Change in schedule for the read-along!

People have been finding it hard to read along in time to discuss one fic per fortnight (that's two weeks for you Americans; I can't believe you don't have the word fortnight). Last week some people gave sensible suggestions to split fics up into two.

Therefore I'm rescheduling:

First half of Mr Horrible 11 October (chapters 1-17 inclusive)

Second half of Mr Horrible 25 October

So, what's happening in your sports world this weekend? My Buckeyes are in Indiana (best cantaloupe on the planet, but not much else happening out there...), my Browns are at the Chargers tomorrow and the Phillies suck so bad there's no point to watching any MLB.

Hi. Long time, no see.

Honestly, more than anything, this is just a post telling you all that I'm still alive. I just haven't been able to come here because retail hours SUCK and even though it's only been six months in my job, I feel like I'm forever living in my work uniform.

So, to give this campfire a point: What are the Fall TV shows that you're most looking forward to/have been enjoying? Also, for The Walking Dead fans out there, have you been watching Fear the Walking Dead? If so, what do you think of it? Are you one of those who needs instant gratification on a TV show to keep your interest, or can you appreciate the slow burn that FTWD has been employing? Did you go into the new show expecting a TWD 2.0, or nah?'

The Leftovers season two premiers this Sunday on HBO. Same night as the FWTD season one finale. I'll be watching both, tyvm. After I binge-watch season one of The Leftovers, of course. As much as I love the show, I've forgotten what all happened, so Lord help when season two starts.

Any Doctor Who fans? How are you liking Series 9 so far? I see a lot of people saying how much it "sucks" now, but honestly, I'm enjoying the heck out of it. I understand that fans still seem to not like Peter Capaldi's Doctor, but I love his more than I loved Matt Smith's, tbh. #sorrynotsorry But Eccleston is still #1 in my heart (because he's my first, and you never forget your first). ;)

There was this fic a while back that had a Bella who fell for a slightly older Edward in college. Her best friend's brother. Alice was the friend.  The author was popular but I didn't really care for her fics. This one; however, was great. It begins with a Bella who sees Edward for the first time since their relationship ended. They see each other at the airport and sit together on the plane. Ten years have passed. When the relationship ended, Bella had up and disappeared on both Edward and Alice. This Edward is a changed man and throughout the fic we see how they both have grown. I can't remember the name of the fic or author. Is this even still around? Oh...And Edward was in politics.

I am on my kindle. I don't think I can copy and paste the description. This author has taken nearly 5 years with this one, but it is so good. If you feel so inclined, give her some encouragement. She gets a lot of mean reviews about her slow updates. I cannot leave reviews as the violate AUP at my work.

Today's Bondfire, we're going to talk about

STEREOTYPES IN THE MEDIA.

What do I mean by that?

Well, several months ago I was listening to NPR and they were talking about an Argentine diplomat who tweeted an inappropriate statement about Chinese accents and 'Lice'.

You know, because Chinese people can't pronounce 'R' properly.

It's an old joke and it's not even funny, esp not coming from a diplomate from another country.

Also serves no purpose.

So, I've been meaning to have a bondfire about this topic.

How do you feel when someone from your (hometown/region/ethnicity/country) is in the media or news?

I cringe whenever I hear about any kind of school shooting, but when the Virginia Tech one occurred and the shooter was found, I cringed even more.  He was Korean-American, and though I am not Korean, I *am* Asian.  I felt bad not just for the victims and their families but for the shooter and his family too.  And whether 'my people' would be judged by his actions as well.

Or when I was little and watched Sixteen Candles, I cringed during every awful stereotypical scene with the Asian teen.  (I can't even get myself to type his ridiculous name!)  Growing up, we were one of the few Asian families at my small private school and everywhere I looked in the media seemed to perpetuate stereotypes.

Well, it's 2015.  And though we have a long way to go, there's awesome shows like Fresh Off the Boat, that are perpetuating stereotypes while simultaneously blowing them out of the water.  I love it.  I love seeing Asians on tv where their ethnicity doesn't really matter--it's not the sole focus of the show as the main character represents any kid going through that tough awkward pre-teen transition, he just happens to be Chinese, and the show happens to be set in the 90s.  With hip-hop/rap music.

Doesn't hurt that Constance Wu is awesome in this show too:
