Fic Diving 2-18-14

Tuesday February 18, 2014 at 11:49 AM

Diving Deep for Fan Fic Treasures

Each week I will brave the treacherous waters of Fan Fiction for hidden treasure.  Here are the gems I've found this week!

Still cold here.  Mother Nature makes me say swears.

Please let the writers know your thoughts and let them know you found them here in the ADF Fic Dive!

Anything But Mine by WitchyVampireGirl
It was the summer before their senior year of college; Edward wanted one last summer of fun and relaxation, Bella was running from the pain of the last few months. What they found was everything they wanted and so much more. But will it last past the summer or fade like the setting sun?

Summer romance is in the cards for E & B.  Bella has an angsty past, Ed has awesomely gay BFF's and an Uncle who I envision as Gary Busey. I think this will be a fun ride.

If You're Going Through Hell, Keep Going by debruk34
Or: How the Internet Helped Ruin My Marriage and Gave Me a New Life. Learn how Bella's marriage fell apart, how her friends helped her, how her husband reacted, and how she found her second chance at lasting love.

Bella is married to Carlise who is a complete pig.  She's a woman scorned and will take him down!  Edward just popped into the story and I'm excited to see their relationship develop.
ETA: I also love her multiple choice review options.  :)

A Rendezvous with Death by DeltaDawn'sDreams
From different directions and for different reasons, Bella and Edward wind up in the same sleepy southern town of Macon, Georgia. Who, or what, called them there and why?

After tragically losing his wife, Edward and his little girl move to his family's old plantation home in GA. There is definitley something spooky happening in this beautiful old home that has the locals completely terrified of the house.  No Bella yet. I'm anxious to see how she fits into the story.  Also, I'm a sucker for Daddyward.  Particularly a Daddyward in a supernatural/horror story.  Looking forward to more!

FLASH BACK FIC DIVE:
Few short ones this week.

The Pull Out King by Ho Hey Contest
A silly sad story about everything going to hell, kleptomania, cry-babies and finding a place.

Downtrodden Edward meets a quirky Bella.  Can she help him find his place in the world? Part of the Ho Hey Contest, but can also be found right here on ADF.  Written by our very own Jandco!

Catch My Breath by tanglingshadows
Once upon a time, a quirky woman barreled into a soft-spoken man's life and turned it upside down. Not that he complained about it...

Super sweet short fic with Copward and a total spaz Bella!

Fixing Bella by CullensTwiMistress
When newly-single contractor, Edward, takes on work for uptight designer, Isabella Swan, he soon finds out she may just be more than what he bargained for. AH; ExB; EPOV.

Ed is infatuated with this new client, Bella.  She's standoffish and bossy, but he finds that she's just guarding her heart.

As always, thank you all for your wonderful support.  Your feedback is greatly appreciated and helps me when I'm sifting through the rubble!

OK, now wait a minute!

Monday February 17, 2014 at 10:22 AM

ADF campers and their wonderful recs have reignited my interest in Twilight fanfic.  I've started a couple of new stories, and I've been revisiting some old favorites.  I also discovered an overlooked update to a story that is by one of my favorite authors in the fandom.

Reading through this update last night, I got stuck on something that sometimes bugs me about SM's vampire canon, especially as this author has interpreted it for this story.  Newborn vamps are supposed to be blood-crazed and unpredictable.  A real handful.  Well, newborn vamps in this story are so bad that unless 4 or 5 other vamps babysit them, they are capable of wiping out the entire town of Forks in no time at all.  And ... really?  If newborn vamps are that bad, the Volturi would never be able to keep vampires a secret, no matter how vigilant they are about secrecy.  Obviously, not every newborn vamp has multiple babysitters (like, for instance, Carlisle, Edward, Alice, and Riley to name but a few).

I know we've discussed this before, but it's been a while.  What elements of a story bother you and take you out of the story? What causes you to be unable to sustain a willing suspension of disbelief?  Stone skin?  Ice-cold vamp wieners?  It doesn't have to be Twilight or fanfic related, it can be any story, anywhere, books or fic.

Music to read by:

Sunday February 16, 2014 at 6:06 PM

What music do you love to listen to when you're reading? What about when/if you're writing?

Does that change based on what you're reading or writing?

I have to admit that Incubus is one of my favorites when I'm writing... even when I'm reading sometimes! (But I always have to stop for Anna Molly, and listen to it again!)

But beautiful, classical music is one of my favorites. I love the notes that hold me, but are still a peaceful background. Sometimes the music puts me in a romantic mood, and I feel like my words are more beautiful when they've been written across that backdrop.

I discovered this on youtube, and right now, I'm loving it. But I'm always looking for new things and new inspiration! So share what you love when reading or writing!

Some love for Claire

Sunday February 16, 2014 at 5:30 PM

As ADF may have noticed, I'm pretty fond of Sam Heughan, the Scottish actor who will portray Jamie Fraser in the upcoming Outlander series on Starz.

Such is my love for all things Jamie, I've kind of ignored Caitriona Balfe, the Irish actress who will portray Claire, the heroine of Outlander, Jamie Fraser's one true love, and the person from whose perspective Outlander is told.

I found this video today, which is a compilation of some of Caitriona's modeling gigs on the catwalk and .... DAYUM!  Cait is fierce!

How do you feel about Caitriona's casting?  Do you think she'll do the role justice?

Also, what actress(es) do you most admire and why?

Thank You!

A few weeks ago I added a Campfire about my son raising money for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  Well, Thanks to our generous friends and family, and some extra special Campers, he surpassed his goal!  Since he hit his goal, we shaved his head in support of the kids at St. Jude!  Thank you all for such great support!  The Forest is an amazing place!

Boys in Girl Clothing

Saturday February 15, 2014 at 10:10 PM

Let's say we have a boy who is too little to really pick what he wants to wear.

Is it okay to dress the kid in pink princess clothing?

What if the clothing is hand me down stuff from an older sibling?

What if the clothing is hand me down but the parents can comfortably afford to buy the kid masculine clothing?

Is it okay to put the kid in public in said clothing?

Is it okay to blast pictures across the internet of the toddler in pink??

And lastly, even if the kid were a tad older, say three, and were able to pick the stuff out on his own, do we warn the kid that the clothing isn't gender appropriate or do we let the toddler deal with what ever comes along?

Unexplained phenomena...

Saturday February 15, 2014 at 4:40 PM

The idea for this campfire was sparked by the first question on Ellinor's campfire a few below.

"What is your earliest memory?"

It's weird that I saw this because just last night, my brother was over for my birthday and we were talking about our earliest memories and he told me that his is of sitting in the middle seat in the back of a car with two Asian kids - one on either side of him, an Asian man driving, and an Asian woman sitting in the front passenger seat, driving down a long straight road, with a huge mushroom cloud looming on the horizon, growing bigger and bigger, coming closer and closer and the people in the car were talking animatedly in an unknown language.

Several things strange with that... We're not Asian - though granted we sometimes get mistaken for Asians. I'm his only sibling and we've never seen a mushroom cloud...

His next memory is of throwing up on our front porch in Port Angeles when he was 3. That did actually happen.  I remember that one, lol.

I find this so fascinating. I don't believe in reincarnation - and neither does he.   He thinks he somehow has someone else's memory.  Which I also don't believe in.   I asked how long he'd had the memory and he said for as long as he can remember.  I have a few ideas explaining his experience but really, I don't know.  I just find it really interesting.

Just curious if anyone else has had these experiences.  Or something else that just doesn't jive with your world view?

FYT:  I'm loving this video.  Idk.  It's just fun.

So, I had this hankering...

Saturday February 15, 2014 at 2:01 PM

I was watching a cooking show set in Napa & I realized that I had this hankering to read Vines by FictionFreak95. Well, she pulled all her stuff, but it is on TWCS, but I hate the format. Anyone have a PDF? I checked Perusing the Shelves already. Can you use a downloader on TWCS?

I also have a hankering for Pinot noir, but that isn't happening right now sine I have one sick kid and one sick husband. Oh, this popped my campfire cherry, so yay me!

Spamming...?

Saturday February 15, 2014 at 10:45 AM

I frequently read "The Grauniad", and this is what they asked when they met Tippi Hedren. How would you answer?

What is your earliest memory?

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

What is the trait you most deplore in others?

What was your most embarrassing moment?

What is your most treasured possession?

Where would you like to live?

What do you most dislike about your appearance?

What is your favourite smell?

What is your favourite word?

What would be your fancy dress costume of choice?

What is the worst thing anyone's said to you?

Is it better to give or to receive?

What do you owe your parents?

To whom would you most like to say sorry, and why?

What was the best kiss of your life?

What has been your biggest disappointment?

If you could edit your past, what would you change?

If you could go back in time, where would you go?

What is the closest you've come to death?

What single thing would improve the quality of your life?

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?

Ellinor

Have you seen good movies lately?

Saturday February 15, 2014 at 10:13 AM

I saw Philomena today. And it made me cry, and it made me angry, and it made me frustrated.

And it made me happy I went to see it.

Tell me about the movies that have made an impact.

ETA: Judi Dench.
