KStew - Your Opinion

Monday February 22, 2010 at 4:16 PM

This is my first post and I'm a little nervous, but I'm gonna go for it...

What do you think of Kristen Stewart?

There seems to be such a mixed opinion of her, and I wanted to know what people in the forest thought.

Do you like her? love her? hate her?    Why?

Personally, I don't mind her. Sure, she's not the best actress out there and she does seem quite awkward, but she is only 19. I don't think she was the right choice for Bella, but it could have been worse...

Anyway... what's your opinion?

I think I missed something

Monday February 22, 2010 at 3:06 PM

So I'll admit that though I've been writing on FF for awhile now, I'm still not used to people favoriting/reviewing/just damn reading it in general. BUT...I have a been thouroughly perplexed today and figure, maybe someone can tell me I'm not losing my mind.

Does anyone every have days where no one has seemingly read your newest chapter until all of a sudden, more than a week after the last update, there is a huge influx of reading? I mean going from about 10 yesterday to almost 100 reads today (I'm very much a little-known writer, so that's an impressive amount for an average day for me...so no judging haha).

How does that happen? How can you go from nothing to lots of somethings in a few short hours? Do people rec you out and not tell you? Is it just a happy accident that I shouldn't question?

I'm confused...and lost...and did I mention confused??

What are you're thoughts oh wise writers out there?

Angsty fics for dummies

Monday February 22, 2010 at 2:20 PM

Hi everyone!

So, I'm kinda new around here... I've been lurking and stalking for a while and I finally got my shit together and decided to just dive in. Here we go.

I'm a wussperv. Yup. I hate angst. There, I said it. *cue shocked gasp* I can tolerate it if the fic is complete and I have proof in the reviews that there is a HEA (yeah, I stalk reviews too. I'm crazy like that), like in Retrograde or The SafeKeeper but I'm always a bit hesitant to start new angsty stories, even with the prospect of a happy ending. Here's the deal. When I read a fic, I get invested in it (maybe a little too much) and angst - and I mean good angst that makes you want to shout and curl up in a ball and weep - makes my poor little heart hurt. And, you see, I know I'm missing a lot of great fics because of this, and frankly, it annoys the hell out of me that I'm such a wimp, but well... It ain't gonna change anytime soon. I think.

So yeah, back to the point. Because yeah, this post does have a point. I just have a tendency to get a little chatty. Sorry.

Yeah. So. Clipped Wings and Inked Armors. It's now complete, I don't have any reasons left to put it off, and after reading TLYDF and the Fictionators' rec for this fic, I want to read it. I really do. But it's anstyyyyyyy. *whiny voice*

So, my question is: are there by any chance any angst intolerant people who read this fic and made it through mostly unscathed?

And generally speaking, would you read an angsty fic if it was rec'ed to you several times or just completely ignore it and stay in your fluffy happy world? Personally, the only time I read something that was considered "angsty" because of a rec was when Scotch, Gin and The New Girl was still a WIP (notice a pattern with my reading choices?) and while I haven't regretted it one bit, I'm still weary of angst. So what do you think? Is there something wrong with us ? Are we a lost cause? Will we ever be able to read a fic without dreading and fearing the godawful heartfail?

Am I all alone in this?

Still angry

Monday February 22, 2010 at 12:24 PM

I'm sure most of you know that last night in Mens Hockey it was Canada vs. US.

US won.

Even though it was only a preliminary game, and Canada still has a shot at the gold, they just have a longer way to go...

I'm still angry and bitter.

I'm sure if you follow me on twitter you'll have seen how upset I am.

On top of that I woke up with a pounding headache, and I cut my finger and only just noticed it.

So tell me campers,

HOW IS YOUR MONDAY SO FAR?

Help cheer me up

Let me get to knooooow you.

I was going to post a song about Monday's, but this song has been stuck in my head for days.

The recipe for a great fan fic

Monday February 22, 2010 at 10:38 AM

Hi peeps,

I love to read and write fan fics, and although i am aware of what i think makes a good fan fic i'm just wonderin' what elements you think are necessary for a good ff ;)

That Seven Letter Word...

Monday February 22, 2010 at 10:29 AM

Gather ‘round campers - I’ve got something to say, so read this before pushing further.  This campfire is going to test our limits to be civil to one another, and to state opinions without insults.  Truth be told, I'm kind of scared to post it, but I think it could breed an interesting conversation if we're all respectful.  So, please don’t make me lose my faith in humanity.  Thank you.

Events of the past day (hell, the past few months) have had this subject weighing heavily on my mind.  So today, I’d like to talk about shipping.  No, not the E/B, E/R, E/C, E/E, B/J, J/B, A/J, E/R, C/R, C/L, J/J, whatever kind of shipping.  I want to talk about the kind of shipping that seems to have taken over the Twilight fandom as of late:

Real living, breathing, people-you’ll-never-know human being shipping.  Specifically, the ship of which we usually dare not speak.  You know what it is - the word that seems to bring out the worst of fandom, even more so than the amalgamation that is the name of the demon spawn from hell.

That’s right, kids.  I want to talk about Robsten.

The are they/aren’t they speculation over the actors who play the beloved Edward and Bella has reached a fever pitch these days.  We’ve got a buttload of websites that cater specifically to the ‘Robstens’ - all the alleged ‘news’ that’s fit to paste on the internet regarding the goings-on in Rob and Kristen’s personal life.  There’s a website for the ‘Nonstens’ too.  There are LiveJournal communities.  We’ve even got gossip Twitterers fanning the flames with their ‘sources’ and ‘inside information’ and ‘officials’ and ‘just trust me-s’ and ‘I can’t tell you how I know, but it’s just true, okay-s’.

There are offshoot groups of fandom that bandy about the terms ‘trust’, ‘believe’, ‘haters’, and ‘non-believers’ as far as this coupling is concerned, as if the investment into their personal lives is worthy of some sort of religious devotion.

My question is this: Why do we care?

In a fandom that has endless opportunities for entertainment and interesting discussion (fanfic, fanfic wank, the embarrassment that is Breaking Dawn, the embarrassment that is the desire for Breaking Dawn: The Movies - Comin’ Atcha in 3D, any number of Twi things you find on Etsy), why are people so fixated on the existence or non-existence of this romantic relationship?

Is it because they project the characters Rob and Kristen play onto their personalities, and want to see the personification of a real-life Edward and Bella epic story o’ love?

In this day and age, the internet has given us access to information at the touch of a button.  Last night, my Twitter feed was clogged with re-Tweets that ‘ZOMG ROBSTEN LEFT A PARTY TOGETHER!!!’, leaving room for personal interpretations of what that might mean.  ‘They’re obviously going back to their hotel room!’, ‘They were so excited to get out of there and have hot monkey sex they couldn’t even wait to eat!’, and my personal favorite, ‘I bet he’s giving her is own rising star award as we speak!’, are just a few examples.  Yikes.

For two people caught up in something that got so much bigger than they ever imagined and obviously want to keep whatever it is between them between them, why does anyone who is a fan of either Rob or Kristen insist on conjecturing?

These days, you can’t even go on a Rob or Kristen fansite without comments breaking down into a shipper vs. non-shipper war.  Kristen looks like she’s gained some weight?  There must be a love baby!  Rob looks unhappy?  OMG, maybe there’s trouble in paradise!  Their maybe-romance is cooling off?  THE WORLD IS OVER.  This isn't even mentioning some of the nasty things that I've seen people say about Rob's upcoming co-stars, because I assume they have trouble seeing him with someone other than Kristen (or seeing Edward without Bella, I'm not sure).  Some people just hate on Kristen because she dares to be near him.

Two weeks ago, one of my most beloved friends got married - we’ll call her Mary* (*names changed to protect those who want nothing to do with Twilight).  Now, my best friend Joanne* has been close with Mary’s brother Dennis* for the past few months.  They go to movies, they do things together.  Joanne and Dennis danced together and Mary’s wedding, and, get this: Dennis gave Joanne a ride home from the wedding!  I don’t know what Dennis and Joanne did after they left, but whatever it is, must be true love, right?

Now, I love Dennis and Joanne, and I have a vested interest in each of them, because they’re my actual friends (as in, I know them in real life and interact with them on the daily!  Imagine that!) and I want them to be happy (and I’m kind of hoping that if they get together, that’ll free up one of their NFL season tickets for me, but I digress).  But wouldn’t it be kind of odd for me to start up a DENNIS-N-JOANNE 4EVA blog so that all my friends could get together and gush over how awesome they are together and analyze how that pic of the two of them at the reception make it look like he’s reaching out to touch her hand?

Some people seem to scramble over themselves to gossip over the epic love story of epicness that may or may not be Robsten.  What happened to just being young and having a good time?  I’ve said in the past that I think invasion of privacy is, unfortunately, part and parcel with being famous.  Having the eyes of the world on you must be hard enough without having everyone and their mother wondering what you do in your bedroom.

This post may seem biased, because...I guess it is.  I understand the interest, but I don’t understand the shipping.  Someone please, please help me understand.

BAFTA awards - WTF?

Monday February 22, 2010 at 10:07 AM

I feel that Robs and Kristen's stylists need to be fired.

No, the dress....NO. It's a pretty dress,m but not for Kristen, and who the hell decided it fit her? Because it doesn't.

And Rob....lovely suit, but what about the hair? I feel he looks so much better with it styled off his face...the slappy look just detracts from that jawline/those cheekbones/eyes/

Kristen is such a pretty girl, with a great figure, why doesn't someone get a hold of her and take advantage of it?

On a more positive note - I know a lot of people think she's sullen/moody etc but I love her attitude, I feel she's down to earth and humble and I'm happy she won the award, to me she can act and I think she's goign to be one of hollywood's greats given a few years and experience.

What do you t hink?

Also, I completely forgot the BAFTAs were on last night and I mised them. I'm looking for the clip of Rob presenting but can't find one. Does anyone have a link? TY

Shippers rejoice

Monday February 22, 2010 at 9:14 AM

I am going to just watch from the sidelines and laugh.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart left the BAFTAs afterparty together last night after they'd celebrated her Orange rising star award win for a while. The pair made their way through the photographers and fans to the afterparty separately, but they left together in the back of a car as you can see! Perhaps the gorgeous are they or aren't they couple will follow in the footsteps of Jamie Campbell Bower and Bonnie Wright soon and let us all know if anything's really going on? Still, what a fantastic night for the pair of them!

Happy Monday, Campers!

Monday February 22, 2010 at 6:30 AM

Ah, Mondays. The start of a new work week. The start of another school week. Sometimes, Monday sets the bar for how our entire week will go.

WHAT DOES YOUR MONDAY AND YOUR WEEK HAVE IN STORE FOR YOU???

Today, it is raining here in Clarksville, TN, which is automatically bad because I want to stay in bed and I can't.

First up for me is a "Pre-deployment Briefing" at Ft. Campbell, just another reminder that I have THIRTEEN days until Mr. Pixie leaves for Afghanistan for a year.

His grandparents will also be here this afternoon, to see him one last time, adding to the seemingly endless list of visitors we have had in the past 2 weeks.

The laundry is piled a mile high and the dishes need washing. Thrills a minute.

My parents MIGHT be coming into town this coming weekend. Because my birthday is sometime soon. And I'm less than excited.

PUT YOUR GAME FACE ON AND TELL ME ABOUT YOUR WEEKLY PLANS.

Little connections

Sunday February 21, 2010 at 9:13 PM

Hello friends.

On occassion, a fic hits me with something really close to my heart. No, I'm not talking about a sweet Edwardism, or a really poignant moment between characters. I'm talking about doc martens. Yes, whenver I read that Edward is wearing these boots. . .well, let's just say that I'm a bit like Bella from The Caged Bird by Kristen Nicole. I'll let her describe it. . .

". . .I noticed with an audible gulp that he happened to be sporting a very worn-looking pair of Doc Martens.

Oh, no.

I closed my eyes tightly to try to wipe the unbearably sexy image of those long, lean legs encased in vintage black boots from my lust-soaked brain".

I'm fickle that way, sometimes that's all it takes for me to open up to a character. I like when I have something in common with them, it makes the story that much more interesting to me. Of course this is not a perfect system. I've been let down by many a-converse-wearing Edward. This also occurs with the characters music choices. For instance, Edward and Bella from Oh, Inverted World. They both like Tool, as do I. If you've read it, you know exactly how much Edward likes that band. I also have an insane fetish for Edward in glasses. The typical black plastic kind. Sigh. . .you get the point.

So, do any of you know what I'm talking about? Have you made a little connection with a particular character or story? I'm talking about clothing preferences, music, beards, suspenders?(jandco) Anything goes. On the flip side, have you found a particular musical interest, or something similar to be a bummer for a character? Me? I have a hard time understanding an Edward that loves pop club music.

Another example. I like it when Edward wears plain v neck t-shirts.

Ragers Anonymous

Sunday February 21, 2010 at 4:38 PM

I'm at a loss here.  I read an update for a pretty popular story earlier today and I've never before felt this kind of irritation with an author or a story.  I literally had to turn my computer off and go out so I wouldn't write a nasty-gram as a review.

Perhaps this is a sign I care way too much about fanfiction, or perhaps I should take this as an opportunity to start a forum where people can discuss and bash stories completely anonymously.........cause I'd really like to sound-off and I feel like I can't.

Would you like to be able to go to a place like that and vent?  It'd be a like a confessional or something.  Or is that just too mean?  At least it would be confined to one place that could be easily avoided for the more sensitive souls among us.  Maybe we could have a confessional booth here where our user names are masked somehow?   Or maybe I just need to stop being a cow?

ETA: the general consensus is that a confessional or a bathroom stall type venue would be a very bad idea.  BUT, this has been a very interesting discussion that I wouldn't mind continuing.  :)

The Hat Does Nothing

The Lovely Bones

Sunday February 21, 2010 at 12:29 PM

I Just Finished Reading The Lovely Bones By Alice Sebold.
I Had To Read It For My English Course As An ISP Book.
(ISP = Independant Student Project)
It Started Off Good And I Was Enjoying It,
But Than Around Chapter 11 It Started To Lose It's Plot.
The Overall Quality Of The Book Decreased.
It Was Basically 200 Pages Of Filler Than A Big The End.
It Had A Great Plot It Kept Me Turning Pages Up Until Chatper 11.
Than It Was Like 'Okay, What Does This Have To Do With Anything?'
None Of The Conflicts Were Really Solved.
And The Ones That Were, Were Unsatisfactory.
And Than There Was This Happily Ever After Epilogue Type Chapter
That Said How Everything Worked Out When Really It Didnt.
My Overall Rating Is A C+.
She Could Have Done Better With The Plot
And It's A Compromise Book, If You Can't Find Anything Else To Read.

I Want To Know What You Thought Of The Book?
Do You Disagree With My Review? Or Agree?
Do You Plan On Reading It?

EDIT:
I Just Watched The Movie & It Was WAY Better.
A Much More Satisfying Ending.
