They are breached or connected in some mysterious way by an old, odd leather bound journal that Alice finds in the back of a bookstore in Port Angeles and convinces Edward to buy. The story follows similar events happening in each Edward's life - each chapter is written in two POVs that center around this journal. Throughout this whole ordeal is an intense, passionate burgeoning love story with Bella, and oh man, does it get hot!!!

Bella wants to die, and almost gets her wish fulfilled when she gets hit by a shiny Volvo. She is left with serious injuries, and the only thing keeping her from dying is the person who hit her.
~I can still vividly remember scenes from this story even all these years later. Something absolutely unspeakable happened to Bella, but they told her to tell the hospital it was something else so they wouldn't get in trouble. They told her to tell them she tried to commit suicide, or else. She is devastated and petrified. She stumbles through the motions of living and is terribly withdrawn and unfeeling. She had been a quiet shy girl and didn't have any friends before. Now, the kids at school take the awkward, empty way she stumbles around and make fun of her. They are relentless and cruel in their teasing and call her unflattering bird nicknames like ‘Turkey' or ‘Goose'. Whatever chance anyone has to bump into her, make her drop her books, make derogatory remarks, or make fun of her, they do. And by the kids at school, this includes Edward. For some unknown reason, he despises her, thinks she's a waste of space for even existing, and tells her so. It's really sad.
When Bella's mom is released from the mental institution in Seattle and comes home right before Thanksgiving, Bella freaks out and leaves in her truck - just wanting to get away from her for some reason. When her truck breaks down on a dark stretch of road on the outside of town, she steps out to wave down an oncoming car. The silver Volvo swerves, hits a patch of black ice and careens right into Bella, slamming her into the windshield. Edward manages to call Carlisle through his state of shock, and Carlisle calls the ambulance. When Edward starts to go crazy after what he did, he sneaks up to Bella's hospital room in the middle of the night to apologize, and things slowly, gradually start to change between them. He also later learns some startling information. There's a much deeper darker reason Bella doesn't want to live anymore, but Edward vows to save her. Can he? This is such a gripping story!
