Just Keep Swimming: The Diary of a Dori Fyshe

Day Twenty-Six — Delivery From: Life; Subject: Random

Today was pretty boring by most standards.
I ran some errands. I came home and read. Nothing to write home about.
But there are things you see on the boring days, days that aren't
already filled with excitement and anticipation, that you wouldn't
with plans and schedules clouding your vision.
Today was as mundane and extraordinary as ever.

Stormy weather.....

Sunday August 26, 2012 at 5:29 PM

Hey campers! Hope this is okay to post, since it's still 630pm my time. If not, feel free to delete rangers!

So this is what my next few days are looking like here in South Mississippi:

There's still lots of uncertainty about where direct landfall will happen-new orleans, gulfport ms, or mobile alabama. Either way, we'll likely see tropical storm force winds/flooding etc where I live, which is about 60 miles inland from the coast of MS. Katrina was a cat 5, so this storm shouldn't do as much damage as long as it doesn't strengthen much more. I work at a hospital and will be there when it hits. I've got my bread, my snacks, my extra clothes etc. Some people are having hurricane parties already-some are worried, some aren't.

My question for you guys-have you ever lived through a hurricane/earthquake/tsunami/tornado/any other kind of natural disaster? Are the kind to panic, or stay totally calm and do what needs to be done? Do you prepare in advance (always have supplies on standby) or fight the crowds like I do? Not trying to make light of bad weather/etc, just curious!

Also, to anyone in the path of this storm, please be cautious and stay safe. Just because it's not Katrina's size, doesn't mean it can't do damage!

FYI,I'm bring my kindle full of fanfic to help me through the boring off hours I'm required to stay at hospital. Edward will be with me during the storm :0)

While we're at it...

Sunday August 26, 2012 at 1:45 PM

So I was trawling @ ONTD, and there someone posted a comment saying the whole cheating scandal not only made her dislike Kristen, but also Rob, because it threw light upon the fact that he had loved a person who others inferred as bratty, b!+chy, selfish and generally rude. That he must be as bad as her then, because he must condone her behaviour.

While these aren’t essentially my views on Kristen, it certainly made me think of the numerous situations that I’ve observed where nice, polite, affable guys often choose rude, bratty women as their other half. Same goes for nice, likable women going for the d-bag type of guys.

My general logical mind cannot compute that, though I do understand the attraction towards a more layered, slightly Byronic type of personality which may look dark on the face of it but really isn’t. (That’s the main reason I believe women fell for Edward. Dangerous, dark, but not bad, as Bella herself surmised.)
BUT, that’s fantasy, and in RL, usually, what we see is what we get. A guy who’s mysterious, possessive and dangerous looking is often just be that, and that’s not healthy in a relationship.
That’s why while I swoon for slightly darker Edwards in fics, I don’t go and pursue guys like that in RL. I’m inclined to like the genial, nice guys like Edward in, um, First of the Month? Coincidental Major? Proud?... etc.(You get the point, lol)

So… where was I? Yes, would you really blame a guy/gal who fell for a loathsome person? Would you paint them in the same colour as their SO, for settling for such a people as their other half?
ALSO, I have a personal situation that’s on the same line, so I want to know your views. It’s inside in comments.

audio fan fic

Sunday August 26, 2012 at 10:45 AM

Hi everyone,

lately I talked with a few fandom peeps who are blind, or partially blind, and are using special screenreaders to browse the internet, use twitter and such. I learned that it is really tough for them to get into a story they 'read' at ffnet or elsewhere, because those screenreaders' emotionless robot voices kill all the joy... sometimes it's even hard if not impossible to keep up with POV changes, or who's saying what in dialogues. Well, I thought it sucks.

And when it comes to fan fiction of the M rated kind, it's quite obvious why blind folks do NOT exactly want to ask a family member or friend to read it out loud to them, right? LOL.

So I started thinking about making fan fic accessible for blind people, those with certain reading disorders or just anyone who has trouble with print or simply enjoys audiobooks.

After finding a lovely narrator (I'm German.... you wouldn't want to listen to my accent, LOL), and two weeks of producing and learning about the specifics of a page that meets blind peoples' preferences, I yesterday launched chapter one of my fan fic Little Green and Easybella. It was originally a O/S, so even though it's just the first chapter, it's over an hour listening joy.

http://littlegreenandeasybella-audiobook.blogspot.de/

The first reactions were very encouraging, and I couldn't be happier. I would love for you to check it out, and if you know of any folks who would appreciate this form of 'fic reading', especially those who depend on blind comp technology, please spread the word.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!! XOXO Betti

P.S. That fic is still a WIP, 32 chapters in so far. The audio version will update every time, a new chap is produced. The url of the written version on ffnet is http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6412470

See! Your time and reviews are worth big bux, my friends!

If you're not raking in the dollars for your book and movie recs, why not?

Integrity? What's that? Never heard of it.

SERIOUSLY? This troubles me.

Have you ever seen a book with a pile of glowing recommendations and wondered how such a LOUSY book could get such AH-MAY-ZING reviews?

Reviews have become a hot commodity; there is even a quantity discount.

This is why.

Other than ADF, where do you go for recs?

How do you know who to trust for recommendations on what books to read?
