How Are you Furthering Your Writing Skills?

Tuesday January 12, 2010 at 10:19 AM

I've recently begun writing my first fic including our sweet Bella and cocky Edward (sorry, I know it's been done before, many, many times, but I'm a sucker for those set ups)...anyway, I do take my writing very seriously and have enjoyed writing since my middle school years, but I'm currently at a community college education status.

I just purchased a book from amazon called "How To Write a Damn Good Novel: A Step-By-Step Guide to Dramatic Storytelling" by James N. Frey.

Has anyone heard of this book?  It had really great reviews.  Also, will you please share any other books out there you feel might help improve writing skills?  Also, please feel free to share any courses you've taken and what you learned from it.

I've read a ton on here about what not to write about (and I love reading it!) but thought it may be helpful to hear some good pointers on how we can all improve our writing.  What grabbed you to keep reading a good fic?

For the love of Twilight of course!

Thank ya!

Fic Love

Tuesday January 12, 2010 at 9:38 AM

I want to know what crazy stuff you've done for a fic.

Me, I bought Chucks. Red Chucks.

I was fangirling The Teenage Angst Brigade by jandco like crazy. I'd already been meaning to buy some Chucks, and as soon as I read that Edward wore red ones, I hoped on zappos.com and bought them. Just like that.

Have you ever bought something just because it was in a fic? Do you own some item that reminds you of a fic every time you see it?

Now's your time to admit your obsession! Whatcha got?

So I'm pretty much an office nerd. And I love Dilbert. Cracks me up. Today Scott Adams rocked the house.

PIMP Monday, Baby

Monday January 11, 2010 at 7:31 PM

Since there was NO pimp post last week, I am expecting Campers to go ALL OUT this week.

Pimp Yourself

Pimp Your Friends

Pimp what YOU are reading NOW and LOVE

EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE SOMETHING TO CONTRIBUTE.

As always, if you agree with someone's pimp, let us know. WE WANT TO KNOW WHAT PEOPLE ARE EXCITED ABOUT. And if you start reading something because you hear about it here, let the author know by reviewing and telling them you heard about it here.

This week I read DEAR ISABELLA, RIVER DAM and WITH TEETH.  I am angst-filled and blown away with the writing in all three. It's been a good week, so dazzling me will be hard but I am sure you can do it!

Flouncing is so relieving

Monday January 11, 2010 at 7:22 PM

I read fanfic sometimes. I also flounce fanfic a lot.

But what makes you flounce a fic? What makes you go "lol, no thanks. I'm gunna go now."?

Mine would be:

1. Commanding Edward. Him commanding Bella to come (I wish I could come on demand), Edward saying that Bella is HIS. AND YOU KNOW THIS BECAUSE EDWARD SAYS THAT SHE'S HIS IN EVERY SEX SCENE.

2. When it turns into PWP. They have sex once then that seems to be all they do. I blame the reviewers who ask for "omgz liek moar sex pls." because the author starts getting addicted to the reviews and attention and just makes them have sex more and more. It's horrible. But the problem is, if a story doesn't have sex, it doesn't get reviewed or recc'd anywhere that could make it popular. Sex sells.

3. Swearing after every second word. I get it, Edward/Bella/whoever is a ~rebel. I don't care about swearing. I swear a lot, when it's needed. But I don't fucking swear fucking after fucking every fucking other fucking word. Fucking hell. I hope that doesn't get any ads up there.....

4. Edward is smart because he uses teh big worrds.

5. "How dare you flame my story! I'm going to call you out in my AN because I'm a Big Name Author and I am IMPORTUNT. Everyone will PM you saying how horrible you are because you actually have an opinion that's different to theirs." <-- when authors do that. Never ever do that, authors. Being a ~big name~ in the TWILIGHT fandom doesn't mean you can call people out so they can be ganged up on. It's pathetic and makes you look disgusting.

6. "OMGZ IF I DON'T GET 134 REVIEWS FOR THIS CHAPTER, I'M NOT GOING TO POST THE NEXT ONE." If I ever see that in an AN, I'm out. I'm not even going to review, because I'm a big fat meanie.

I have more, but this post is ranty enough. Post your's or this'll just be a giant waste.

Another hoax

Monday January 11, 2010 at 5:54 PM

This is just dead wrong.

In a career milestone achieved by only a select few (and Jaleel White), Twilight Saga star Taylor Lautner has become the victim of his very own Internet death hoax.

Take that, Robert Pattinson.

No, Lautner's not really dead. A rep for Summit Entertainment tells E! News, "I am almost 100-percent positive this is a hoax." (After double-checking with the home office in Hollywood, the rep confirmed this was indeed a hoax.)

Besides, unless our favorite werewolf doubles as a zombie, he'll be presenting in the flesh at Sunday's Golden Globe Awards, organizers announced today.

But it's kind of an Interweb honor...

It wasn't that long ago the onetime Sharkboy was fighting to keep his New Moon role, and now he's a chiseled cinema stud who will soon be starring with (fellow death hoax victim) Tom Cruise. And that can only mean one thing: Some knucklehead had to go and claim Lautner's gone to that great wolf pack in the sky.

At least they gave him a unique demise. Unlike many others, Lautner didn't "die" at the hands of an infamous New Zealand cliff. Some so-called reports accused the 17-year-old of a cocaine overdose.

It's not so bad. Joining such undead luminaries as Matt Damon, Tom Hanks, Miley Cyrus and even Twilight scribe Stephenie Meyer, Lautner can count himself in elite company.

That is, if he doesn't get too hung up on Jeff Goldblum, Sinbad and Urkel being there, too.

Tubs, Showers and Bathroom sex

Monday January 11, 2010 at 4:11 PM

Let's be honest about this, wet Edward, wet Rob, wet anything is a turn on, at least for me.

In fanfictions too, sex do happen a lot in bathrooms, in bathtubs, under the shower.

As far as I'm concerned, my bathroom is way to small to be entertaining any kind of sex... sad but true. I'll edit with a pic later.

So what about you? How is your bathroom? Share some pics! Do you like longs baths? Short showers?

You can list three or more things that can be found in your bathroom or anything at all from the smell of your body wash to the color of your tiles.

What do you think of bathroom sex? Hot or too dangerous? ^^

This was approved by wtvoc! *love*

True Life, "I'm a fanboy"

Monday January 11, 2010 at 12:14 PM

EDIT: Sorry!  Post fail. : )

Did anyone catch this True Life!? It was on during lunch today.

Twilight Connection: One of the girls featured was a WoW fan and she dressed up like her character, which reminded me of when Bella dressed up for Edward on Halloween in "Resident Geek," but that might have been a DnD thing? I don't remember exactly...I wish this fic would update, it was full of pop culture goodness.

Moving on...One of the other people featured was a Power Rangers fan and he made me think of a few Twilight things....

1.) Why can't fanboys dress up like Edward Cullen?  Where can I go so fanboys will be dressed up like Edward Cullen?

2.) If any 26 yr old boy ever showed up and tried to date my 17 yr old daughter I'd go Lord Zed on his ass so fast, it wouldn't be funny.  That was a nerd alert moment by the way.

3.) If they ever did a Twihard True Life, it'd be kinda sad because we'd all be sitting in our rooms reading FF and like once a year they could show us in a frenzy when a movie was going to debut.  Or it'd be shippers fighting on the webs over exactly what it means when two stars take a pic with a little girl in front of a grocery store.  Sad.

Also I feel terrible about this but I kinda laughed at the Power Rangers guy, although I did admire his commitment.  He knew his love of PR was keeping him from having a girlfriend but he never waivered and made sure everyone knew about it.

Which lead me to decide: That I shall no longer hide my Twilight love.

I mean I already have a boyfriend and two kids...it's really not going to keep me from achieving anything.  lol.

SOoooo...Who's with me??

Breaking Dawn: One movie or two

Monday January 11, 2010 at 11:20 AM

Several "articles" have speculated. We have all weighed in. Fans everywhere online are giving their two-cents. but the question remains:

WILL BREAKING DAWN BE ONE MOVIE, OR TWO?

The LA Times has a new article, making it one of the first to get actual quotes from members of the saga production team.

From Times journalist Gina McIntyre:

Wyck Godfrey, the producer of all the films in the "Twilight" saga, admits that the creative team still doesn't know how they'll handle the character in the "Breaking Dawn" movie, but said that the plan is absolutely for the production to go forward -- as either one or two installments -- with an eye toward beginning to shoot in Vancouver this fall. All three stars are signed for "Breaking Dawn," he said, meaning that Stewart and Pattinson will be dealing with the joys and woes of interspecies parenting and newly minted heartthrob Taylor Lautner will return as often-shirtless shape-shifter Jacob Black.

At the moment, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, who's penned all the "Twilight" movies, is working on the "Breaking Dawn" script(s). "It's a work in process," Godfrey said in an interview Friday. "The issue [of whether there will be one or two movies] is not going to be resolved until we get the full treatment and see whether it's organic. If it's not organic, I don't think it will be done, and if it is, it will be. It really has to do with how much level of detail from the books there is, with all of these new vampires that appear in 'Breaking Dawn,' the whole section about Jacob... It's a very long single movie if it does become a single movie."

Although there's been a great deal of online chatter about whether Chris Weitz, director of the second and most recent movie, "New Moon," would return to helm "Breaking Dawn," Godfrey downplayed that possibility, saying, "I think everyone would be happy and excited if he came back, but I don't think it's going to happen."

He and the other principals are formulating a list of potential directors, "but right now," Godfrey said, "we're just focused on the treatment and getting that right. At that point, we're going to see who's available and who's appropriate. It's such a complicated book because you have the emotions and the intensity of the love story -- so you need somebody who's just a wonderful director of actors -- and yet it's really complicated from an action and visual effects standpoint. They've got to have both tools in their kit."

A visual effects background might be particularly helpful when it comes to dealing with the character of Renesmee.

"I keep having visions of '[The Curious Case of] Benjamin Button' in my head," Godfrey said, referring to David Fincher's Oscar-nominated 2008 fantasy about a man who becomes physically younger as he ages. "It's certainly going to be visual effects in some capacity along with an actor. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being a full CG creation, but it also may be a human shot on a soundstage that then is used to shrink down. I don't know. We need a director. When we get a director, that director will need to come with a point of view of how they want to tackle it."

SO, TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THIS ROUND OF COMMENTARY. IF IT'S NOT CHRIS WEITZ, WHO DO YOU SEE AS DIRECTOR?

Time after Time?

Monday January 11, 2010 at 7:16 AM

Howdy campers!

First time firestarter, long time lurker....

So- I was just cleaning up the kitchen before going to work and being as the task is rather mindless- I was dwelling on some Twilight things....

Which got me wondering- if the Cullens, especially Carlisle, have lived for decades or centuries or whatever, why don't they EVER change their names? And if they have- other than Edward from Masen to Cullen- why is that never discussed. They should have more alias' than there are fan girls.

Another random thought- there are alot of amazing things that can be done with make-up and disguises- so why don't they ever use them instead of moving every few years and making the younger ones start high school all over again?

Also- what the heck do they do with the animal bodies? Doesn't anyone ever notice that there are massive amounts of drained carcusses laying around. For that matter, if they are trying to be on the DL why don't they just do some farming? Why don't they have on hand the animals they would like to eat in pens? They could grab a few of each species and mate them and if they WANTED/NEEDED the actual thrill of the hunt- couldn't they just release them and chase them? Wouldn't that provide for a sustainable food source that doesn't involve wreaking havoc on the environment and leaving carcasses around? For that matter, they could even start an exoctic meat packing business!! They would drain the animals then carve them up and sell them- since you have to get all the blood out before you do any meatpacking...

Hmmm- anyone want to write this scenario as a fanfic? Does this already exist? Would love to read about the adventures, mishaps and  hilliarity that ensues from Cullen and Sons Exotic Meats.

Alright- I clearly need more coffee and to go to work where I can spend the day pondering far less entertaining things.

M*A*S*H

Monday January 11, 2010 at 6:58 AM

So... I was over in the "collaboration" campfire, and I got to thinkin'.  (Scary, I know.)

Anyway-  we like to imagine certain authors collaborating on fics because of their writing styles and such.  But what about just taking some fic characters or story lines and mashing THEM up, instead?

For instance-  In that collaboration thread, I said that I would want a mash-up of Bella Swan:  Zombie Killer and Alton House.  I think it would be hilarious to read about zombies taking over 1815 "polite society."

Or maybe I'd like to mash Edward from High Anxiety up with Bella from Just One Of The Guys.  You know... cuz Edward has that whole "no touchy" legal bullshit going on for him.  And that Bella is all messed up in the head (for good reason) and doesn't necessarily want to be touched anyway.  So they could be happy for a couple of years while they both get ready for each other.

WHICH CHARACTERS OR STORIES WOULD YOU LIKE TO MASH-UP???
