Hey Campers!

Most of you are aware by now of the devastation in HAITI!

from CNN~

A magnitude 7.0 quake hit near the capital Port-au-Prince shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday.  The powerful Haitian earthquake has destroyed most of the capital city of Port-au-Prince, Haitian authorities said Wednesday.

Rescue crews were racing Wednesday morning to fully assess the damage in the teeming hillside city, where toppled buildings killed and injured an untold number of people and trapped others in the rubble.

The U.S. State Department has been told to expect "serious loss of life," spokesman P.J. Crowley said, though precise casualty estimates were not immediately available.

About 3 million people -- one-third of Haiti's population -- were affected by the quake, the Red Cross estimated.

The Yellow Handkerchief ~ clip & stills

Wednesday January 13, 2010 at 8:26 AM

From MTV.com:

Though the movie follows two love stories, this clip focuses on that between Martine (Kristen) and Gordy, played by Eddie Redmayne. In it, Gordy shows Martine his science project, though both she (and us) aren't quite sure how the book pertains to science. After some flirting, one thing leads to another, and we'll let you watch the clip (after the jump!) to see where things go from there.

From what we can gather in the scene, Kristen's Martine falls somewhere closer to her role of Tracy in "Into the Wild" than Bella in "The Twilight Saga" with a free-spirit attitude and penchant for love. Fortunately, as can be seen in both of the above stills, Kristen is wearing a headband through much of the film, which should cut down on her tendency to run her hands through her hair.

"The Yellow Handkerchief" was completed several years ago (it appeared at Sundance in 2008) and is only getting studio release now, and seems to be standard Kristen Stewart indie fare. There is nothing wrong with that, as her films tend to be pretty good, but I'm also interested in seeing her performance in "Welcome to the Rileys" to see her really stretch herself acting.

evidently I have nothing to do all morning except troll the interwebs for Twi-related news... *shrugz*

SMeyer Squashes Breaking Dawn Movie Rumors

Wednesday January 13, 2010 at 8:15 AM

From SMeyer website:

Just a quick note on the subject of the Breaking Dawn film: there is no drama over whether the book should be one movie or two. My personal feeling is that it would be very difficult to cram the whole story into one movie (as I've said in many interviews previous to this), but if a great way of doing that surfaces, I'm all for it. Two or one, whichever way fits the story best is fine by me, and everyone I've spoken with at Summit seems to feel the same way. We're all excited to move forward on this, and we are slowly and surely getting there. I know people are anxious for news, and so sometimes gossip gets fabricated to stir things up, but there's no basis to this particular story.

This was in response to the alleged disagreement between Smeyer & Summit reported by [insert sarcasm] VERY reliable news source TC on The Awful Truth....whatev.

Uma & Rob

Wednesday January 13, 2010 at 8:03 AM

From CNN.com:

Uma Thurman is set to help Robert Pattinson cut his teeth as a bad-boy journalist in "Bel Ami," which begins filming next month.

"They are planning on doing the film 'Bel Ami' in London," Thurman's rep told PEOPLE, confirming the actress' involvement. Of a reported scripted kiss between the stars, the rep said, "The plot of the movie is not being released just yet."

Pattinson -- cast in May in the story based on the 19th-century novel by Guy De Maupassant -- will also be joined onscreen by Christina Ricci, reportedly as a promiscuous young housewife, and Kristin Scott Thomas.

The actor, 23, who plays a Parisian soldier-turned-journalist, has said that the lead female role in the movie "needs to be literally inspirational."

One can only guess that Thurman, 39, fills the bill -- and then some.

~~~~~~
Yeah.. so Uma.  She's cool I guess.  I wasn't available, so I suppose she'll do *shrug*
The Orange Rising Star Award
Tuesday January 12, 2010 at 11:38 PM
 "The Orange Rising Star Award recognises five international actors and actresses who have demonstrated exceptional talent and have begun to capture the imagination of the public as a star in the making." -BAFTA awards site
Kristen Stewart is nominated to the Orange Rising Stard Award. I don´t think she should win for her role as Bella, but it sure has given her recognition and maybe the chance for bigger and better things.
Fan Fiction defined
Tuesday January 12, 2010 at 7:09 PM
It seems Merriam-Webster just added the phrase "fan fiction" to the dictionary!  Took them long enough.
Here's their definition:
Main Entry: fan fiction
Function: noun
Date: 1944
: stories involving popular fictional characters that are written by fans and often posted on the Internet —called also fan fic.
I read about this at the Organization for Transformative Works, here:
transformativeworks.org/fan-fiction-added-merriam-webster
That being said, are any of you involved with Archive of Our Own?
The archive is a project built to host work from multiple fandoms.  Their site says it's to be a safe place to host fan fic and other transformative works.  I stumbled upon it because I'm a Buffy fan too, and they are well represented in the archive.  I just check out Twilight and there are only 50 works listed so far.  There is a waiting list for space though, as they are building the site as we speak.  Anyone know the lowdown on this?  On the waiting list, or a member perhaps?
The archive is here:
archiveofourown.org/
But I'm putting some of their FAQ's under the cut...in the comments section..
The Lovely Reader
Tuesday January 12, 2010 at 6:09 PM
After having two very disasterously sucktastic days, I opened my email to find a PM from a reader who wanted to drop my story from her fav's. I am VERY slow to update (a pet peeve of many of you...yes, I know) so she didn't want my story taking up space when it wasn't really active at the moment.
So what makes this reader so lovely? She was so very nice about lowering the boom on me. She didn't make demands or question my commitment to my readers. She was classy, not trashy. And while it unfortunately won't make me write any faster (I got MUCH bigger priority's right now) it felt REALLY good to know that there are still decent, fair minded people in the fandom.
Now share a fandom/FF moment or encounter that has taken you to your happy place.
And here's a little yummy to add to the party. Come on get happy!
Book Towns
Tuesday January 12, 2010 at 5:34 PM
Rangers, feel free to delete this if it's not on-topic enough.
The people in Forks have gone from living in a virtually-unknown logging town to a tourist phenomenon. There's even been a film made about them since Twilight came out.
So, have any of the towns/cities (big or small) that you guys live in been the focal point of any books?
Recently, I learned that The Great Gatsby was written about my town-- go figure!
Rob at The Lovely Bones Premiere?
Tuesday January 12, 2010 at 2:22 PM
The Lovely Bones actress Saoirse Ronan (omfg, I LOVE that name) mentions Twilight and Robert Pattinson at the premiere for her new film, The Lovely Bones. Apparently, he snuck in to see the movie!
When reading a novel, most of us develop our own images of its characters based upon our interpretation the text. It must have been a bit surreal for you, having already played Susie, to picture yourself within the context of the book.
SR: Yeah, it’s weird. I really sympathize with the likes of Kristen Stewart, who’s playing Bella in Twilight. I think teenagers can make their points more well known than adults, and they feel quite strongly about things — [especially] with a book like Twilight, which I read and loved and that everyone just was sort of obsessed with. And if anyone has their own image of what Bella should be like and then they see Kristen, everything is blamed on her, you know? Luckily, that hasn’t happened for me, but because I’ve done about four movies now that have been based on books, I can see how people would be like that — and even how I would be like that. But I wouldn’t blame the actor or anything. I felt a little bit of pressure, not only because [The Lovely Bones] was a book but because the whole movie was, in a way, on my shoulders. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.
When I interviewed Kristen for New Moon, I was struck by how protective she was about her character.
SR: Yeah, it doesn’t seem to her like she’s making a movie that has about three sequels and is based on a book and all the teenagers are going to see it. It seems to her that this is a very serious role that’s important to her, and I respect her for that. I felt the same way when I did Atonement and people would come up to me and say, “God, that was an awful child that you played. She was such a bitch.”
People really said that to you?!?
SR: Yeah! People said that to me ... so I can see why Kristen would feel defensive about her character.
Speaking of Twilight, I heard that Robert Pattinson snuck into the Lovely Bones premiere.
SR: Yeah, I heard that when I was at the after-party. I didn’t see him, though.
You figure he’d at least have the courtesy to say hello.
SR: [Laughs] Actually, someone said that to me: “God, you think he’d come up and tell you how awesome you were.” And I was like, eh, it doesn’t make a difference. It’s okay. I can see why he would just want to sneak in. I mean obviously, if he snuck in and didn’t do the whole red carpet, then he just wanted to see the movie, which is great. He didn’t want to do the whole, “Oh look, Robert Pattinson’s here!” He seems like a really nice guy, though.
I guess it was considerate of him to not want to steal the spotlight.
SR: Exactly, yeah. Because he would have. [Laughs]
