Vampire novels

Tuesday November 17, 2009 at 1:10 PM

So we all know about the TWILIGHT SAGA books here in the forest. What I want to know is:

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE VAMPIRE NOVELS OTHER THAN THE TWILIGHT SAGA?

I am not a big fan of Ann Rice but I may be persuaded by someone here to give them another try-should I?  Here are my favorites:

MUSIC RECs

Tuesday November 17, 2009 at 11:33 AM

This is off topic, so sorry...

But I just made a list of all of the projects that I need to finish for work.  I'm self-employed and work from home which is great and awful all at once.  I'm so easily distracted....THIS SITE being my #1 distraction!! (I love it!!) And with all of the New Moon stuff, I'm going nuts trying to keep up with it all!

So after reviewing my huge "to-do" list, I have about 14 days worth of work to do, if I WORK straight through with no distractions.... that's soooo not going to happen :( (my poor clients).

One thing I do to stay on task is I play really good music really loudly.  I can't read FF with loud music on, and I can't listen to interviews on youtube either, so I play music loud from the stereo across the room, since most times I'm too lazy to turn it down or off (see how I have to trick myself into working??  pathetic!!)

What I like to listen to....

100 Monkeys, I've found to be great background music.  They are just quirky, and cool, and unique, and I am surprisingly productive when I listen to them.

I'm also loving the NEW MOON soundtrack, I love Bobby Long, U2, Jack Johnson, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, and right now Nine Inch Nails are OWNING me....

So what do you like to listen to while you work??

Kristen Stewart

Tuesday November 17, 2009 at 10:18 AM

Is Kristen growing on anyone else? Last year during all of the media interviews and publicity stuff she drove me nuts... she always seemed indifferent and snotty. Now, though, she seems to have grown into herself. She still seems a bit awkward and nervous, but I actually find her to be funny and endearing now. Plus, I think she's looked really great at all of the parties and premieres this last week. Am I the only one who's changed their opinion?

Does anyone know Cappy's twitter?   She lost her Dad this past week and her internet connection for home.  If anybody has her twitter (I thought Devy_Artemis or Jenny might) it would be nice if we could send her some love!

Digital Spy's New Moon Review

Tuesday November 17, 2009 at 8:33 AM

The Twilight Saga: New Moon

Monday, November 16 2009, 7:00pm EST

By Stella Papamichael

The Twilight Saga: New Moon

Director: Chris Weitz
Screenwriters: Melissa Rosenberg
Starring: (press conference) Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Ashley Greene, Michael Sheen, Dakota Fanning
Running Time: 130 mins
Certificate: 12A

If the first instalment of The Twilight Saga was a celebration of teenage sulkiness, then this sequel positively drowns in it. As Bella, Kristen Stewart is pure 'heroin chic', though it isn't drugs that means she's looking so pale; it's being dumped by her bloodsucking vampire soul-mate Edward (Robert Pattinson doing his James Dean impression) because he worries for her soul. Sigh... But it, like, totally sucks because he leaves town, which means all the girls who come to watch this movie hoping for two-plus hours of drool-worthy close-ups might feel, like, totally frustrated.

Taylor Lautner hogs most of the screen-time as rosy-cheeked Native American kid, Jacob. His feelings for Bella run deeper as their friendship becomes closer and even she starts to look at him in a different light; most notably when he whips off his shirt to reveal washboard abs. In the moonlight, he's even more imposing and much, much hairier. He's a werewolf but - yes, you guessed it - he's a bit reluctant about the whole bloodthirsty killing part. Bizarrely though, it's only when Jacob turns into a giant CG Lycanthrope that he becomes interesting. Unfortunately, Lautner has all the charisma of aforementioned washboard. No wonder Bella can't get over Edward.

Their separation is made more sweetly painful by spooky visions of you-know-who that coincide with moments of great danger. Hence, Bella becomes a biker babe. Of course in the mountainous backwoods where she lives, she can only go so far off the rails. This entire adrenalin-fuelled exercise is lamely unconvincing, like The Fast & The Furious meets Sweet Valley High. However, for the film's producers, it means Pattinson fans can get an ethereal flash of him at carefully measured intervals. (Swoon...) Still, it's left to Jacob to bare fangs when bitchy vamp Victoria (Rachelle Lefevre) shows up baying for Bella's blood. It's a score she needs to settle with Edward after he did away with the un-dead love of her non-life in part one.

While all this is going on, we're to assume that Edward is busy writhing in angst over his decision to leave Bella behind. Pattinson does at least get to do a bit of pouting on-camera when he finally remerges in the last act. Michael Sheen also pops up, quite Christopher Lee-like, as the camp vampire overlord who muses on the fate of the star-crossed lovers. But this denouement feels crudely tacked on. As before, the chemistry between Pattinson and Stewart helps to cover some of the cracks, but with the little amount of time they're onscreen together, it's like trying to patch up a flesh wound with Elastoplast. It also underlines the lack of a genuine rapport between Stewart and Lautner which bleeds the middle section of the film dry.

Stewart deserves credit for carrying the film on her shoulders and, once again, bringing plenty of soul to a character who might otherwise come across as self-indulgent. Lovelorn teenage girls will relate to scenes of her alone in her bedroom, glumly watching the seasons change to a soft-rock soundtrack. Director Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass) offers a few other evocative moments, like an underwater encounter between Bella and Edward which looks like it could've been inspired by an old Calvin Klein perfume ad. But the effect of that dreary dreamscape is always rudely broken by crass sexual overtones; Lautner and his pack mates run around the woods bare-chested in cut-off jeans, howling, like refugees from a '90s boy band. Perhaps the noise is meant to distract us from what's really going on. Which is nothing much really. 130 minutes of it too... A draining experience, but not in a good way.

I'd like to direct your attention to...

In which we discussed what events might occur at last night's New Moon premiere.

If you look down, oh 3 comments? You'll see I made this prediction:

"I predict Robsten will make out on the red carpet causing the entire fandom to jump up and down at the same time, causing a massive earthquake which leads to California cracking off the main land US and falling tragically into the sea.

It'll be really really sad."

In case you didn't know...

4.6 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks SoCal

The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude 4.6 earthquake rocked Southern California this afternoon. It happened around 1:20 pm Pacific Standard Time near Trona, California in the Mojave Desert. That's about 115 miles east of Los Angeles. News 11 received calls from viewers in Wellton who reported feeling the temblor. There was another small quake this morning about 30 miles from Palm Springs. No damages or injuries have been reported.

Coincidence?? I think not!!

PSA:  This post is entirely a joke and in no way meant to offend anyone. I'm just pointing out that I might be a vampire with the ability to tell the future.  If only a pixie cut didn't highlight my chubby face....I am wearing ballet flats today though and I might be seen dancing around my office....Maybe....Probably.

Have I asked this yet?

Tuesday November 17, 2009 at 8:13 AM

Seriously, I totally may have asked this already. I think I may be addicted to discussion posts.

Bear with me. Or bare with me.

Do you have random fanfic pet peeves? It's not a legitimate irk -like the overuse of drippy cores or doucheward- and it's not a squick, like pedophilia or incest.

For me, it's a bad dad Charlie. I hate it. It could even be argued as canon, but bah on that.

And I hate San Fransisco. If the story is set there, I'll flounce.

I don't know why. I have nothing against you if you live there- I SWEAR. I just think your city is stuck up. And I've never even been there, so who's the stuck up one?

Also, I love Law and Order. Quote: "Is there awny reason why someone would sodomize your husband with a bananna?"
