Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

Tuesday October 15, 2013 at 2:09 PM

October 15 is the official Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness day, but the whole month of October is filled with various walks and fundraisers to support families who are going through a difficult pregnancy, who have lost an infant at a young age due to SIDS or other causes, or who have had a baby born still.

My second daughter would be turning 5 years old this January and I think about her every day.  She was diagnosed with Trisomy 18 when I was 19 weeks pregnant with her.  In medical school and residency, we learn that Trisomy 18 is "incompatible with life".  What an awful and untrue phrase.

(Trisomy 18 is when you have an extra 18th chromosome, just like Trisomy 21 aka Down Syndrome is when you have an extra 21st chromosome.)

We chose to carry her to term as it was the best decision for me/us/our family.  We are also lucky in that we had SO much support from our families, our friends, and most importantly our health care professionals.

There are many fundraisers and walks this month going on locally and nationally and I urge you all to take a peek at them, even if you aren't able to contribute monetarily, just for your own information.  While we had the best care possible, there are many others who aren't so lucky.  The proceeds from these organizations go to education of physicians, nurses, social workers etc, to memory boxes for babies, to infant photography, to grief support and sibling support programs.

I'll post more details about my story inside.  Have you lost your infant or know of someone who has?  Please feel free to share your story here.

I'll admit that the grief over my daughter hit me harder than I thought it would even though I knew she was going to die.  (whether it be while I was pregnant with her, or after two minutes, two days, two weeks, two months or two years)  I am happy that I didn't deny myself that grief and, while it's still there, it has changed so much.  I'm a stronger and better person for having known and met my daughter.

Please light a candle today for all those babies lost and hearts broken.  No parent should outlive their child.

Thank  you to LJ Summers for permission to post this CF.

Fic Diving 10-15-13

Tuesday October 15, 2013 at 8:08 AM

Back to Fic Diving this week!

I have no idea of how many stories I read because I was too busy lounging on the beach in my yellow cowboy hat as pictured above.  But, I was able to come up with a few gems!

As always, please read, review and let them know you found them here on ADF!  Enjoy!

I Want My Life Back by samekraemer
Master Sergeant Edward Cullen achieved a very important goal…twenty years of active service to country. As one chapter ends, he's determined to achieve another important goal…to get back the people he left behind in its pursuit. AH/AH. EPOV. Canon couples, but not in the canon way. Rated M…language, adult situations, citrus.

I enjoy all of this gal's stories. I want to see how Edward fares in getting his wife back!

Lilim Division by SirVaden
When Captain Edward Masen reports to an undisclosed location for a new military assignment, his eyes are opened to the dark and fascinating truth of the world around him. Given command of the Gamma Team under the Lilim Division, he must learn to understand those under him while facing a threat he never imagined.

This one is only two chapters in. I love a good Sci Fi/Supernatural fic that takes our Twi-characters out of their normal canon roles. I'm looking forward to see how this develops.

Into the Woods by hismysticmuse
Bella Swan leaves Phoenix for Forks and when she gets there her whole world gets turned upside down. Who can Bella trust with her life, with her love, when things aren't what they seem? It is OOC, AU, ExB, M for lemons

We definitely have a few flashes of canon elements.  Bella and Charlie's lack of reaction to the supernatural creatures around them is kind of funny.  Listed as a drabble, but I really didn't feel like I was reading a drabble.  I feel like people will love or hate this one.

How to Forget by Shadow Masen

Where do you go if you don't know who you are, and what if you find you don't want to remember? Edward finds himself in Forks under suspicious circumstances, can Bella help him discover who he truly is? BxE AH

A good mystery happening here!  Who is Edward?  Good guy?  Bad guy?  Guy in the wrong place at the wrong time? Clues are dropping here and there!

Flashback Fic Dive:

Perfect timing on this one as it updated with an futuretake over the weekend.

Dear Maggie by Jenny0719
A heart leads Bella back home to Forks... and to the brother of the woman who donated it.
B&E AH

Thank you for your support for this campfire!  Your feedback is always appreciated!

Hopefully a ranger can help me out with a tag!  :)

Query Letters and Crying Fits

Monday October 14, 2013 at 5:44 PM

I'm a generally confident person. I accept the way I look, and love that my husband thinks I'm beautiful. I'm a little fluffier than I used to be, but that's okay!

I've written a book. WooHoo!!! Some have read parts of it and loved it, some haven't enjoyed it as much! That's okay! I can take it. (Seriously, if only one person ever reads my book and enjoys it, that would be enough for me!)

I am at a point in the process where I'm ready to write a query letter and start sending it out.

I'm going to post it inside. Tear it up, but only if you have a suggestion to help!

What are you struggling with today? Do you have something you've written and need help... feedback... a swift kick in the arthole? :-)

And, thanks. I really appreciate it.

The Walking Dead

Monday October 14, 2013 at 7:59 AM

So, it came back last night, and this happened:

This was me, basically:

So, what are your thoughts about last night's premier?

It seems like we're getting back into the reason why I love this show in the first place: zombies. It's about freaking time.

Come in and discuss. From newbies being the catalyst of raining men zombies, or Beth's inability of keeping a boyfriend (alive). That last part was a joke. Laugh.

:D

I miss my beautiful Vampire

Sunday October 13, 2013 at 1:12 PM

I'm afraid the Twilight fandom is rapidly winding down. I get just a couple new chapters per month, although I'm currently following 45 stories, and many fics seem abandoned. But what I miss most is Vampward.

Have I read all the good Vampward fics out there?

I've re-read some fics I don't know how many times, and I really hope Windchymes will update The Keepsake as soon as possible.

Today I've just discovered and devoured Five Times They Never Met (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/9641584/1/Five-Times-They-Never-Met) by The Fic Chick. A very pleasant read!

Please tell me there are new vamp fics out there -- well written, with a good romance, and possibly a fascinating redemption.

Thank you!

Outlander and JAMMF

Sunday October 13, 2013 at 10:52 AM

I've been a huge fan of Outlander / JAMMF for a few years now. While I admit that the author can sometimes induce fits of rage, and the books are a trifle too long, I've never encountered a literary character I love as much as James Alexander Malcolm Mackenzie Fraser. (Sorry, Edward).

That said, I've been less than elated by the news that the series was coming to Starz. As thrilled as I was about Twilight coming to the big screen, after I saw the actors in the roles and started paying attention to their offline lives, I was never again able to picture those beloved characters in my head as anyone other than the actors and actresses who'd been cast to portray them. And, eventually, my love for those characters started to change.

I don't want that to happen with JAMMF!!!!

Initially, I was less than thrilled to discover that THIS man:

had been chosen to portray THIS man:

He IS Scottish, so he gets props for that. But he seemed a little too ... metrosexual? pasty? soft? ... from how I'd pictured the Highlander/warrior of the books.

But then, he had to go and be all adorable on Twitter:

And I started to get hooked. Then, THIS came out and he had to go be all adorable at the very end:

and I may or may not have squealed a little (or, um, a lot).

So tell me, is anyone here excited about this series coming to life?  What do you think of the casting so far?  What are you most excited to see on the screen?  Do you worry that the television series will ruin the book experience for you?

Have any o f you read this? Have any of you read a book that everyone raves about and you wonder what the heck is wrong with my friends?

I am going to put my objections with this book in the comments- There will be spoilers.

Campfire Cookalong Time!

Sunday October 13, 2013 at 8:57 AM

As promised, SouthernCharm is back with another cookalong today and she'll be helping us whip up some divine stuffed cabbage and spaetzle. I've posted a link to the recipe inside, for those who can't cook at the same time SC does.

When charming Charm hops on here this afternoon she'll post step-by-step and have some handy pictures to go along with it. You can cookalong in real time and ask her any questions that come up along the way.

It's a fun way to interact, and you and your family have something incredibly delicious to look forward to!

We posted the ingredient and supply list earlier in the week. You can find it HERE. There's still time to run out to the grocery and get what you need to do this!

(Don't worry, you won't be using all this!!!)

Off topic: Air Berlin/Niki

Sunday October 13, 2013 at 8:21 AM

Hi again :) I'd posted this in the Help campfire, but maybe here I'll hear more experiences. I'm debating whether or not to buy FOR THE SUMMER (how optimistic) tickets to London with Air Berlin. The catch is that I'll have only an hour and a half to catch the connecting flight in Vienna, and I'm worried about what will happen if there's a big delay or a cancelation. The Vienna-London flight will be with British Airways, and there aren't any other partner airlines (they're in OneWorld) that fly to London on the same day, so I'll have to spend one night in Vienna on my way there. That may sound good but it's not, considering we'll have to go to a hotel for one night and then wake up too early in the morning, send even fewer than the three full days at London that I had planned, they'll probably place us all four in a family room which means I can't sleep at all (don't ask) etc. We'll be spending one afternoon and night in Vienna one our way back anyway.

Woah. That's a lot of words. Sorry. I got carried away 'cause I haven't posted here in ages. Anyway: If you've flown with Air Berlin/Niki, please tell me more.

Charlie Hunnam bails on FSOG

Saturday October 12, 2013 at 8:34 PM

Sorry ladies ... Charlie Hunnam has just dropped out of the big screen adaption of "Fifty Shades of Grey" -- and it's all because of his role on "Sons of Anarchy."

According to reports ... the decision was made because Hunnam wasn't able to "adequately prepare" for the role due to his "immersive" TV schedule.

Makes sense, since filming was supposed to begin on the movie later this month -- but just days ago Hunnam was talking up how seriously he had been taking the role ... so it's pretty surprising.

Ian Somerhalder, your move.

http://www.tmz.com/2013/10/12/charlie-hunnam-bails-on-fifty-shades-of-grey/

So what do you think this means for the movie?

I think the SoA reason is just an excuse. The script is probably crap and he didn't want to be associated with it.

The typos of your life

Saturday October 12, 2013 at 3:15 PM

Yeah, so I just now fixed a spelling error in my story summary on ff.net.

The typo has been there SINCE I POSTED IN 2009.

How humiliating.  I wonder how many readers skipped over my story, thinking that  I couldn't even manage a typo-free summary.  I thought I had fixed it a while back, but that was probably a posting on a different site.  BOO.

What humiliating and memorable typos have you made in your life that still haunt you today?
