Fandom awareness?

Sunday June 15, 2014 at 5:41 AM

With the increasing media focus on sexual harassment towards women as well as some recent personal experiences, I've been reading a lot of fanfiction with a very different viewpoint. Yesterday I read an update for a story in which the Edward's behaviour was completely awful and dismissive of Bella's non-consent, yet the majority of reviews deemed this to be 'hot', and praised Edward's possessive tendencies.

What is it about the Edward and Bella pairing/OTPs in general that excuses and glorifies their actions? Should we - as a fandom predominantly made up of women - be educating our readers about this behaviour? Even though the original source material completely dismisses this as a non-issue (specifically referencing Jake's 'assault' of Bella in Eclipse and the reactions towards this afterwards)?

Sorry for being a Debbie Downer with this post! I'm hoping the campfire after this one will be about how fine some of the World Cup players are looking (sigh, Erik Durm...) with lots of pictures for reference ;)

The Drop (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10438858/1/The-Drop)
That was the summer everyone stopped looking at me as Ben's little sister. Bonfires and beer. Sand and sun. We just kept climbing higher. None of us were ready for the drop.

The World Needs More Xanax

Saturday June 14, 2014 at 9:44 AM

So, today I am giving a presentation at our local Juneteenth celebration (for those of you wondering "What the heck is that?").

Over the years, I've given more presentations, and facilitated more trainings, than I can even count.  Some have gone better than others, but none have been horrible.   Er, I don't think so, anyway.  Still, anticipation of every single one makes me a nervous wreck.  Not to the point of freaking out, but there is always an associated case of nerves every. single. time.

Luckily, 2 to 3 minutes into every presentation, I usually hit my stride and start to feel comfortable, and sometimes (depending on the audience) I even have fun.

But I'd still rather take a beating, most days, than contemplate doing it.

Public speaking is supposedly most people's number one fear.  So I ask you - what activities make you incredibly anxious - filling you full of dread, panic and loathing?  Conversely, what activities do other people dread that you actually really enjoy?  Hmmmmm?

My nekked cat, sleeping, for your viewing pleasure.
She doesn't have anxiety.

Cars

Friday June 13, 2014 at 8:00 PM

My 12 year old Opel Vectra just died. We already have a Chevrolet Captiva, automatic, which had cost us a lot. However, those were pre financial crisis days, so we're regretting having to pay it off, but don't hate ourselves for taking the decision to buy it. We're used to driving automatic, mostly because I'm really a lousy driver, and I have a bunion on my foot which makes me afraid of driving a stick car with the clutch and all. My husband also has knee pain and a couple of spine surgeries. However, his brother died in a car accident related injury, so we're both thinking safety first, i.e. go for a bigger car, with good safety specifications. Buying a big car that is automatic is not an option, as they're more expensive and I hear children need to drink milk every morning.

So, is it true that automatic cars are the norm in the US, but not in Europe? And that Americans and Asians buy a new car every like five years? Also, does anyone know if driving a manual car can cause further damage and more pain to those suffering from bunions or have knee pain? I've also been wondering if driving a manual car is not as safe because you have one hand on the wheel and all, but then again if you google it you'll see that automatic cars allow you to multitask (e.g. switch stations, answer the phone) and thus are more distracting. So far we're leading towards buying Kia Sportage 'cause it's the cheapest SUV (or compact SUV or whatever) and 7 year warranty. We were thinking of buying Peugeot 2008, but everyone says they have several problems

Opinions or experiences?

ETA: Just bought a VW Polo. Small, yes, but I did try to drive a manual and, no. Thus, I went for the automatic that our budget would allow. Please don't tell me anything bad about this car!! Only car I didn't do any reserach on, and there I  was, buying it just like that! (It was on special offer, 14 500 euro)

Still Not Getting It

Friday June 13, 2014 at 11:30 AM

There are things in life that amaze and confound me. Things that leave me puzzle by the appeal everyone else has for them and I am the last person on earth that gets 'it'.

Are you also confused by pop culture items, celebrities, social media and the like? Are there things that make you go hmmm?

Some baby sloth for your time. He's either plotting to take over the world or he doesn't get it too.

Choose wisely, my friends :)

June Books (and my sob story)

Friday June 13, 2014 at 4:19 AM

You know those horrible, staged informercial gifs of epic and improbable clumsiness?

And those fanfics with a super clumsy Bella Swan and everyone says, "No one can be that clumsy in real life!"

Hand to God, that is my life. I am the clumsiest person around. And you know what I found out? Even with keeping my drinks far from my computer desk, I can stumble just a little while carrying a cup with about 2 tablespoons of water, and it will land right in the keyboard of my Mac Air.

And my laptop did not like that. Not one bit.

So...no June book campfire for a while there. Let's make up for it now! We've got like...nine days of book stuff to talk about!

We'll cover #5 - 13, so warm up your typing fingers and join us.

Bondfire ~ Quotes

Thursday June 12, 2014 at 9:51 AM

When we were at the park this weekend, someone was doing a social experiment:

I'm not sure if you can see clearly, but those are envelopes hanging from that tree.  There are pink and blue cards in the middle and there were instructions on the tree trunk to write inspirational quotes on the pink ones and for others to comment on them.  The blue ones had some famous quotes on them.

What quotes have special meaning for you?  What have you read that has had a profound effect on your life?

I like this quote but I just found out that it has been incorrectly attributed to Mahatma Gandhi:

"Be the change you wish to see in the world."

Supposedly it was re-worked from his actual words:

“If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. … We need not wait to see what others do.”

For next week:

Let's post summertime photos as a Picture This x Bondfire crossover CF.
