Fic Diving 3-4-14

Tuesday March 4, 2014 at 8:25 AM

Diving Deep for Fan Fic Treasures

Each week I will brave the treacherous waters of Fan Fiction for buried treasure. Below are the gems I've found this week!

Sixteen days until Spring!
(That's me trying to be positive about 9 degrees)

Don't forget the Three R's! Read, Review and Recommend!

The Glennies by ladyinblue6
An entry for the Make Me Laugh Contest 2013. A little dive into how fun it is to be Scottish. Includes Celtic bands, fiddle playing, and insane Highland dancers. Proceed with caution.

Scot Edward plays in a Celtic Band in Seattle. He meets Bella who is one of the The Glennies, who are Highland Dancers. This is just getting started, but beware, she is a self-professed slow updater.

Concealed in Stone by mcgt

Oscar night in Tinseltown and Bella Swan is all dressed up with nowhere to go. What happens when her uptight co-worker isn't as buttoned up as she thought?

Two Shot of lemony goodness. Because we need a tatted up Edward fix every now and then.

Go Fish by rubyblue9696
Life may seem mapped out and on the straight-and-narrow, but just when you think you see your own big picture, fate comes in to play with an animated deck of cards and tells you, simply, to please 'go fish'. Who knew it would all start with a can of worms?

E & B are best friends. He leaves a brokenhearted B to follow his dream. Now he’s back in their quirky little small town and is looking to make Bella his. Some different roles for our usual cast of characters that I am really liking.

FLASH BACK FIC DIVE:

Playing It Straight by MissWinkles
Sometimes love is all about telling the truth. AH, OOC and very, very fluffy. Written for the Twilight Twenty-Five Round Six.

Bella needs a new roommate. She moves in with Edward who is engaged to “Sam.” Funny with good snarky E & B banter.

The Practicum by The FicChick
“We're going to be teaching high schoolers how not to get each other knocked up or infected with gonorrhea. It's hardly a romantic evening for two."

One of my all time favorite Edwards. Bella has to teach Sex Ed with new teacher Edward. If by some chance you haven’t read this yet…you need to get on this immediately.

A Compendium of Thoughts by ItIsRaining
After Edward is struck with a serious illness, Bella offers to give him a ride to school every day. His musings on life are priceless and unique. Based in its entirety on a true story.

The writer has based this on her own relationship. “Edward” actually writes the epilogue. I enjoyed it very much and am so delighted that they got their HEA.

Happy Reading All!

Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate it!

The Outcome of P2P

Tuesday March 4, 2014 at 6:00 AM

I've bought three pull to publish books from authors I admired and whose original stories I adored.

The first one hadn't been edited much, so in essence, it was the same as it was as a fic and even the mistakes were left in.  Perhaps this is because this book was self-published?  I'm not sure.

The second one had a lot of extra sex in it than the fic.  I think it was being marketed as erotica and hence the additions but for me, it took away from the original story, especially since the added bits didn't quite match the original bits. The original story was about how a person with a lot of emotional walls gradually let them fall in stages. The added sex jumbled that process up.  I was disappointed in the published piece.

The third was re-edited, too, and though that story was largely the same, less was left to our imagination.  We knew what was going on more in "The Edward's" head than we did before and while it didn't quite ruin it for me, it wouldn't have been a book I would have bought had it come out in the normal way.

So... of the P2P books I've read after they'd been published, I've been largely disappointed. I think this sort of guarantees that I won't P2P my stuff.  I'm beginning to think the stories just can't make the transition.

I think for the purposes of discussion, we should probably leave Master of the Universe out because that was such an anomaly in many ways.

What has been your experience? Are the published books the same, better or worse than the original fiction? Why do you think that is? Do you think the authors make anything from it, for real?

Because Summaries

Saturday March 1, 2014 at 9:13 AM

Write a summary about moose flying around the world killing politicians that has nothing to do with your story, but don't you dare tell me you suck at summeries.

Here's a rabbit to disturb you.

A chance encounter. Will their worlds collide? Cannon pairings. (Watch out for allergies against gunpowder.) The boy has a deep, dark secret that makes their worlds literally come crashing down. Will she shatter into million pieces? Or will he be there to pick them up. Will they or won't they, wink wink? AH for Always Horny, AU for Absolutely Unnecessary Because You Already Said It's Human, EB for Ew, Bubbles. Warning: Contains flying pajamas. Totally won every contest evah 'cause I'm awesome like that.*

Let's talk about summaries.

Some catch your eye and others do not. Why? What do you seek in a summary? Do you want to be told that a story ends happily or would you rather find out yourself? Do you think an author is obliged to add warnings? What are the expressions that have caught your eye that you wouldn't mind not seeing in a summary (ever again)?

Does a summary matter all that much to you?

For the sake of the writers out here, I want to add that no author is obliged to share (y)our preference, neither should you be paranoid if your summary contains anything I mentioned. Peace.

*I would totally add a contest win to a summary if I won any. That being said, I shall go to my profile right now and make up contests all of which I will claim to have won. "Won Best Dead Spider Award" and "Best Portrayal of a Dancing Table You Have Never Seen" will be among them. Watch out, I will win every contest never held!

I am not the decider

Saturday March 1, 2014 at 8:42 AM

Hi Campers! I need some advice on that age-old question. PC or Mac?

I bought a new laptop in August. I considered buying a MacBook Air at the time, but let myself get talking into buying and HP Envy instead. I just found out I'm going to have some extra money so I'm considering selling my laptop and buying the MacBook.

But now I'm second-guessing myself. Should I really make the switch? Is it going to be a hassle to transfer all my files? Do I get the 11" or the 13"? And what about flash storage? Do I go for the 128GB or the 256GB? As you can probably tell by all my questions, technology is not my thing. Add to that, I'm horrible at making decisions.

So...what advice can all of you give me?

Calling all Brits,please.

Saturday March 1, 2014 at 7:11 AM

Ok. I read English Literature often. I am not even sure I sure can call it that...Chick Lit?.. perhaps that is better.

I notice that in nearly every book. There is tea and cakes, and biscuits etc.. all over the place.

These characters are not just having these treats during "Tea Time"; it is everytime they see each other.

You get an upsetting phone call, " I'll go make some tea".

Your brother is in a car accident, " I'll put the kettle on".

You are moving, " I packed the kettle last so it is the first thing we put in place"

And cakes---cakes at all times. I am going to gain weight from all the cakes I am reading about!

I would not be able to eat cake on a daily basis like that...not even close. I am not all up to date on this stuff, but I do not believe you guys have quite the obesity problem that we have here, and you are eating cakes and biscuits all the time it seems? How do you manage this? I am so jealous.

I even just finished a dystopian English series set 200 years in the future that was an M/M series with two men that were, in no shape or form girly....cakes, and tea, and biscuits all over the place there as well.

I love all that is English. BBC America is one of the only things I ever watch. I am of the opinion that you guys have a superior gene pool. I really do. When you think about all the authors/artists/actors/musicians that have come from your area..there is really no competition. AND don't even get me started on the good looks...Why are English and Australian men so fliping gorgeous all the time?

I swear this now- Before I die, I am going to spend time in England and I am going to show up at people's houses and demand tea and cake and gossip....I must experience this.

SO-- My Brtitish campers, how is it really? Are these books portraying it how it really is?

Oh and can you add pics of favorite cakes/biscuits.  Like a Sultana? What is that. Chocolate Crunch...What is a flapjack?  I would love some pictures of the favorites.

TWILIGHT TUNA VOTING

Friday February 28, 2014 at 3:55 PM

IT'S TIME TO VOTE!!

It's time to vote for the most disgusting tuna recipe!

Competition was stiff. Seriously, you ADF Campers just don't fool around when you're fooling around.  In fact, I couldn't bring myself to eliminate anyone (I suck, yes I know)!

(Can I just take a moment to say that I have a new-found respect [and sympathy] for our Rangers and the other folks here who've been tasked with choosing finalists and/or winners in the past? It's not easy to do when you're fond of all the contestants!)

  • There are 12 entries, they will appear in random order
  • You can only vote once
  • You can only choose one entry
  • Voting ends at 11:59 p.m. EST on Saturday, 3/1/14
  • Winner will be announced Sunday, 3/2/14

Click on the Tuna to cast your vote
(and thanks to everyone for playing along!)

Cast your vote

*After accepting your vote, you're supposed to be ushered to a "Thank you for voting" page.  Apparently, that isn't happening, but the site is counting your vote - I've been checking the results.  If you find that you're unable to cast a vote at all, please PM me with your choice (you'll have to check the entries in the original campfire), and I will manually add it for you.

FF.net Fail

Friday February 28, 2014 at 7:22 AM

If you were not aware, ff.net was down for a few hours last night.  I happened to stumble across this website link that will tell you if a website is down.  This link is for fanfiction.net, but it works for other sites as well.

http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/fanfiction.net.html

I bookmarked it because no doubt, ff.net will fail again!
