Day 9: August 9th always starts with an early morning voicemail from my parents (sorry it's a little shaky at the beginning, the kids were really curious about what I was doing.)  eta: if anyone knows how to record a voicemail in a video on the iphone, I would appreciate the tutorial!  I'm sure this could have been done without using another camera.

Bel Ami

Thursday August 9, 2012 at 11:41 AM

So I finally got to see this yesterday. It never played in theatres in my city, but it came out on DVD on Tuesday, and my amazon order arrived yesterday!

I thought it was quite well done and very close to the book. I also may be biased, but I thought Rob was brilliant in it. In every scene, you could tell he was just seething with resentment and hatred (for himself, for society) beneath that pretty exterior. I found him nothing like Edward or any of his previous characters and thought he captured the scoundrel Georges Duroy perfectly.

So imagine my surprise and disappointment when I headed over to Rotten Tomatoes after watching the movie to see that it scored only 28%. It left me wondering if the critics and I had watched the same movie. How could their opinions be so different from mine? I had the same reaction to the reviews after seeing Remember Me, which I thought was a truly beautiful film.

What do you guys think? Have you seen Bel Ami yet? Did you like it? What other movies have you loved that the critics panned?

ASK A RANGER

It can be about anything: ADF, the weather, advice, pop culture, parenting, school, serious biz, gossip, the cheating saga: breaking robsten, what I ate this morning, anything! Just ask and whichever rangers are around will be happy to answer. Feeding the trees would be awesome, though. js.

I have a question...

Thursday August 9, 2012 at 3:37 AM

I have a question..and in typing this on my phone so sorry for any mistakes.

I've ignored most of the 'incident' involving Robert and Kristen, I have no feelings about their relationship, however the coverage of the scandal and the way its portrayed in the media has got me thinking. Most articles are very anti-Kristen (which is fine, after all she did cheat) but what I haven't seen much of is anti-Rupert articles. To me he is the one with...'more blame' after all he was married with kids, Robert was only Kristens boyfriend (that's not to say that their feelings weren't just as strong, but there's no legal bond there, am I making sense?)

My question is why do you suppose we've vilified Kristen, but not Rupert?

I've talked to my boyfriend about it and he had SOME ideas, but I want to know what you think

Is it because Kristens a huge actress and we see a lot if her, while Ruperts a director and as such kinda behind the scenes in celeb-dom.

< Or, and I really hope its not this, is it okay for men to cheat, but not for women?

I want no drama from this lol, just an honest mature discussion please :)

ETA: This is about the media, btw, not about the fandom or this site. I know why we've talked about Kristen (either in a supportive or otherwise, way) lol. Just thought I'd add that :)

on the nature of forgiveness and KS

Thursday August 9, 2012 at 12:28 AM

so um, this is my first campfire. hopefully i'm not breaking any rules. if i am, please correct me. now on with the show...

it's always been my personal rule that everybody deserves forgiveness, everybody deserves the benefit of the doubt... ONCE. it's probably horribly naive of me, but i'd like to think that human nature is fundamentally good, and i'm willing to forgive and forget at least once. i don't expect anyone else to follow this rule, since it leaves you pretty damn vulnerable. however, i'm willing to accept the risks. after all, this is how i wish others to treat me. if it occurs a second time, then all bets are off.

obviously this cannot be reasonably applied to kristen. for one she hurt so many people, not just the parties involved, but to her supporters she effectively lied to. for another, she is simply too public a figure. forgiveness for her can only be EARNED, and we should all give her the opportunity to do so. as fans and non-fans alike, as fellow human beings, it is only fair to give another human being this opportunity.

to make this a little more interactive (but please remain civil, no suggestions that she should go off herself or something), would you allow kristen to earn your forgiveness, if she makes a genuine effort? if so, what does she have to do?

Wednesday August 8, 2012 at 10:56 PM

Soooo...this is my first ever campfire!  After more than a little bit of time uploading my pictures and editing with multiple sources and searching for over an hour to figure out how exactly to post the photos here at ADF I give you Day 8...

Please note that I know I'm not eligible to participate in the "contest" per se but the lovely wtvoc said I could join in late since it seemed so fun and I didn't know it was going on :)

So here's what I saw today...
