hey! are here some fans of Elena Forbes?

Friday April 13, 2012 at 1:14 PM

Hello everyone! I want to ask u ladies, if someone here are interested in works of Elena Forbes an English writer of crime fiction?

My problem is next: i'm from Ukraine and in our country is published only one book of Elena Forbes 'Die With Me'. I tried to download the following two books: 'Our Lady of Pain' & 'Evil in Return ', but my attempts  failed :(

So do you know, if the author has this books available as a free read online, so i can read it in a legal way?

Thank you for your attention and possible assistance :)

And here is my recommendation for fanfiction: The Doll House by Kambria Rain

We were all going to die. I used to be an optimistic person, but that went out the window as soon as the hot mountain man decided we were going to hunt the hunters. AH. Warning: So far, there are minor character deaths, and Edward's a little scary.

I finally saw Bel Ami

Friday April 13, 2012 at 11:54 AM

I suppose it is FFA, as here it is Friday evening. If not, tell me and I'll be happy to add a rec.

So, finally I saw Bel Ami, and I'll try to write an unbiased review. It is a decent film, not a great film. The main defect is that it is slow in parts (the middle part). George D. is a social climber, but he is not completely evil at the beginning. In fact he has some innocence that is quite endearing. But the environment he finds himself in corrupts him quickly and when he realizes he has been played by people who despise him, he will get his revenge and prevail. I don't know if this is  the psycological portrait one finds in the book (Not my favorite, I read it eons ago) but that is what the screenplay is about. From a visual point of view the film is very good, costumes and scenes are almost perfect, I would say. The three leading ladies are very good actresses.

Now, Rob's acting. Decent too, particularly in the first half of the film, where he is more innocent. Later on ... I don't know, he is not inexpressive, far form it, maybe he moves his face too much. Better directors could have steered him better, possibly. I am very curious about the opinion of others who have seen it.

As for the love scenes ... they are hot ... but too fast. Anyway, I have nothing to complain. I'll post more gifs inside.

The Powerful Bella

Friday April 13, 2012 at 11:03 AM

Happy Friday, campers!

It's not the happiest Friday for me, since I'm madly finishing my thesis. The good news is, my work is all about Twilight! All the research I've done over the past four months has left me wondering... Is Bella actually an empowered woman? Is there a way to read the Twilight Saga such that Bella achieves freedom and power through her romance with Edward?

As I draw my final conclusions about the Saga, I want to ask you a few questions. Will you help me?

1) Before Breaking Dawn (in which Meyer quite obviously writes Bella as the "white queen") what, if anything, did you find personally empowering about reading the Saga? What was empowering for Bella?

2) Did you feel any loss of power for Bella in Breaking Dawn?

3) What's your demographic? Married? Mother? Student? Teenager?

I'm actually kind of excited to see how JK does with adult lit. The premise sound interesting

J.K. Rowling Reveals Title and Release Date of First Post–Harry Potter Book
Today 2:24 PM PDT by ALEXIS L. LOINAZ

Harry Potter's adventures may be over, but author J.K. Rowling isn't finished casting her literary spell.

One of the most successful authors of all time sent fans into a tizzy when she announced in February that she'll be penning an adult-themed novel—her first literary effort since retiring her boy wizard's wand in 2007.

Rowling didn't reveal much then, but now we've got juicy new deets about the book's title, storyline and when we can expect it to drop…

MORE: Harry Potter Grows Up? J.K. Rowling to Write First Adult Book

First up, the title: The Casual Vacancy.

Intriguing! Sounds deceptively nondescript, but with just the right curio quotient thrown in.

So what's it about? Here's a brief synopsis provided by Rowling's publisher, Little, Brown:

"When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils...Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen."

MORE: Daniel Radcliffe "Miffed" About Harry Potter's Deathly Oscar Curse

Hmmm…students, teachers, councils, ancient abbeys, battles—sounds like awfully familiar turf for Rowling, who earlier today tweeted a link to her brand-spankin'-new author website.

So when can you get your paws on Rowling's new tome?

Set your alarms for Sept. 27, 2012. And get those lawn chairs ready for what will likely be a bum-rush campout.

So, will you read it?

No-I am not talking about THESE sugary bombs...

I am talking about the things you put in your home, car, purse, and office to bring good karma, luck and prosperity. Do you wear a special piece of jewelry? Do you own a protection talisman/statue? Burn incense? Grow herbs? Collect crystals? Crosses? Star of David? Holy water? You get the picture.

Love/hate relationship?

Thursday April 12, 2012 at 8:35 AM

Hi campers ^^

First of all, I'd like to say that I'm not pointing fingers or anything, I'm not criticizing anyone but I just want to understand. PLEASE DON'T FLAME ME but...

Seeing all the MOTU hate and campfires I've been wondering...

If I ever write a AH fanfic, then turn it into original fiction  and it gets published, will you hate me?

Because sometimes I don't really understand the hate: as a fic MOTU was more or less loved (I think?) and now that it's a book... not so much.

Maybe the fandom was a test subject, maybe not, but we'll never really know. But there are so many wonderful fanfics in this fandom, with all the AU and the AH, some of them I consider as good as Original Fiction. You change the names and the descriptions the author used to keep it fanfic and you get a great novel. If one of these authors pull and publish, gets lots of money AND their fiction gets turned into a movie? I'd be happy for them.

Ok, in this case, the books' value in my eyes is not as much as the author got, but still... I can't really blame a woman for accepting so much money to sell these books/fanfic -words she wrote- and their rights.

Why do you dislike the author/the books/all the talk about them?

Edit: Just wanted to add that I have no plans of P2P

Edit2: Sorry I wasn't able to reply to all of you today since it's late, but I'll come back tomorrow.

My rec:

Can be read like a one shot even though it's technically on hiatus.

And guess what FSOG was crossed with? You got it right : Twilight!

Hi-la-ri-ous.

And because i do not consider that as a rec, i will give you a real one : Its kina old, completed and classic but I just love it and, frankly, I don't read much fanfiction these days so I may not be aware of what's new and good besides my two loves Dusty and Water Landing.

Bondage, spanking, blindfolding, and other adventurous forms of sexual expression? They’re no problem for E L James, author of the runaway erotic best-seller Fifty Shades of Grey. But James — a voracious reader with a collection of some 800 erotic romance novels at her home in London — admits she’s a little squeamish when it comes to The Hunger Games. “I read the first one,” she says, in an exclusive interview with EW. “It upset me, this society that murders children for sport. Murdering your children is a step too far!” She prefers the two subsequent books “when they stand up and fight back. I don’t think [The Hunger Games] is a great love story at all. It’s all about revolution.”

you have just described the plot!

Still, James gives Suzanne Collins’s electrifying trilogy the highest of Jamesian praise: “It’s a ripping yarn,” she says. The Vintage Books edition of the author’s own ripping yarn, Fifty Shades of Grey, is on sale today; Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed will be published on April 17.

Another birth control fire

Tuesday April 10, 2012 at 4:53 PM

We've had several fires lately about birth control and access to women's healthcare.

It turns out that the FDA is currently taking public comment on what drug classes to move toward Over The Counter status.  If you feel strongly that this category of drugs should be moved to OTC, now is your time to be heard.  There is no guarantee of success, but it never hurts to express your opinion.

The FDA Website.

Photobucket

The public comment area for this notice.

They do specify that,  "All comments should be identified with Docket No. FDA-2012-N-0171, document number 2012-4597."

There was an article in Bloomburg News about doctors petitioning the FDA to do this.  I'm sad at how little news coverage it got.

I don't intend to start another politically motivated debate, please don't hurt me ;)  For me this is matter of logic.  If I'm considered smart enough to diagnose and treat a yeast infection, manage my reoccuring heartburn, or deal with my nicotine addiction, I'm certainly smart enough to use once a day birth control without a doctor's guidance.  The new guideline for Pap screening is every 3 years-so that is no longer a reason.

Thank you to wtvoc for permission.
