you first fire up your laptop, which sites do you need to check before you do anything else?

My current round up (in order, because I'm OCD that way):

Gmail (for the fandom email, of course, whch I will read before the work email)

Twitter (because... duh)

Tumblr (where my life gets sucked away doing absolutely nothing)

ADF

Edwardville (to find new fics to add to my overly-long TBR list)

Google news- so I actually stay somewhat informed on the state of the world.

Obviously I need more places to waste time online, so share your time-sucks with me.

For your time, a little pretty for this dreary Monday morning, some dreamy, blue-eyed Colin O'Donohugh:

And the lovely VampsHaveLaws said I could post this!

Welcome to the Monday Morning Hot Guy Campfire. What better way to start your week than a hot guy?

Every Monday, I'm going to dedicate a CF to the Hot Guy of the Week. The catch? The CF can ONLY be about the current nominated guy.

We all have different tastes in men, so please don't yuck anyone's yum. If you have a man you'd like to see crowned for the week, PM or hit me up on twitter (@ffcherry) with his name.

So come on in and see who won the crown this week!

Peter Fac's mid-life crisis

Sunday December 2, 2012 at 1:50 AM

"We've been friends forever and had a lot of mutual friends and we reconnected in the middle of the year," the "Thor" actress, 28, told People. "It was one of those things where I'd been single for a very long time and he was going through a lot. We sort of bonded."

Peter, 38, endured a highly publicized divorce from his wife of nearly 11 years, Jennie Garth, in March, and wound up working with Jaimie again on HBO's "Nurse Jackie."

"It's very new to me and it's scary," she told the mag. "But it's also something we don't want to give up on because I know how it makes me feel in my heart. It makes me feel really good."

Adding, "He's a good guy with a great family and I couldn't be any luckier."

What is it with men and their mid-life crises? Ugh

43 years old and first campfire

Saturday December 1, 2012 at 9:29 PM

Help a lurker out please.  I hope that I'm doing this correctly because I've never done it.  Here goes......

I'm looking for a story.  E/B  completed  Edward offers to pay Bella's tuition for her  if she poses as his date when he goes back home for his ex fiancee's/girlfriend's wedding, i think. Edward proposed to Tanya before he went to college, but she denied him and embarrassed him.  He was kind of geeky I think, maybe just shy.  Bella hides the fact that she is bajillionairre rich from him so he thinks his wealth is a lot.  Charlie is some kind of playboy, inventor, smart rich absentee dad divorced from Renee an uber bitch.  I think Bella played violin and was a model when she was younger (forced by Renee) and tries to hide that past from Edward along with her wealth.

My first ever rec to you fine people is the Angel Series written by Drotuno.  This is how Twilight and it's books should have played out.  Very long series but hot and well written.

Bay Area Help!

Saturday December 1, 2012 at 7:58 PM

Hey everyone.  I know there's some San Francisco area campers out there.  And I need your help!

This may sound like the dumbest thing ever, but I'm moving to San Francisco in January and I have to go through the search for a good hair stylist that's good with short hair and color.  The only problem?  I don't want to have to be set back a few hundred bucks for this...I'm used to paying $70 for both a cut and a color!  You guys don't know how panicky I am having to leave my good friend/hair stylist for almost 10 years...Help!

Also, I will be in the city Dec 13-16th.  Short trip, but I'd love to meet up with some of you guys that are in the area.
